Astronomy of the Bhagavat Purana Part 3 of 3: Vedic / Hindu cosmology

My explanations are based on the works of Sadaputa das (Dr Richard Thomson), and also, references from the research of Danavir Goswami.
The purpose of my presentation is to glorify the Srimad Bhagavatam: presenting the 5th Canto, chapters 16-26, in an accessible way that can be appreciated by those devoted to the Puranas as well as those familiar with modern astronomy.

If your interested in giving a clearer picture of Rahu, remember Rahu lies along the orbital path of the Moon - Not displaced like you had in your image. But that point on the moons path that Rahu lies, is where it crosses the ecliptic(The apparent path the sun travels). That crossing point is always shifting along the ecliptic about every 18 months(before it returns to the same position). This is why we don't always have an eclipse every new moon, and when we do have an eclipse, not always a full eclipse. It's best to think of Rahu as a mathematical point in space(from an astronomical point of view). Also, Rahu represents the crossing of the ecliptic from below the ecliptic to above it. While Ketu, which is always 180 degrees opposite Rahu crosses the ecliptic from above to below the ecliptic. Now above and below(ecliptic) is meant to have the same correspondance as the vantage point that would be the northern/southern hemisphere of earth. That being said, Ketu itself can be the one present during an eclipse ( again because both Rahu and Ketu represent points on the ecliptic but 180 degrees apart, being opposite each other.) Also in western astrology, Rahu and Ketu are known as the North and South nodes of the Moon.

15:57, that is the Vedic cosmology. The West is also approaching it to some extent. Lord Krishna is the source and background of everyone and everything. It is the eternity and infinity, at the same time the emptiest emptiness. However, do you ask how Lord Krishna managed to manifest as the source of everything? He can do so because I have worked out the concept for it.

It's quite curious that what you describe here is very similar to what is shown during a shamanic journey. An infinite-dimensional reality that is akin to a fractal tree whose branches make up all forms and yet in every singular point the whole universe is present... When you sense those gigantic pathways that move across dimensions all around and through you, as if they were hidden behind curtains of perception; when you realise that your mind isn't playing tricks as you see/feel the hued auras emanating from words, thoughts and body-motions or coming from the sky, the trees and the earth; when you know for certain that existence is eternal and that being is the greatest gift that you can receive; at that point there's really no doubt about what Truth is. It's very freeing to grasp that everyone is part of the body of creation, not separated entities but rather unique aspects of the whole, then compassion is less of a method and more an understanding that arises naturally... Also, it's funny how easy it is to stop the connection with those states of perception with the slightest missteps, and rightly so. Glad I came across your channel, it quenched my thirst.

Many years back when I was a boy, I heard stories of Naga Sadhus. I come from Gujarat. During Shivratri, trainfull of Naga Sadhus travelled to Junagadh for a dip in the Holy Kund. People said that when the went in the water for the dip, they disappeared. Could they have travelled to the Naga Loka through tunnels/portals under the water in these Holy Kunds?

Hare Krishna prabhu, accept my reverences. I have two questions, if you can answer me please: 1) In the SB it said that Brahma enter the water to find his source, but Garbhodakasyi Visnu is not under the water but in the surface of the Garbhodaka ocean. 2) If the city of Brahma is placed on the top of mont sumeru, why is in the top of the brahmanda his abode? Because the top of mont Sumeru is ( in comparison with the brahmananda) in a very low physically place, even bellow the sun. So he lives in satyaloka or in the top of mont sumeru? Thanks prabhu, Hare Krishna
@RadhaMohanonutube
@RadhaMohanonutube 2 года назад
1) before Brahna crested anything, one could say there was 'water everywhere'. I understood the Garbhodaka ocean to be a state of unborn or unorganized matter. 2) Brahma's main abode is in Satyaloka at the 'top' of this universe. But one could say that Brahmapuri, at the top of Mt Meru is like an embassy realm and/or an interface between Satyaloka and the earth.

Hare krishna prabhu. I have other questions, if you have the time to answer. 1) Bhumandala is rotating in it's axis? Or it's stacionary? 2) The earth it's rotating in it's axis? In your video says that indeed it's rotating but Dhanavir Goswami says that the earth it is not rotating in it's axis, but the north star is rotating. 3)When the sun is rotanting in it's helliocentric orbit from Mont Meru, from our perspective from earth when the sun passes through the nort part of the Mont Meru, in some point the sun will be in the back of mont, and why is it that from the earth we don't see like the shadow of mont Meru, because the sun will be on the back and Mont Meru on the front, 4) I understand the orbit of the sun when it passes around mont meru ( it takes 1 year) but i'm not understanding why we have day and night, or the daily movements of the Sun. Thanks for all prabhu
@radhamohandasmanorcomms1043
@radhamohandasmanorcomms1043 2 года назад
Thanks for your questions, which I will do my best to answer: 1) Bhumandala is rotating around Mount Meru . 2) The earth does rotating in it's axis if you take the angel that it takes one year for the sun to orbit the earth. However if you take the angle that the sun orbits on a daily basis then the sun is completely stationary. Both can be correct. Its all about relative motion in space. 3) To my understanding Meru is completely invisible to us and does not cast a visible shadow when the sun is the other side of it 4) This is covered in my answer to question 2)

Hare Krishna Radha Mohan Prabhu. pamho. agtsp. Question is for Vedic reference. At 13.14 you provide a cross section view of the inner universe, the 4 billion-mile diameter as "physical" miles, x-axis. My question is not about that. What is your Vedic reference for the 4 billion-mile high y-axis 'celestial' heavenly sphere? From Srimad Bhagavatam I've only understood it as 2 billion miles high. It's the 2 billion mile radius to the 4 billion mile wide diameter. No? Of course, brahmanda also mean egg...so does 'egg' mean 'oblong' from another perspective? Thank you for your inspiring service. Hare Krishna

@@radhamohandasmanorcomms1043 Indeed. Thank you for the comfirmation. This subject is a big hobby for me. Are you still moving forward with further understanding this material...in wanting to continue to better present it? Do you have any interest in trying to bridge the gap of confusion between the demigod understanding of the universe and the human, if even possible (keeping in mind what Sukadeva Goswami says in SB 5.16.4)(for anyone's interest, www.vedabase.net/sb/5/16/en)? I'm pointing at the spherical VS. plane camps. Certainly we can find a better way to resolve the "round" issue that satisfies both the 'bhugolists' and the 'brahmandalsits'? I've given it some thought (for eg, consider the Van Allen belt, the abode of Yakshas, bhutas, etc. that may have light-bending properties in the physical domain). I'm keen to find mates who want to unpack this further..

@@radhamohandasmanorcomms1043 Haribol. They are equally good. So I've only just came upon your videos now, so I will want to watch them a number of times again. I can get back to you if you like? I would watch your videos for clarification, for some fresh insight (although I don't usually find much fresh insight from anyone -- say in solving the bhugola/bhumandala riddle...like how the Sun appears overhead when it shouldn't if Bharat varsha was really the flat tip of Jambhudvipa at the center of a 4 billion-mile wide plane), and to find opportunities to rephrase something or create a diagram to do so, correct mistakes/misinformation, or even just to add information that should (in my humble opinion) be there (like the sphere/plane conundrum).

Polaris is said to be direct north.. always... that is Surya Siddhanta... so this leaning Earth story is not Vedic...... however..... how can i fault you.... you have the best ending to any astronomical video.... because the goal of life is mentioned herein... i would like to ask about southern stars... my thinking was the bhagola.. the starry sphere which rotates.... shows the northern stars at the north of hte universe.. and southern stars at the south of hte universe... here you have Garbodakha ocean to the south... so what about southern stars if there is ocean below us and sky above us... that is a serious question.. thank you for your wonderful presentation.. The Pleiades are likely to include beings classed as Upadevas, and classed as part of bhuvarloka. This indicates more superior and cultured humanoids to ourselves. ie they are a little higher. Vaikuntha is the spiritual realm and its distance from earth in physical terms is irrelevant cause it is not a physical place. Its easier to think in terms of how 'inner' Vaikunth
