Paul ( PG) is out salmon fishing with his friend Bobby Windsor, fondly known as "The Mars Bar Kid". Knowing that the water was low and that the Avon salmon run was still peaking they decided to visit the famous and historic "Royalty" on the Hampshire Avon in Christchurch, Dorset. PG's last salmon spinning day on the Royalty was more than 6 years ago having only fished it once on the fly during that period.( The day Paul Robinson caught a 29lber on rolling luncheon meat) On his first day back after 6 years of fishing the Somerley Estate, PG lands a fresh and bright cock fish in excess of 30 lb's.Just 2 hours into the session. He presents a mepps 5 (silver blade with blue spots) above the "Railway Pool" near "Greenbanks". Using his " Contour" roaming head cam he captures the anticipation, take, battle and landing of the fish all in under 10 minutes !!! Also includes under-water footage of the release and some stunning stills. Paul takes you into the "Rod Room" and "Davies Tackle" for a trip down memory lane which includes a cast of the 49ber that was caught on the fishery back in 1952. At the end of the film he throws in some wildlife shots taken at the fishery on the day. These include a little egret stalking small mullet below "The Falls".

Great video Paul, and what a magnificent fish. We met on the Royalty the other week when you fished through my swim on the Trammels. What next - it's about time somebody knocked Georgina Ballantyne off her perch after all these years!

Remembering the days of fishing with the late Bill Warren. Will never forget the help he gave us to catch the larger members of Barbell at The Royalty Fishery. Great days and good food by Mrs Warren.

Just incredible, Paul. This gave me goose bumps. I used to fish the Royalty extensively in the 80's and 90's and it is one of the most magical places on earth. You either let it in or you don't. If you do, the rewards are endless. Some days you would hardly see anyone and it was like we had the river to ourselves. So many large fish and so much wildlife to see. I can feel that enthusiasm running through you and it comes over so well. I have seen some very, very large fish in that river. Good luck!

Ironix1 thank you! It’s was a heavenly experience for me and one that I will cherish for many years to come. The Avon ha a chance of a fish of a lifetime covering every species and for me to take one in my first visit for 6 years was truly amazing. So glad I took the cameras and recorded the magic of the Avon. It does invoke memories for older rods who fished their many years ago. My goal is to take one in the 40 pound class on the fly, it’s possible as I have seen and lost several in that class. Wishing you a very happy Christmas and 2028.

The only reason you hardly see anyone and have the river to your self is that only the select few with big bucks are allowed to walk the banks, and show some respect to those lovely big rare pike don't see you drag a 20lb salmon through the mud, shame on you to treat a fish like that...
@ironix1
@ironix1 Год назад
@@nikgrimmett8736 I didn't have big bucks and my pals and I were not of a select few. I was lucky enough to catch some decent specimens, of many species, which I doubt are there now. I always treated all my fish with respect and still do.

How's things Paul love your content and just watching back over a few videos, is there a reason behind the fact you landed a 30pound fish within 5minutes, its just I have only had the pleasure of catching a 4 pound salmon but that fish alone took nearly 5 minutes to land?
@PaulGreenacre
@PaulGreenacre 11 лет назад
Hi Theo, enjoyed spending some time with you - the fish will come -- your fly action looks good and I am sure you will get better and better with plenty of practice. See you soon. Paul

Total disrespect for the pike, bet you wouldn't drag a 20lb salmon through the mud.

I remember about the time of the video I was walking along the river Spey and saw a man catch a salmon that was easily a 34lb but the guy wasn't even excited about it, he just netted it looked at it for a minute took a photo and put it back ??

Have you actually just landed that 31lb..? Slammer in under 10 mins...? What ever that's a fantastic loooking Fish ;-) Ps I am up for total catch n release throughout the whole of the UK..? as both our rivers (Mawddach/Wnion) hve almost lost the spring and summer Slammers for good :-(
@PaulGreenacre
@PaulGreenacre 10 лет назад
thanks Glyn - 4 mins of pure power - and safely in the net! 30lbers are rare on the avon - although we had 2 over 30 in 2013. This year has been tough - so catch and release is imperative. Hope one or two make their way back into your rivers!

I bet the 19 dislikes were from the militant 'fly fishing only brigade' ... Beautiful fish and caught with a skilful method. Plus you got it in quickly which really increases it's chance of a full recovery.. Well done indeed.

I personally think that fish weighed more no disrespect to the ghille but the net was resting on the reeds when weighing... Think couple of pounds went astray!!!

Nice fish and video...exciting.. very pleased for you... I like your weigh/landing net. Classic fish and river. I kept trying to tell the guy with the net to get downstream of you... he wasn't very efficient. You don't have to kill the fish there then?

what casting weight is your rod? just wondering if my set up would be adequate to cast a mepps 4 or 5
@PaulGreenacre
@PaulGreenacre 10 лет назад
my rod can take 50g weights - you need a 20-30g to take a mepps 4 or 5 but most importantly you need beef and power to play a large salmon - I have switched to the 10 foot diawa showgun twin power rod - it is the business - its light- easy to cast- upturned rings for more casting and easier playing - comfortable cork handle - retails at about £ 200 - and doubles as a carp or barbel stalking rod ! I love it!. It has a sensitive tip but power in the butt end of the blank!

Thanks for the advice, and what do you think of the wychwood truespin range?
@PaulGreenacre
@PaulGreenacre 10 лет назад
good starter spinning rod - for £ 70 - however not built as good as diawa spinning rods. If you make contact with a biggie you want power in the blank to control the fish - I am not sure the truespin range will be up for the job?
@Joegriffin100
@Joegriffin100 10 лет назад
Paul Greenacre you classify a biggie as a 30lb fish ;), id classify one as 10lb. id say the truespin will do the job for me, thanks.

Nice Sea Trout, Not a Salmon. I wish people would learn the difference between the two

Stop taking drugs,they are making people laugh at you.
@southerneruk
@southerneruk 5 лет назад
@@hedgehog3900 Only one taking drugs is your self, and being laught at. You need to learn the difference between a Salmon and Sea Trout, they might look the same and grow to the same sizes, but there tiny bits of difference between to the two, like you can't hold a salmon up by the tail, it will slip though, where as sea trout will not, The bones hypural and neural vertebra are a little bit larger on a Sea Trout, Aslo the Salmon is deep fork while sea trout is straight or a shallow noch fork. And Now you that tiny little bit wiser. All the rivers on the South Coast are well known Trout Rivers, there is only a very small number of Salmon that run up the rivers, Sea Trout, it use to be said for every 1 salmon there would be over 100 sea trout, and by the way the two fish can cross bred. whicj is the case of mose salmon cought on the south coast, If you want to see pure bred salmon then head up the east coast on the boarder.
@hedgehog3900
@hedgehog3900 5 лет назад
@@southerneruk And you don't think a 30lb-ish sea trout would have made headlines in the uk angling press? I have held lots of salmon by the tail,i was born and bred in the BORDERS. Unless Eden and Esk salmon are freaks i am afraid it is you who are mistaken.
@southerneruk
@southerneruk 5 лет назад
@@hedgehog3900 For some unknown reason Records of Sea Trout was never kept, but 50lb Sea Trout use to be no stranger on the South coast rivers, biggest one I ever caught was 43lb and I do know of bigger ones caught in the pass local to me, Even King Edward and George fish the area I live in because of the size of the Sea Trout when they stayed at Broadlands they fished what was called bottom pool and lower pool which was tidal pools that was salt water at high tide and brackish water at low tide, saddly these pools are no longer there, the container port and then the extention wipe them out, next time your out fishing take a picture of the tail end and start looking for the differences
@southerneruk
@southerneruk 5 лет назад
@@hedgehog3900 The northern rivers are perfect Salmon rivers, its the opposite to south coast rivers, south coast are perfect trout rivers, the spawning beds are different tempertures, the gravel is a different size to, where are rivers run slower over the spawning beds, there been major problems on my local river, first it was these inland fish pens the waste being wash into the rivers, then those so called experts that came out of college and Univerities thinking they know better and impleamenting there ideas, as nearly wipe out our local wild Sea Trout, like taking the gravel away to be cleaned and forgetting about the fry, blocking up side streams to push all the fish into one part of the river.
