Aston Martin's history in racing is long and full of ups and downs. The cars that the company from Gaydon has fielded have varied from F1 cars to Le Mans winners and many magnificent beasts in between.

The DBR1 of Le Mans 1959 is absolutely one of my favourite LM cars ever. Not only was successful, but damn, these lines accentuated by the semi-covered wheel arches, all painted in that beautiful kinda bluish racing green was a true dream. Not to mention the people that lead it to the success, with Carrol Shelby and John Wyer above them all.

Glad a passing mention was given to the DBR1-2. Although not particularly successful I still thinks it's among the most beautiful prototypes ever built especially in its Gulf colours.

In the comments there is no mention of Roy Salvadori who drove the majority of the 1959 Le Mans win (14 hours) was always faster than Shelby and also competed in and won many races for Aston Martin during the period.

3:48 The DBR1 had a special trans-axle gearbox, not the one from the DB3. This box was also fitted to some of the DP cars. It was troublesome. Basically any car fitted with it was guaranteed to fail - but they did eventually sort it out. Too late.
