Assembling Langley white metal kits with solder¦ my first ever try [Horses for courses]

In need of some horse power for my pre-grouping videos, it's time to make up some white metal kits
This has been brought to my attention and I feel duty bound to bring it to yours.
I’m still seeking verification but I am confident in the data reviewed so far and feel a warning is warranted for my viewers.
Langley have confirmed that their kits don't contain Cadmium.
A warning regarding soldering and working with white metal and low melting point solder.
This is not a kill joy statement but a researched concern that I am duty bound to bring to my viewers.
70 degree low melting point solder, may well contains cadmium! (check before you buy)
This element is toxic! More to the point carcinogenic and an extreme permanent neuro toxin!
The solder must not be heated above 250C (when it contains Cadmium) and ideally the temperature of the solder should be kept down to 120C, this ensures the Cadmium is not released into the air.
White metal and LMP solder nowadays is regulated but it was not back in the day! So working with older materials may require precautions!
White metal kits are/were generally made up of varying quantities of antimony, lead, cadmium, tin, bismuth and zinc and so are less than environmentally friendly! You should always wash your hands after building kits with white metal, as the trace additives are all heavy metals including arsenic and other not-nice elements.
White metal dust should be regarded as hazardous!
A bit of research will show that the above warning is valid and well meant.
We can still enjoy our hobby but need to be informed and safe and take precautions.

A very nice workmanlike job. Anyone who solders in front of a camera deserves a medal. The finished models are absolutely charming. A magnificent achievement altogether.

Excellent, that must be a confidence booster! And probably trickier than most white metal locomotive kits. If I could offer one bit of advice, you are still being a bit mean with the flux. A touch more flux will really help the solder flow and flash in tight. Great job my friend 🙂

You made a great job of your kits, love the finish that you achieved. They look great. Admire your detailed methods for the construction and I'd agree with you on the Hansom cab, I made 3 attempts with mine, When cutting through rubber with a blade, try wetting the blade with water. I didn't even know to clean up the area before soldering, I'll give it a try next time. Very courageous, soldering on camera....

The only 'hite metal' kit I ever assembled, I had to use araldite, balance/wedge/prop the parts up, and wait for hours for it to cure! (nightmare on a ship at sea!) - - Quite why those cleaning devices are called 'ultra-sonic' I don't know, because they aren't. If you disregard the timer and display electronics, they are just an electric motor with an off-centre weight to shake the casing. If they really were ultra - you wouldn't hear anything, as the sound would be beyond the frequency range of the human ear.

Genuine Ultra-Sonic baths do still make a buzzing noise, I have used many in my line of work some small and some large ones. What you describe here is a cheap and nasty Chinese knockoff usually sold on well known market places as jewellery cleaners.

Thanks, it's a 1khz ultrasonic bath, what you hear is just the vibrations being transduced. I know the ones you mean however

Well done Mike - they look excellent. 👍 Can remember when Langley Miniature Models started in Langley Homes Stores (the rear was a model railway shop) in Langley Green, Crawley. As the model casting flourished, Tony sold Langley Home Stores and relocated his model casting to more suitable premises in nearby Three Bridges. The former Home Stores (and its model shop) closed a few years later - I believe the premises are now a clothing store.

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Langley Miniature Models (trading as Langley Models) shop is at 166 Three Bridges Road and quite close to Three Bridges station. Their website states 9-4 opening weekdays. It also confirms they started in 1968 which makes me feel old as I remember it started with (then shopkeepers) Tony & Pam bringing out their first locomotive kit - a LBSCR Baltic tank designed to fit on a Triang A3 chassis.... However, they quickly realised the future was not with locomotive kits but figures, road vehicles and other models.

A while back I ordered what I thought were some Carts, Hand carts and Traps, a nice selection all in one box(according to the picture), imagine my Joy on its delivery to find it was all tiny bits that needed assembling 😵‍💫 Needless to say they they are still in said box 😉🥴

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Mike: I sent an email. Cadmium is a thorough going heavy metal poison. Carrs warns us; if I can find my copy of their soldering handbook I shall quote it for you. Always ask the manufacturer if cadmium is present in their castings and their solder. If the kit is old and the manufacturer cannot be found, assume the worst. I believe it is been regulated out, but there are a lot of old kits around. In the email I sent I quoted that the one of my recent lowmelt solders had cadmium, and the other did not. I know because I ASKED! ASK folks! Is there a chemist in our audience who could professionally state this?

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Mike: like so much, computers j-u-s-t work, but j-u-s-t work brilliantly. Then there are times they don't work. I do want your reply; if I didn't think what you do is important I would have gone to a lot less trouble; and for all that, the issue matters. As I said, we know we often overstress safety on occasion because we don't know who is going to do e-x-a-c-t-l-y what we say. There are times, even as we write the very words, we think 'Am I being a 'net-nanny' here? ' Any time with CADMIUM is not one of these! If anyone is soldering ring leader in our interest area, it is Carrs. Find their handbook, now from Pheonix Precision. Like you, very time I do anything, or suggest anything, three main concerns cross my mind: 1/ injury - like folk who, between cuts, film waving around their eyes an upended and loaded Swann-Morton number six; 2/ toxicity; 3/ Fire. It is like the flying peoples' take-off check. Copy your reply to MS Word and save as a document, then attach as a file to a new message. Perhaps, before that try re-sending. Failing that I'll send you a SSAE. Then there is another way of doing this. As they say in Morris circles: 'Keep on Morrying!'
