Bit late; just bought my Grandmothers 1996 City 1.6lt (Holden version of the Astra). Has clocked 168,xxx Kms on it, always been garaged & maintained. Needs new hoses everywhere & some oil leaks fixed, but our eldest daughter will learn to drive manual in it!
I'm still using my 1.4 ls estate as my daily hack. It's on 182k and I've done almost 100k in it. Not bad for a £650 runabout! I'm going to try for 200k if I can keep the rust at bay but that might be a bit optimistic.
Love it! I once owned an r reg 1.6 16v astra arctic and the manual gearbox ratios worked great with that engine! Shame after 2 years rust got the better of her! My first and last vauxhall as all of the post 2000 models are not a patch on the 90s models
Handy mobile tool box. Being the 1.6 be good on fuel you would have thought. Good ya now have a bit of heat. Shame the box don't want to change. Dam about the heater matrix least you got one for it.🤙🏴👍
Great vids mate ...brings back such good memories of my vauxhalls from past days ..... think u stay close to me iam in Livingston.... anyways keep them coming
I had a mk3 astra auto and that gearbox light would always come on if I turned it on with the selector in Park. If I started it in neutral I never had a problem!
@@OnceDrivenForeverSmitten Whatever you decide I'll look forward to the build progress, love this shape Astra especially the GSI front end with that smooth grill.
Hi from Durham Dougie 👋 👍 got little astra estate pal just hope that matrix leak hasn't done to much damage in that footwell unless just started but am sure was leaking when first got car wasn't it?🤔 and be a good watch stripping and rebuilding engine and seeing how car out in end project 👌 thanks for your time be safe and see you soon 👍 👋
the heater core is the highest point in the cooling system of most cars. It is perfectly possible that it had an air pocket in the heater matrix while you did not have the engine overheating. the air could have gotten in through the leak of the heater matrix.
Had a similar problem with a cavalier The windows kept steaming up Was wiping the windows at every opportunity It was the heater matrix that was at fault
Had the same problem on my Calibra Dougie heater matrix leak ,constant steaming up of the windscreen and fishy anti freeze smell my mate changed it no problem apart from the hoses were a night mare almost like they’d glued themselves on with the heat
@@OnceDrivenForeverSmitten Definitely. My everyday car at the minute is a diesel Rover 45 with no cruise, a hole in the condenser and cloth seats. I'm not doing very well 😂
You don’t need to take the dashboard to do the heater maketrax no a mk3 Astra remove the little screws under black bottom tray I did one year a go it was very easy
@@OnceDrivenForeverSmitten not on a air con model buddy no but you can see the same screws on your video on the black bottom tray remove them all around the bottom try and slide the bottom try away but remember to remove the senterconsol out first tho buddy you should sill bee able to do it pal just have a go that all I did didn’t look at books or nothing I just had a go at it good look pal 👌🍻👊
