I've found a fine fine refutation on youtube from white's point of view which is called the Adelaide Wahls variation uploaded by a Belgian who's called Bastiaan. Nevertheless this countergambit is a good way to get white out of his attacking style of play. I wonder why people don't try it more. Probably because of the small margin of error.

After 4. exf5 e4 5. Ne5 Nf6 6. Nc3 d6 7. Bb5 Qd6 8. d3 Bxf5 white has the simple 9. dxe4 when it looks like white just wins a pawn with a good position.

After 4. exf5 e4 5. Ne5 Nf6 white can choose 6. Be2 leading to razorsharp positions. Perhaps 6. - Bc5 or Ne4 are the best continuation but very little research has been done on this. Then 7. Bh5+ Kf8/e7 8. Nf7 Qe8! and it is pretty much complicated for White, just like in the Latvian countergambit.

Been playing these lines with good success refuting White's King's Gambit and ran across this recently. 1. e4, e5 2. f4, Nc6 3. Nf3, f5 4. exf5, e4 5. Ng5, Nf6 6. Be2, Bc5 (black needs to clear f8 for his King) Now if White gets greedy and tries... 7. Bh5+, Kf8 8. Nf7, Qe8 9. NxRh8, NxBh5 10. Nc3, Nf6 And I don't see a way White can save his N on h8, but play will be difficult on both sides.

At 6:37, white should play Ng5. Black is worse then. Many of these openings have good practical chances, so you will do well with them if you are playing weaker players, but for strong players, this is less likely to succeed.

Hello GJ you're amazing simply out standing I greatly admire and appreciate your work which helps a lot of people. I have a question at 6:39 what if the white plays Bishop to b5 then I suppose we cannot move the D pawn and I kind of feel it's out right attack by White.If a6 bishop captures the night after capturing the pawn with B pawn we cannot push the D pawn (night captures c6 pawn) but if we capture with D pawn I suppose E pawn is isolated. Please share your thoughts

hey GJ, at 10:50, how about if we would have done Nf2, instead of BE6. I guess we could have capture a Rook on it. Please tell me what's blunder on it.
@michaelploch894
@michaelploch894 7 лет назад
Nf2 is met with Re1+ where Black has no good options: Nf2 Re1+ Ne4 Nxe4 fxe4 Qxe4+ Nf2 Re1+ Kf8 Nb5 Qc5+ Bc4 Ne4 Nxc7 Nf2 Re1+ Be6 Nb5 (Bc4 0-0-0 Bxe6+ Kb8 Be3 works too) Qc5+ (...Qd7 Rxe6+ Qxe6 Nxc7+) Kb1 Ne4 Nxc7+

I have a question. I'm about 750 rating, so no pro. I played a guy who used the King's Gambit while he was using the white pieces, but he put his pawns on E4 and D4, with his knight on F3 (My knight was on C6, and my pawn was on E5). I was completely caught off guard. It ended up being a disaster when I declined the D4 pawn, and he simply pushed it forward. Such a seemingly simple move, but I was completely caught off guard. Any suggestions on how to defend this slight variation of the King's Gambit?

Dear GJ, could you please give any clues on how to win for white in the old Damiano gambit 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 f6 3. Nxe5 f6xe5. Of course 2. ... f6 is a blunder, but still I couldn't win for white anyways when playing with a 2000+ friend of mine

Let me preface this by thanking you for making the video and to assure you that I mean no criticism. You're the first chess player that I've heard pronounce the x (as in exf5) as "cross". Is this a common way to express a capture where you live/play?

10:48 Why not play Nf2 which would fork white's two rocks.
@anikan268
@anikan268 10 лет назад
Hey GJ. I was wondering. At 12:21 instead of playing Bc5, can't Black also go Qh5+ and after white responds with g3 then we can simply take the pawn on g3 with the Knight and white cannot take back because Black will win a rook. And if white decides to block with Bishop to f2 then we simply just capture the pawn on f4 with the Queen threatening Qc1+ putting white in a very difficult situation while Black still has the option of going Bc5 as you suggested giving Black control of the center and restricting white from any offense because it will have to worry about protecting its King. And if white simply moves the King out of harms way then white loses the ability to castle. This is just something I noticed. Have you analyzed this. If so what are its flaws because I really don't see any, it seems as if Black will just have a really good attack on the white king forcing white to play defensively.
