Probably the most thoughtful of the early astronauts; certainly the best writer….
@Noldi400

Mike Collins is definitely, IMHO, underappreciated. Deke Slayton chose him very carefully because he wanted to be sure he had someone who could bring the CSM home and do a successful re-entry all by himself if the landing went south. In his first book he said that his "secret terror for the past six months has been leaving them on the moon and returning to earth alone".

Helgi Rudd He does seem like a lovely bloke, but I think the MOST humble must have been Neil Armstrong. Apparently he's the reason that the astronauts names weren't put on the Apollo 11 badge, because he knew the achievement wasn't just theirs, but belonged to all the thousands back on Earth who'd made it possible.

Collins was also the pilot Deke trusted to "go down and get them" if the ascent went badly; if the LM could limp up into an orbit of some kind he would have to try to descend and make rendezvous with it.

Yes, I must admit I never knew much about him nor much about Apollo aside from AP-11 & AP-13. After seeing the mini -series "From the Earth to the Moon", I became interested enough to read as many books about the subject that I could afford. Both Mike Collins and Al Wordens books were standouts. I seem to recall that Collins was Dekes first choice for the Commander of AP-17.

why is the footprint on the moon different to the shoes used for a space walk? 🤔
@joevignolor4u949
@joevignolor4u949 5 лет назад
During a moonwalk the astronauts used special protective overshoes that had a different tread pattern on the bottom. The overshoes were taken off and left on the moon. During a walk in space they just had their spacesuits on, which have a different pattern on the bottom of the feet.

going 18000 mph...going 238000 miles...flying 24 hours per day....3 days?...13 hours should be enough time????????
@BertieSlack
@BertieSlack 9 лет назад
John Rogan You made the mistake of assuming they travel at constant velocity all the way there. They leave near-Earth orbit with an 6-minute burn of the 3rd stage engine to give them enough delta-v to get to the Moon. They don't need to fire the engine again. However, they are still under the influence of Earth's gravity and they slow down significantly until they reach the point where the Moon's gravity is stronger than Earth's gravity. Then they 'fall' the rest of the way to the Moon. See? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-lunar_injection
@666zerowolf
@666zerowolf 9 лет назад
Makes a good disney movie....3 days to the moon....earth's gravity slows an object going 25000 mph after the stage 3 firing.....10 hours to the moon max time...then powerful retro firing would be needed to stop the craft...the 3 day voyage was done to make people forget about the flight...a complete farce...they claim Apollo 17 did 191 earth orbits...5 million miles of space flight but never more than 300 miles from the Earth...a strange way to burn fuel and time. Krantz is a good indicator of the level of crazy at NASANAZI.
@BertieSlack
@BertieSlack 9 лет назад
John Rogan You really have no clue what you're talking about. "191 Earth orbits" Eh? The Apollo 17 command module did 75 LUNAR orbits. Don't you think the Soviets would have noticed if the mission just orbited the Earth for 12 days? What about all the independent radio hams who were listening in on the mission by pointing their receivers AT THE MOON. You don't burn fuel in orbit - the command/service module engine only needed to fire twice - lunar orbit insertion and trans-earth injection.
@666zerowolf
@666zerowolf 9 лет назад
you actually believe they landed on the moon? Watch the footage provided. the landing of 11 was in a swimming pool,,buzz was the one that convinced NASANAZI to train underwater from his scuba diving days. A molecule of water that is supposedly proving weightlessness actually shows to be an air molecule in a water environment....it floats up as to be expected in water not in the "vacuum of space"...Buzz does some Shriner hocus pocus but close observation shows an underwater production. The dust "kicked up" covers up no craters or even lands on the pods, as it is the result of strobe lights on the bottom of the tank, not dust from the "retro rockets"...an absurd concept in itself!
@666zerowolf
@666zerowolf 9 лет назад
BertieSlack No fuel is used in orbiting the moon 75 times? The moon is only spinning on its axis at 10 mph at the equator. 7.5 mph at the 45th parallel and is virtually stopped at its poles. The earth is supposedly going 67000 mph as it orbits the sun...although it spins at 1000 mph on its axis....a 24 hour day. The idea of a "free return trajectory" is as bogus as the "safety corridor" on the return to Earth. The astroliars just seem to be practiced bullshitters....believe me...I've been there... funny how all 12 have a different description of lunar soil...finally determined to be orange and smell like gunpowder....never have seen such a sample in national geographic or in a walt disney movie but I am sure that if the astroliars said it...it must be the Truth.....not!

+LOVE THE LORD THY GOD "Astronaut" Collins is a lier!! He never was over Van Allen belt - if he had he would be dead! In 1972 Russians realized that all American missions to the moon were performed as kamikadze missions. In fact American astronauts really landed on moon surface (there is evidence for that), but all of them died from radiation. NASA replaced them with living men as Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins. If Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins had passed Van Allen belt they would have died. NASA commited a MURDER in order to win the Cold war and the Space race. NASA prefer to support movies about UFO on the moon because it serves as good cover-up for the mass media. See The Shining - Stanley Kubrick - you will realize that The Gemini crew was sloughtered and Apollo crew was sacrificed. NASA made a blow job to political class in 1969. Russians blackmailed USA with this information. Thus NASA cancelled lunar program in 1973

10:25 that's a hot spot caused by a nearby spotlight. The Sun at 93,000,000 miles away casts an even light, without areas of high and low power. 11:26 why does the light illuminating the scene suddenly change to bright light? There are no clouds on the moon. The strong shadow removes the possibility of a sunrise happening. And notice how dark the astronot is in the shadow before the lights are turned up 11:13 .

@Esteb86
@Esteb86 9 месяцев назад
all of the lit spots get brighter. you only really notice it on the darker portions, Neil going down the ladder, and buzz's reflection in the window, because the other bright areas are already almost blown out. The aperture was opened to allow more light in the camera to hit the film. Film, and even digital cameras, don't work the way our eyes work. They don't have the dynamic range of human eyes. ok 654321...blastoff! Funny how less and less space knowledge is acquired with each passing day. Logically, wouldn't there be "2001" like buildings and flying machines on the moon by now??? NASANAZI conned our people...But no "Iron Sky" in sight! All propaganda that the Russians started. All the remnants exist from Apollo....u and Sir Richard Branson can put them together and get innocent people killed! Saturn V...if it were so powerful why not use it to put the Shuttle into space?...The LEM, Command Module, and Service Module, the Lunar Rover...doubt any component made it to the moon...filmed in Winslow, Arizona....plenty of moon rocks there too...petrified wood from an ancient forest that once grew on the Moon....piper cub...well named....Branson put rocket engines on a piper cub...saw how far his "space tourism" got! HAHAHAHA...

The problem is not the hoaxer trolls..but the very idea they exist....Hey Mr Rogan' Im', pretty sure I know the answer..but how many times would I have to flush to be rid of you..but really I truly don't know what makes you so stupid, but it sure works..ok troll, you've been fed..now go away...but I'm not getting my hopes up..let me guess..you're still here right??darn, I knew I shouldn't have got my hopes up...

Fly to the moon, a hole....you have all the components they used in 1969 sitting in museums. Bring back some petrified wood from the ancient moon forest.... Ticker tape parade for u when u return...Salvage all the space junk left on the moon....Pathetic fool!

The United States has not been the orbiter, there was no engine, no rocket but had a strong desire to overtake the Russians.But it was Kubrick was Frank Borman-organized the production of exact copies of Saturn5 and layouts just ran into the ocean.

I personally do not believe that we went to the moon in 69, or ever. Just based on comments from people at NASA in the last decade. But this really confirms that they didn't when he says things like he does when describing the Earth at 24:00-:12. The distance between the two bodies are the same, yet the Earth is SO MUCH larger than the moon, so how is it that he can say the Earth is so small, and describe it as being smaller than the moon appears from Earth? Anyone have an explanation? I'm not trying to spark the traditional debate here. I look at it the way a jury would, is there reasonable doubt?

You haven't studied the evidence. Go off and read the books by Collins, Lovell, Kranz, and others. Learn what you're trying to tear down before just blindly saying you don't believe it because all that does it make you look like a dashed fool.
@oscarin13

When did he say that it looked smaller than the Moon? Yes, the Earth is big but it only occupies about 2 angular degrees of the lunar sky. When you're used to seeing the Earth up close, either from a plane or from a spacecraft in low-Earth orbit, seeing it from 380,000 km away must be quite the experience.
