Atari Buying Intellivision and WHY This is a GOOD MOVE

Hey John! I agree completely. I am an old school, original Atari guy.. I had the 2600 when it was new, fresh, and I was a young kid. I remember the early platform wars! That being said, I think Atari, for being a small company, has done an AMAZING job of breathing new life into Atari, both with new classic games, new classic hardware, and I even like the VCS. No, not perfect, but they really seem to care and try. I have recently started collecting for Intellivision, I think having Atari at the helm, they have the opportunity to do some fun, exciting things with the classic IP. It will be fun to watch! The thing is - people want to play those old Intellivision games with those crazy Intellivision controllers. So whatever Atari does - a remake of those controllers should come along. I wouldn't wanna play intellivision games with Atari controllers. No way.

Man I feel like it would be it would be ironic to make an adapter or shall we call it the Intellivision system changer that makes the 2600+ play intv games good times if it went full circle.

If some one had to buy intellivision,I would like to have Atari buy it. This move has so much potential! It took me a long time to get an intellivision being a retro gamer but I was very impressed. I am huge intellivision fan now. The newer homebrews are freaking amazing!

I hope they eventually buy Colecovision and Odyssey 2.

I just bought an Atari 2600plus and it's great. Here in New Zealand intellivision carts are rare because it never came here. I came up with my own solution. I bought a mini PC with batocera pre loaded so my retro gaming needs are now totally covered.

All I’ve ever wanted is an Intellivision mini HD. Thanks to the Amico disaster, I figured that dream was dead, but, now, it seems possible again.

Man, they’d probably make a killing selling reproduction overlays - so many games out in the wild are missing those. While they’ve had their share of fumbles, I have to hand it to the new Atari for some of the moves they’ve made in the past year. The fact that the 2600+’s controllers work on original hardware opens the door for additional sales to replace old, tired controllers - especially the paddle controllers! Would it be asking too much for Driving controllers? Considering only ONE game uses them, maybe. 😩 Anyway… Personally, it would be nice to see them give the Intellivision the same treatment. I’d definitely be into buying classic re-releases of games I don’t have.

INTV II was my first home console in 1983. Favorite games: Cloudy Mountain, Tron Deadly Discs, Lock 'n Chase, Major League Baseball, Bomb Squad, and Night Stalker.

A Polymega Intellivison cartridge module for the Atari VCS would be nice.

I'm reading a good book about the history of videogames. Chapters about the old days, Bushnell, Kassar, Atari, early programmers, this and that..., everything. It's interesting to witness things still evolve. And, I also would buy an Intellivision 50. But, it'd be nice if every old gen console reimagining, like the Atart 2600+, or mini version remakes also had composite AV outs sitting beside the HDMI. Just to be able to easily throw it onto a crt.

I would love an Intellivision 50. I was born in 85 so I just barely missed out on all of it. The collections are how I get to experience it.

Intellivision hit the market mostly in mid 1980. Atari had a 3 yr head start. Plus the fact that Atari systems lasted so long, most people were not going to buy this of they already had Atari. Remember too that for arcade games, Atari ruled the roost in terms of the catalog

Atari 50th was an amazing collection and a great educational piece on the releases and the platform itself. If it wasn't for that cart, I would not know what Secret Quest is (and I'm glad I was able to get a copy of it too). The adapter idea for the 2600+ sounds like a great idea. I would also like to see a similar collection to 50th on Switch. Hey, did you know that Astrosmash and Shark Shark were remade on PlayStation Home back in the day? I still have remnants of that on my PSVita because if you owned the Intellivision Console and Arcade Machines in PS Home, they made an app that plays their contents. At the moment, without hacking the system, it's the last true functioning piece of software from the PS Home era. On a side note, I also need Atari to somehow give Melody Board functionality to the 2600+. They make great homebrews with that board and I wanty copy of Deepstone Catacomb to play on something other than my original 2600 hardware

In my dream world, a Tron: Deadly Discs Recharged would happen. That was easily my favorite Intellivision game.

Yes, an IntelliVision+ console would be absolutely fantastic! And a cartridge adapter for the 2600+! Options! Thanks for sharing about how IntelliVision owns unreleased 2600 ports, prototypes, etc. I knew nothing about this.

The 2600+ is really cool, and yes, Intellivision games and controllers + homebrew for it would be astonishing! Still, my dream would be an Atari/Intelli/Coleco FPGA console with cartridge support. The Collectorvision Phoenix and Atariman project should merge! Sadly, Crispy, the Atariman developer, passed away some time ago, rip.

I absolutely love arcade style games (I have no time for these massive new titles), being able to cycle through all the old arcade style titles would be awesome.

I trust Wade Rosen more than the previous owners of the Intellivision brand, but still... errgh. Atari seems to want to corner the market on pre-crash gaming, and I can't say I'm entirely comfortable with that. If they start putting the squeeze on homebrew Intellivision games, it's not going to make me a happy camper.

This is not meant as a knock against intelevision, but I don’t think I could name five intelevision titles. Aside from Astro smash and football. And I grew up getting a 2600 for Christmas of 77 (Sears telegames). So I think there’s an audience not just for those who didn’t experience that era but for those in that era who didn’t have access to to the machine. The stories and their view of the industry would add a lot to it

It would be more surprising if Atari didn't do something like Atari 50 or the Recharged series with Intellivision IPs.

Maybe now we can finally get an Intellivision flashback or clone console with micro sd card that lets us play all the games using a touchpad controller

Sadly I’ve never played anything Intellivision 🤷🏼‍♂️ I do find this acquisition interesting though and another stepping stone for Atari to keep climbing back into the relevancy of gaming again

I 1000% Agree. I would be hyped to see the intellivision redone foe modern times also. I am a fan of ALL platforms also. I'm excited to see what atari will bring to the table!! I want to also say thank you for all you do.

If you asked me "what is a feature you'd like to see on an Intellivision+ console," the top of my list would be the option to display the controller overlays on screen in the black borders to either side of the game since it's otherwise empty space playing a 4:3 game on a widescreen TV. It's definitely not guaranteed anyone who collects for the system still has all their original overlays, I certainly don't. Would be nice if they offered some physical reprintings of them too for the games they intend to sell. Other than that I would ask to just improve the build quality of the controllers over the originals, they were not the greatest.

They may not list the games for a while. They still haven’t said which 100 PC games they acquired only the brands that published them. Including Infogrames which is what this Atari used to be, and they’ve now re-launched Infogrames probably for those PC games.

About a year ago, I commented on AtariAge that Atari should acquire Intellivision. Now what about the other classic consoles? Most of ColecoVision's games were licensed arcade properties, so I don't think that one is worth it. Maybe Magnavox, but I can't recall many notable games on that other than KC Munchkin, and this game may still be banned from being sold due to the Namco/Pac-Man lawsuit. Vectrex also had mostly licensed games. So there are no classic consoles left for Atari to pursue. Instead, I think Atari should look to acquiring the libraries from the rights holders of other classic arcade game makers. Cinematronics is the topmost -- Star Castle for example would fit with the Atari classic games library.

Thanks for the video John, Intellivision was my first game console and I have a lot of nostalgia for it , at first I had mixed feeling , but Atari have better funds than the actual owner , I think they could do good things , like recharged or sequel to great games the dungeon and dragons cloudy mountain , do an intellivision + , I know that Digital Eclipse are excited about the intellivision acquisition, I would easily see them doing an Intellivision compilation like the Atari 50, I bought the Atari 50 on steam and its really well done

I like the idea of a cartridge adapter for the 2600+ but would definitely prefer something like an Intellivision+. There are heaps of great games on the Intellivision, it has one of the best versions of Burger Time and I love the sounds in Beamrider compared to other versions.

I would probably do an Intellivision+ (How bout an Intellivision III 😉) I definitely want to see Intellivision support for the GSP. Of course they would need to do a controller, hopefully an Intellivision III/A5200 style... Retro nostalgia aside, I despise the OG controller! There is a lot of potential here, I hope it pans out. I think the best part of this acquisition... Telling Tommy Tallarico to pound sand.

I owned a Jag. Bought for 20 bux at KB in 1996. Worst 20 bux i ever spent.

So Tommy Tallarico sold it? Because he was still the owner of the Intellivision brand (yes, not only Amico, he bought the name from the original owners, one passed away several years ago). I’m also confused, so there is a seperation in the game library ownership? Which is not uncommon btw. German gaming company BBG Entertainment also bought games, only they didn’t buy ownership, they bought exclusive licensing. It was Shark Shark and Astrosmash.

There weren't 200 Intellivision games, and many of the ones they did have were also on the 2600. So I'm a bit skeptical, especially because my favorites 2 INtellivision games are AD&D and one of those was bought by Amico.

Hopefully we can get some good Intellivision hardware along the lines of the 2600+ now, even if just for some new high quality controllers. Stuff’s getting old. Personally Intellivision is my favorite console pre 6th gen, it has such a unique charm to it.

Intellivision+ console is what I want.

I would much rather have something like an Intellivision+ than an Amico anyway. Amico sounded awesome at first, but Tallarico was a snake oil salesman, and when they decided it wouldn't be compatible with original game carts it turned me off.

I knew Intellivision would go belly up, seeing as they have been running in circles with the Amico for years. All i'm really hoping for is that they revive that Earthworm Jim sequel that was in the works.

while this acquisition could theoretically be great for retro gamers, I think the retro community will ultimately become problematic. I wouldn't mind seeing a clone console created by Atari that'll play their old games and in television games as well

I don't know if this is a good idea for Atari to buy the Intellivision. I'm sure the Intellivision was made by Mattel Electronics. Do you think Atari is asking permission from Mattel? If not, I can already tell it might be... If so, I guess I might give it a chance.
