@whyaskwhybuddry
@whyaskwhybuddry 7 месяцев назад
@chris424cm, The "Scientific Method" was invented by Young Earth Creationists like Newton, Kepler and Copernicus who expected to find Order and Design in Nature because they believed in the Designer. The real issue isn't that Athiests aren't "Ignoring evidence for God", but that they don't even know what that "Evidence" would even look like. How would you know that $1 million dollars US exists if you've never seen it with your eyes in person? How do you know what caused the formation of SpacetimeandMatter, and the "Great Expansion" when you didn't personally witness it? I suspect that if Jesus Himself personally appeared in your bedroom tonight, slapped you in the head with His fleshy palm and said "I AM God", you'd be like Ebenezer Scrooge and chalk it up to hallucination from undigested dinner from that night.

Fortunately for us, he isn't representative of English education. It really would be fascinating to get his life story though, to see where and when it was that he veered into Flat Earth ideology, 'cause I really don't know how it is that people end up there. I know for some it comes from familial pressure - for example our English compatriot and atheist RU-vidr Emma Thorne has discussed her upbringing under the influence of her conspiracy theorist father and done videos about the sorts of things she believed before being convinced otherwise. And I also know that once a person has embraced one conspiracy theory, they tend to have to embrace others either to justify the initial belief or because the alternative cannot be justified when holding that initial belief; for instance, most Flat Earthers are going to be Moon Landing Hoaxers too because otherwise they would have to accept that the Earth has been seen from space. And then they need to believe in a global government conspiracy, and then they need to determine a motive, and so it isn't difficult to see the path that they take from "I can see the Isle of Man from Blackpool" to "the sciences are a satanic global conspiracy". I suspect that though most roads lead to the same mass-conspiracy conclusion, the origins of each conspiracy theorist are different. And I don't think it's difficult to see the urge to believe something fantastical - we do it all of the time when we watch movies. The flaw is in... well, it was exactly what this caller demonstrated repeatedly: confirmation bias; they accept one erroneous belief, then another and another, and they wind up with what they believe is this complex model of the world that's harder to shake than the original idea because it's chock-full of ad hoc rationalisation. Folding Ideas did a great video on this - it's called "In Search of a Flat Earth". It starts by exploring the Flat Earth belief, but in the later part of the video also explores the other conspiracy theories embraced by that community and how they weave together into this self-justifying monolithic belief. ...but I'm waffling. It just truly would be fascinating to know where and when these beliefs started for people, because I'm not surprised at how they end up where they do, but knowing what started them down that path would be interesting.

it goes both ways. its based on how you perceive the world. for a flat earther they give you evidence and you reject it and vise versa. they both think they already have the truth. that goes same thing to atheism and theism. all of the people have their own criteria of what makes an evidence and their logic and reason is what it comes down to.
@Bob-of-Zoid
@Bob-of-Zoid 7 месяцев назад
@@conspiracy1914 No it doesn't go both ways! The truth is the truth, and there is only one reality we all live in, you cannot have your own! Some people perceive the world to be flat and that "THEY" are trying to kill us all, and faking us out with "Science", and yet not one of them can show any evidence for it, just like no one has ever shown any viable evidence for their god! You are missing one major component: TRUE JUSTIFIED BELIEF people can believe whatever they f they want to and all too often do, and you are right in saying "all of the people have their own criteria of what makes an evidence and their logic and reason is what it comes down to", but it cannot make them right just because, and the ones who are right are right and the ones who are wrong are wrong! Bad standards of evidence are bad and lead to false conclusions! It's worse though with some, like Howard here, because he does have all of the great evidence at his fingertips, but he is rejecting it outright because it doesn't comport with his preferred fantasy! Anyone who understands why he is wrong and that the earth is a sphere, has true justified belief they are right, Howard's belief is not justified, nor even justifiable! The difference is how people come to truth which dictates who will ultimately have it, and "Both think they have the truth" is a terrible way of saying it, because only one side has good reason to reject the other side, and so it is not an even playing field. IOW: You don't hold a gun to your head because you think it's not loaded, but when You have more than sufficient evidence it really isn't, and even then it's a bad idea, as some moron may try the same based on shit evidence after seeing you do it! Howard has been doing this for years now, and belongs in a mental institution, it's that bad!

Not to mention why point-to-point radio communication across land always has a range limit, even when involving radio towers and/or mountain-peak stations. On a flat Earth, this should be impossible: there should be perfect line-of-sight radio communication from any point on the Earth to any other, unobstructed point. In reality, the curvature of our spherical Earth always puts an ultimate limit on how far radio signals can be transmitted & received before the planetary mass of the Earth itself blocks them (unless we rely on ham radio techniques such as exploiting the sunspot cycle).
@TheDahaka1
@TheDahaka1 8 месяцев назад
@@zenkim6709 Yeah, but I heard roundabout unscientific attempts at explaining that with something like absurdly powerful atmospheric deviation of waves, light and radio. It would be the same explaination as to why the Sun goes down the horizon maintaining the same size instead of going far away while staying on top of the flat Earth. Its light just gets pushed down to the ground after a certain distance, and radio waves would be affected by that too. Why artillery needs to adjust for the Coriolis effect. 6. Seasons 7. The phases of the moon. 8. Why ships disappear bottom first over the horizon. 9. How a sextant could possibly work on a flat earth. 10. Why all the stars appear to rotate around the north star north of the equator, but they all rotate the opposite direction around the southern bald spot south of the equator. 11. Why can you calculate the time it takes a Foucault pendulum to complete a circle knowing only your latitude? 12. Even high school students have duplicated the Cavendish experiment, how is that possible on a flat earth? If mass attracts mass, “down” must be toward the center of the earth. That would be exciting on a flat earth. 13. solar eclipses. 14. Lunar eclipses. 15. Why is the angle of the North Star/Southern bald spot related to your latitude? This list is in no particular order, made off the cuff and typed on a tiny device. So kindly focus on the concepts and not the typos.

For point 2, I think what he said is that the 666 thing was just an internal critique. He doesn't actually believe that's the real value of anything, but he does think (somewhat incorrectly as the hosts explained) that's the number given by round-earthers. He just wanted to show that in that model 6 could also be considered a special number... for some reason?? I'm seriously confused about what he was trying to say, holistically. He used the omnipresence of the number 7 as an argument for god and everything, and the rebuttal was "that's just selection bias, 7 isn't any more special than 6 for example" and... it sounded like he was agreeing?? Like "yea you're right, for example in your model we see 6 a lot here and there"... but then that just proves that 7 isn't special? and his argument was wrong?? Or was it supposed to be a hypocrisy thing, like "O-oh w-well in YOUR model you ALSO have a special number, and it's six, heh!" Except that's insane. You would need a bay of an appropriate size, with a sea cliff on the target side, a good telescope with appropriate power and resolution, and some kind of arrangement for lowering a large, white target (maybe 5 meters X 5 meters) down the cliff face until it appeared to touch the water as observed from the opposite shore, coordinated by a cell phone connection, of course. It would be an easy 10,000 pounds, especially since he says he would allow only half the measurement predicted by earth's curvature. Take a sixer, sunblock, and binoculars. Go out to where you cannot see land, enjoy the water and the silence, feed the fish, throw fries to the seagulls, and when that gets boring head back to shore. On your way in, use the binocs and search the horizon. What's the first thing you see? It's either going to be the top of the marina flagpole or the "penthouse" suite in a luxury beachfront highrise. It’s a bit frustrating. People have a conclusion and then look for evidence to support that conclusion, regardless of the actual evidence they come across

Nitpick: It's medium. The singular form of media is medium. The news media are a collective pile of this medium and that. Not to imply "Middle" but "a general way/means of". Film is a medium of storytelling. A newspaper is a medium of delivering current events. Currency is a medium of exchange. Like I said, it's a nitpick, but now you know. A pleasant evening to you. :)

Im glad Arim asked the thing I always wonder when someone is so far into a delusion- why they think there are millions conducting the greatest conspiracy in history? His answer was similarly crazy but at least we know 😉.....Fact he was well aware, that on multiple occasions “ everyone was laughing at me...,” was in itself very amusing 😂.

that could happen on a flat disc, too. The Sun flies half a circle above the disc, then half a circle under it. But yes, we use the globe model to predict sunsets whenever wherever we want to, and it always works. I cannot even hope for 1 viable prediction from flat Earthers.

I once had a discussion where told a religious guy that a day was one rotation of the earth and he told me that the way we have days is that it is 24 hours. There is no way that he would ever pay out. This is typical behaviour of some flat-earther/science deniers, they offer a challenge with a substantial reward for providing evidence of x, y, or z, and then refuse to accept any evidence as valid because it conflicts with whatever they have already decided is the truth.

Just use that $10,000.00 to go on vacation across the equator and look at the night sky, where the stars will be different and rotating in the opposite direction and the face of the moon will be flipped upside down, which wouldn't happen on a disk but would be completely expected on a spheroid.
@lnsflare1
@lnsflare1 8 месяцев назад
Or go on a trip westwards . California is west of New York, China is west of California, India is west of China, Egypt is west of India, Spain is west of Egypt, New York is West of Spain. Perfectly mundane on a globe, completely impossible on a disk.
@donnievance1942
@donnievance1942 8 месяцев назад
@@lnsflare1 Wrong. On their flat earth model with the north pole at the center, going west is following a huge circle around the pole which they allow could be undertaken by following a compass bearing, giving the same observational result as what you're suggesting. The only way to prove your point would be to follow a series of straight-line sightings, checked with back sights, using a theodolite, which would be impossible crossing the ocean, because there would be nothing to take a sight on.

The Red Bull skydiver video shows quite clearly that the earth is round. The horizon he spoke of is clearly curved.
@queuecee
@queuecee 8 месяцев назад
The red bull video is using a very wide angle lens, so it's not possible to use it to say anything about the curvature. However, there are MANY videos, including amateur videos from high altitude balloons, that specifically use rectilinear lenses with no distortion which definitively show that there's a curve. If the flat earthers had any know-how, they could easily repeat these experiments. But for some reason, they don't...🤔

@mathiasrryba
@mathiasrryba 8 месяцев назад
The red bull video doesn't prove anything because of the lenses used. Curvature as well as horizon falling below "eye level" can be easily shown with simple experiments performed with home-made items and climbing a small mountain, preferrably next to the sea.
@donnievance1942
@donnievance1942 8 месяцев назад
@@mathiasrryba Perhaps using a homemade quadrant to sight level and observe that the distant horizon appears to fall below level? What these bozo flerfers don't grasp is that if the earth was flat, there would be no distinct horizon at all when the sea was observed from any height. The sea would just fade out at greater and greater distances until it was lost in the increasing atmospheric interference. At the level line there would be a transition zone where it was impossible to separate the sea from the sky.

I am from England and can confirm the earth is not round, I can see a hindu temple in the distance which is clearly in India, the ISS is actually a pac man character it goes across then appears instantly at the other side. Being of Norse descent I know there are the the 9 realms in the branches of ygddrasil so science has made a very expensive series of mistakes and needs to start again!

Actually, what was the most annoying aspect of this phone call is that he called with a religious implication about his pseudoscience, and no matter how many times you told him “We don’t care if you think the Earth is flat because it in no way proves God” he still kept going on and on about how the earth was flat. As much as you wanted to steer him away from using the shape of the earth as some sort of evidence for God, he kept just going back to the shape of the Earth. Absolutely bizarre!
