Many atheists claim to be sincerely open minded about the evidences of a Creator. They call Christians narrow-minded and intellectually lazy. But this video of astrophysicist Hugh Ross and scientist Peter Atkins might prove otherwise. Tune in...
About Peter Atkins
Peter William Atkins (born 10 August 1940) is an English chemist and a Fellow of Lincoln College at the University of Oxford. He retired in 2007. He is a prolific writer of popular chemistry textbooks, including Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Molecular Quantum Mechanics. Atkins is also the author of a number of popular science books, including Atkins' Molecules, Galileo's Finger: The Ten Great Ideas of Science and On Being. (Wikipedia)
About Hugh Ross
Hugh Norman Ross (born July 24, 1945) is a Christian apologist, and old-Earth creationist. Ross obtained his Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Toronto. and his B.Sc. degree in physics from the University of British Columbia. He established his own ministry in 1986, called Reasons to Believe. (wiki)
The video is fully scripted and edited by Naga Seminarian channel.

In the first place, the Bible was never a science textbook rather it’s a book of theological messaging… This scientist would have to resolve how he can reject the Bible for not being what it was never intended to be… it is an illogical and incongruent argument… If he can make that argument, I can then reject my dog for not being a cat…

Modern atheism for many of its representatives has become part of the meaning of life and has become something like faith. Of course, one should be careful in such statements, that's why I wrote: "something like faith". But in a large number of cases it is. This is neither bad nor good, but if I were such people, I would think about it. In my inner search, including psychedelics, and in my youth I tried dozens of different substances of this group, I asked myself a question: if this is "proof" of the existence of something we call "The Devine", then I am rather an atheist. Since these experiences, although similar in many people (e.g. DMT), one might as well believe in same kind of hallucinations in a state of delirium tremens(a very crude comparison, to shorten the text). In short, I look at these experiences from Peter Atkins' point of view. I found God in a meaningful way outside of these practices. And I experienced him less colorfully, but much more clearly. I was baptized at the age of 7 on my own initiative, the first in my Soviet family (I'm talking about time period, not ideology), and my parents followed a little later. I became the first one rather by technical circumstances. But I believed in God with all my heart. With adolescence this faith left, left imperceptibly. More precisely, 100% certainty that Jesus was the answer was gone. Next, I searched anew for what was always in front of me. No, I did not become a follower of this or that religion, I read texts, studied scientific works on the subject of this or that religious doctrine, experimented with consciousness. But intellectually I realized that all this was not the same. God returned unexpectedly, but in a very "demonstrative" way, for which I thank Him very much. It is a great blessing when you are suddenly shown his presence so literally and unquestioningly. Perhaps this happened because I was not looking for "proof" but was persistent and consistent in my search. Only God knows why this happened. And I will answer the unasked question: I am a Russian Orthodox Christian. Thank you for reading this story and God bless you!

If nothing can convince him, why would anybody bother to convice him? He has made his mind. The Bible is talks a lot about his kind. It's a waste of time. Leave him alone and just let the man live until the Creator finally takes him.

Questions like, "What sort of evidence would convince you that God exists?", are disingenuous. There is no evidence I have seen that has convinced me. Therefore, it would need to be something completely new to me. I cannot imagine what that evidence would be. Do you think there is evidence to support the notion of a god's existence? If so, what is it? My only condition is that it must be evidence, not just another bad argument.

This gentleman seems to have a very nonchalant attitude toward Heaven and Hell, claiming he would be bored in Heaven and would rather spend some time in Hell, almost making it sound as if God would allow such a thing, letting someone visit Hell to relieve the boredom. He is the kind of guy C.S. Lewis had in mind when he wrote the following: “There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, in the end, 'Thy will be done.' All that are in Hell, choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no Hell...There is no need to be worried by factious people who try to make the Christian hope for Heaven ridiculous by saying they do not want to spend eternity playing harps. The answer to such people is if they cannot understand books written for grown-ups, they should not talk about them.” ― C.S. Lewis: Mere Christianity If C.S. Lewis isn't enough of an authority on the matter, he may want to consider what Christ said: “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will render an account for every careless word they speak. By your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” ― Matthew 12: 36-37 It's one thing to mock God, it's another thing to openly challenge him. There is a line from the movie The Usual Suspects where one of the characters said: "I don't believe in God but I'm afraid of Him." That is a more sensible position than the one taken by this gentleman. Or as Al Pacino put it when he played Satan in the film The Devil's Advocate: "Vanity, definitely my favorite sin."

Interesting, he didn't say anything about a prior commitment to naturalism and yet the voiceover says that's why he 'refuses' to believe. Just a strawman. I don't have a prior commitment to naturalism, it's just that all the best explanations for things are natural. There are supernatural explanations, but given only those 2 possibilities, miracles are by definition less likely. What I heard Peter say is that evidence of those grandiose type to him would be more likely madness or dreams, etc. Personally I don't know what would convince me either. I spent many years seeking. But god does, and yet chooses not to show me. Why not? Why does god create skeptics?

You're wrong. He is saying that he can't imagine any evidence that would convince him of the existence of God. He is not saying that no evidence exists. Once again, the religious lie for their own purposes. Science is based on observational and repeatable truth. Religion is not just based on lies, it depends on lies to exist.
@mitchelldenny1966
@mitchelldenny1966 2 месяца назад
Science and Christianity rely on faith and belief but that is where the similarity ends. Science perpetually explores and seeks to explain material phenomena, but is based on the belief that all physical truth is observable and repeatable. Christianity explains spiritual phenomena, such as thoughts, emotions, passions, desires - all of which are not material. They transcend the material world and are therefore of a higher order in terms of origin. Christianity is based on belief in God and the spiritual realm as superior and encompassing the physical realm.
