Aster yellows is a plant disease that can infect many common vegetables, annual flowering plants, perennial flowering plants and weeds. Infected plants have yellow leaves and stems, stunted growth, and small malformed flowers. The insect aster leafhopper can carry the aster yellows pathogen. Learn more here:

For anyone wondering, I’ve read that the infection doesn’t survive in the soil, only in the living parts of the plants.

Thanks for the information. I didn’t know that but I’ve planted several more plants in the same area and none have gotten it. I’m glad too because those plants aren’t cheap. Thanks again for sharing the great news

@@LSatchthanks for your video! I just found some of this in my cone flower bed and was so sad to have to take out the entire affected plant, but after doing research and watching you remove yours, I’m feeling more confident! 🌸

Real nice beds. I started to notice evidence of this aster yellows past few seasons, as well as a greatly reduced number of coneflowers in general. Have to wonder if they can be crowded out by too many other plants mixed together. I say this because, based on what I've read, aster yellows doesn't actually kill the plant - but who knows. I have lots of rudbeckia all mixed in with the coneflowers, so wonder if they're crowding them out? The rudbeckia have gone pretty crazy in places where coneflower used to be. So, as much as I hate to, have to be vigilant and dig out anything that looks infected now. I'm surprised at how many videos there are about this disease. One of the best things about the internet - to be able to research and learn about things. Best of luck with your gardening! Haven't bought any new coneflowers for years but might need to do that since I really like them.

It’s really hard for me to dig them up too. I have not had any aster yellows since this video. I did pull out a bunch of rudbekia in my last garden update because it was overtaking the cone flowers. Thanks for sharing

@@LSatch Exactly what's happening here I believe. The rudbeckia is apparently aggressive enough to crowd other things out. I have pictures of the beds from several years ago and was surprised to see how many more coneflowers there were. Not sure how many I actually have to remove. Some just look like the leaves are normal but were possibly eaten by something? They look more chewed than deformed. Have to err on the side of caution though. As the buds are starting to mature (though some never do - not sure if that's attributable to yellows or not), they DO have a bit of a greenish appearance. Some never grow and develop leaves though or else the leaves are more like little spikes. I suppose that's also symptomatic of yellows? Or also maybe conditions too dry and hot? I'll put in my notes to simply buy more coneflowers next spring and start replacing. I may have also inadvertently ripped some out during early spring weeding. When first emerging, they look much like the rudbeckia. Happy 4th!

@@KSguitarmusic thanks for sharing. You’re not the only one that has pulled them up by mistake 😃. All the rudbekia you see in my videos started out years ago with three one gallon plants my neighbor gave me. (Maybe they didn’t like me 🤷🏻‍♂️). You too have a bang up 4th!

I had the same thing happen to mine. Finally pulled them up this year after struggling with it for 3 years

I know that was painful. Did it start on just one plant? I guess time will tell if I will lose more plants. Thanks for watching

I hate losing plants I hope this solves everything. I love pink coneflowers. Going to check my local Wal-Mart for bargains.

Watching you remove the daylily's, I kinda laughed to myself. Your luck looks like mine. How come when you go to do something, you have to do 5 other things? lol Good luck with the yellow asters disease. Have a good day. 👍

I know exactly what you mean. Hope this doesn’t happen to you but whenever I go to do something it usually takes me longer to find the tool that will do what I need than it does fixing the problem. Have a great Indiana weekend.
