We’re back!!! And ready to cross the Atlantic (woohooo!)
In this episode, you follow our boat preparation day by day. We start by installing a new autopilot (our new Raymarine Evolution autopilot), haul out Polar Seal to replace some through-hulls and have new canvas made.

Can totally relate to going in the water and hoping there are no leaks. For me, it’s all about the money...if we have to go back up because there is a leak we can’t cure...it means huge expense...in our case here in S Africa, probably $700 USD. It’s soooo stressful going on to the water for me. We had been hauled for 7 months, and so many new holes, holes sealed, blisters repaired, and the list is endless (why there have been nothing but how to sailing videos for 7 months!) With Ryan almost in tears with worry about it, I broke out in tears too because this was so fresh for us!!! Sincerely, Rebecca on SV Brick House

Hi Ryan and Sophie, you guys speak my mind. There are always jobs to do, I have no clue about it. And the yards make me almost cry at some places. As an emergency backup, you should also always have appropriately sized balsa plugs wired at each through hull location in case of a failure of the fitting or the hose.

It's always relaxing hauling out. My best was when the lift driver quit for the day at 3:15 leaving us swinging half over the water. When we said, but we are living on board, he said "What" and put his fingers in his ears. Then said he didnt hear anything that was against the yard rules and went home!

Woncky Autopilots can usually be traced down to the location of the electronic compass or orientation of the compass such as elevation or position of the compass. The keel has a lot to do with effecting its accuracy. Try relocating it ( a true painstaking trial and error process) to see if it becomes more stable.

Hint with ladders in a boat yard. Strap the ladder to a stanchion. No chance of it falling when its strapped down. Helps confidence when you climb the ladder with both hands full.

Ryan put coconut oil on your lips they will heal up very quickly. Coconut oil is a natural anti-bacterial & virus fighter. It’s a must have on a boat for sunburn after you shower too. (Walmart coconut oil can be found in the cooking section (not the one in the cosmetic section) not the liquid coconut but the round container of it make sure it is “pure” or “refined” coconut oil with no additives ($7 -$10 walmart). Look up the benefits of coconut oil for skin & body too. Good luck on your Atlantic Crossing!! 🍀

We upgraded our autopilot too. We have two control heads so that if one fails the other one can be quickly plugged in and be up and running. The second control head is not connected to the main system so in the event of a lighting strike this autopilot will not be effected.

Instead of having a whole bunch of through-hulls (any one of which could sink a boat) which is typical, why not have one inlet through-hull connected to a manifold and distribution tubing which can deliver water wherever needed? Easier to place in a most strategic position, more robust, and more efficient to keep an eye on (being only one exterior fitting to regularly check). Much easier to replace branch tubing too, being joined to the manifold with bolted flanges. Placed in a position where strainer cleaning or replacement is easier, and less likely to be quickly plugged up by various marine life because of it's larger size. Similar deal with effluent pipes and header.

Worked on a 1932 built Black Douglas, most of the brass/bronze piping was that old & held up well. Anything we had "fixed" with Galvanized lasted about 6 - 9 months in warm Caribbean waters. I was Engineer so think all shut off cocks should be brass or bronze for Sophie's sake.

If you replace your engine through hull do not use Maerlon/plastic in the engine compartment. Europe does not allow Maerlon through hulls in the engine bay, because they found it melted easily in diesel engine fires and sank the boat. It might invalidate your insurance if you do install Maerlon. Buy a good bronze through hull. It is fairly good for just about anything else that won't suffer a potential impact from something heavy. Just an FYI for your viewers and a counter point for those that might get on you for putting in something bronze.

Love the video. So professionally made. Thank you, the only problem is the advertising, I really dont think it's good to have them popping up the the middle of your video, Beginning ok, end ok, but not in the middle. P.S. grate video, nice boat, good job,

I agree, it's a BIG p.i.a., but I don't think it's under they have a say in the matter. I'm sure it's RU-vid that controls where, what and when an advertisement pops up during a video. I understand RU-vid has to keep their advertisers happy and make money but they are ruining the video experience. At least they give us the opportunity to 'skip' the commercial after the first 4 or 5 seconds. I think I'm going to investigate other platforms to view RnS' videos.

Backup auto pilot is probably a good idea. My Raymarine autopilot seem to work about 90%of the time and for the life of me I can figure out why. I pretty much have a duplicate set of electronic parts from switching things out. Please update date us on how that works. Don’t really understand why you swapped out the thruhulls, as they looked pretty good to me. Best wishes with your crossing.
