Continuing our series on Meeting the China challenge militarily, we focus on the Sikkim-Bhutan sector of the India-China boundary in this episode of Strategic Insight. Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale is in discussion with Lt Gen Devraj Anbu (Retd), former Vice Chief of the Indian Army and Maj Gen BK Sharma (Retd), Director of USI, co-host of this programme. Both the general officers elaborate on India's dominant position overlooking the Chumbi Valley and how well-poised Indian deployments are in North Sikkim. Both also elaborate on India-Bhutan relations and its effect on the military strategy in the vital Siliguri Corridor as well as on the north-eastern region

The erstwhile sikkim kingdom stretched from chumbi valley to sevoke in siliguri and from ilam to pedong (I'm sure there will be some A hole troller disputing and say sikkim ws nepals etc BS).....the thing is when we have geographical edge/dominate the ridges against china then why don't we insure it further by improving the road infrastructure the recent nakula pass episode which is in north sikkim and is connected by 2 roads one via penengla and the other via dikchu the condition of both the roads are in absolute tatters i mean pathetic the BRO does a shoddy work and has done next to nothing in maintaining let alone broadening the roads for army movement when push comes to shove situation..... is it corruption or beaurecracy within the BRO that's failing the local population & army i dunno but it seriously undermines the entire purpose of BROs work ethics.....gud discussion on sikkim we need to have more and focus more on infrastructure pls🙏

@indiaexpress4547
@indiaexpress4547 3 года назад
Talking about Bhutan and Nepal, and worried about India's security in relation to them? These two ex-generals are not exactly big picture people. About India's neighbors, this is an extract from a written piece about political realism by a gentleman Iftekhar Chowdhury who compares them to the Melian Dialogue of Greek historian Thucydides: Much has been written about the parallels between the United States-China rivalry and the Sparta-Athens power struggle. Less examined is the Melian Dialogue as applied to South Asia. In the modern context, China's strategy in dealing with India is more circumscribed: The goal is not so much to subjugate its southern neighbour but to keep India from impeding China's rise to becoming peer of the US, by creating difficulties for it to completely align with the US.... The SOP from China to India has been the lure of 'disengagement' along the Line of Actual Control, swopping a piece of India's restraint for a piece of peace. At the second level, China is cast in the role of Athens while tiny Nepal and Bhutan play the part of Melos in the strategic game. With a nudge and a wink from China, deeply involved with Nepal's infrastructure projects, Nepali Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli a communist, feels emboldened to stand up to India. His government is fanning anti-Indian sentiments domestically and has incorporated into Nepal's map some territories also claimed by India. Tiny Bhutan was already wary of opening itself to regional transport arrangements linking with India for fear of an onrush of tourists. Left to itself, it would prefer direct diplomatic links with Beijing that India would not allow for. To exert pressure, China laid claim to a chunk of Bhutanese territory, creating further awkwardness for India, which is treaty-bound to protect Bhutan's security. The Chinese intent here is also not to destroy the two Meloses, but to wean them from the adversary. How the strategy will pan out, we are yet to see. Sun Tsu Art of War

@john doe that's the point. When you sit in leg cross gesture or like sometimes arms close gesture. It makes a psychological barrier,thereby makes you defensive. It won't let you express that freely.
@kapilsinghmandiyal
@kapilsinghmandiyal 3 года назад
@john doe *Sitting and standing with legs crossed Body language* Sitting and standing with legs crossed, like crossing the arms, indicates a fundamentally defensive attitude. While arm-crossing is a subconscious attempt by a person to protect his vital organs- the heart and the lungs, crossing the legs is an attempt to protect the genitals. Of course, crossing the legs seems like a silly and ineffective way to hide the genitals, but our unconscious mind rarely works rationally. To be more precise, it works in ways that don’t seem rational to us. When a person feels extremely defensive, they might cross their legs besides crossing the arms. This helps them achieve a complete sense of protection since it covers all their ventral delicate organs. We usually observe this gesture in a person who’s standing at a distance from a group. They may feel unaccepted, self-conscious, or anxious or they may simply be a stranger to the group. Such a vulnerable position demands an action that makes us feel secure. By subconsciously protecting all our ventral delicate organs, we successfully achieve that sense of security. Standing with legs crossed (leg scissors) Sometimes, when people are feeling mildly defensive, they don’t fully cross their legs in the standing position. Instead, they simply cross one foot over the other while the displaced foot rests on the toes. This is a kind of partial legs-crossing gesture. The defensive feelings are not intense, but somewhere in the back of their mind, they’re unsure and feel that they might get ‘kicked in the nuts’. This gesture can also convey a different attitude. When a person is totally committed to a conversation, unwilling to leave, they might ‘fold-up’ in position and rivet themselves to the spot by taking up this gesture. The logic behind this is that when we’re afraid of something, we want to run away from it and so our bodies remain in an alert position. When we don’t feel like running away from a situation, we tend to fold ourselves into position just as animals fold themselves up when they’re relaxing or sleeping. We can’t run away if we’re riveted to the spot and have to unwind first in case we decide the situation has turned unfavorable. We do this gesture when we know we have to stay in one place for quite a while. For example, when we have to wait for a person, a bus, or a train. When people know they’re about to engage in a long conversation, they may lean against the wall and take up this gesture. It conveys the non-verbal message, “I’m not going anywhere. Keep talking.” Sometimes both the attitudes of defensiveness and ‘unwillingness to leave’ can be simultaneously present. When people, especially young couples, meet each other for the first time, they feel a bit defensive. Still, they don’t feel like leaving since the experience is exciting. So it’s common to observe the ‘leg scissors’ gesture in such situations. If you observe two people talking to each other for the first time and both take up this gesture, you can safely assume that they’re either committed to the conversation. Additionally, they might be feeling slightly defensive in the back of their minds. standing with legs crossed If one of them uncrosses his legs, it either means he’s opening up to the other person or preparing to leave. If the other person continues the ‘leg-scissors’ position, it means the first person wasn’t opening up but preparing to leave because the rapport is broken without re-establishment. This is how you do elimination to figure out the meaning of gestures that can have over one meaning. You have to look at the whole situation, everything that precedes and succeeds it. Had the first person really ‘opened up’ to the other person, then both of them should’ve assumed the ‘opened up’ position as per the rules of rapport establishment. But since that did not happen, it probably means they got off on a wrong footing. Sitting cross-legged body language It conveys the same ‘closed’ and defensive attitude as that in the standing position. During a conversation, it can indicate a withdrawn attitude. People who cross their legs in the seated position tend to talk in shorter sentences and reject more proposals. They’re also are more inattentive to what’s going on compared to those who sit in a more ‘open’ position. Apart from the usual defensive attitude, the seated legs-crossed position can convey a lot more. For example, while seated, women frequently cross and uncross their legs if they like what’s going on or are in the company of people they like. Women use submissive gestures to display attractiveness. Sitting in a leg-crossed position, besides revealing the thigh, also signals submissiveness. Therefore, women unconsciously assume this position when they sit to appear attractive. Unsurprisingly, many polls and surveys have revealed that men find the seated legs-crossed position the most attractive sitting position a woman can take. crossing legs body language Why sitting cross-legged is attractive Sitting with legs crossed reduces the overall perceived size of a woman. Dominance and submission are proportional to body size. The more the body size, the more dominant an organism is perceived to be. Less the body size, the more submissive an organism is perceived to be. This is one reason men like to be larger or taller and women want to appear smaller. (Courtesy Parvej Hanan.MA psychology)

Ladakh has importance in China as it is referred to as Shangrila in some texts. China is also interested in rare earth materials. Arunachal is also of great importance due to rare earth materials. Due to the Chickens neck which can be blocked, India is extremely vulnerable to attack in NE. If war happens all bridges and airways will be at stake on Day 1. India is better off initiating land purchasing/exchange with Bangladesh near Siliguri corridor. Instead of extreme defensive doctrine, India is better off with a highly aggressive forward moving doctrine. How much you will talk about defending the Siliguri corridor which is a meak and cowardly way of fighting. Go on a blitzkrieg offense and cut off Tibet from rest of China. How much can you dig yourself in a defensive position. If war happens, it will be very short, so only advance and don’t give up occupied land. China only respects aggression and ruthlessness (Japan, Mongol....etc)
