Atturo Trailblade XT review vs Cooper AT3 vs BFG Rugged Terrain

After a bit with these tires, I felt like I should do an overview about my thoughts.
End story?
Atturo Trail Blade XT have served me well so far and noticed increased grip in situations i didn't have with the AT3
Cooper AT/3 has let me down a few times, but performed decently
BFG Rugged Terrains are a fine stock replacement that look cool but don't do all that much

BF GOODRICH RUGGED TERRAIN I would put as an awesome tire for the money. I have them on my 2003 Chevy 1500 4x4 extended cab. Tires have around 80,000 on them and still show little wear. Snow,Ice,dirt roads, gravel roads, 2 tracks, even Orv trails with sand seem to grip well.I never hardcore off road it but been through couple mud holes with ease that I questioned if I would get stuck. I hunt and fish and love exploring new hunting areas all the time. I do over 100 miles a day on these tires on the highway and passed the truck to my son a year ago for his first ride and I look at the tires daily and still looking good. Probably good for most daily drivers.

Hey man, just bought a set of rugged terrain tires for my 2wd Silverado. Good in the snow??? I’m upgrading from the Fusion SUV all season tire.

Great review Grant. I appreciate the honest, non-bias review of all three tires.

You're right about the cooper at3. I had them on my old nissan frontier. Them tires had bad traction on wet roads. I got slight hydroplaned several times when I turned the light. Overall, they're good tires tho.

That’s crazy I’ve had nothing but good luck with AT3s on my 2500 tow rig. Great traction and long life. Went through 6 bf Goodrich ATs and MTs in a year and a half. Thanks for the review of Atturos I just ordered a set for my half ton, hopefully they’ll hold up

Alot more weight with your rig which helps. All depends on what you drive

I recently bought a lifted 2016 GMC Sierra 2500 HD that had Atturo Trail Blade XTs (35 X 12.50R20). They are definitely "bad ass" looking on my chrome 20 X 10 Triton Fuel wheels. Unfortunately, I purchased my truck to tow a 10,000 lb. 5th wheel and these Atturos are NOT adequately rated for towing an RV. They only have a Load Index of 121 @ a maximum tire pressure of 65psi. If you're considering to purchase a set of Atturos for the street and/or off-roading, you should be fine. However, don't buy them if you plan to tow anything. My Atturos only had about 10,000 miles on them, but, I had to replace them with a set of Toyo Open Country AT3's to achieve the Load Index that my truck and RV required. Based on my experience, they are quite noisy. Good luck!

I have been using the BFG rugged terrain as a budget alternative to the KO2 and have taken it really rough places in my 4Runner. Aired down to 25psi it will hold its own on any terrain. I am not a rock crawler but I have had to pound through really rocky terrain and come out with just some chipping of the tread in places. I would recommend this tire to the budding off roader while you get your wings on the trails. The dismissal of this tire in this video is unwarranted IMO.

I have Coopers AT3 LT I took them to the snow and I was sliding everywhere. I took them to the rain and mud and they performed pretty good. I wonder how much better bf Goodrich are.
@Dake21

I've had the cooper AT3 for about 2 years, same size as yours on a vehicle quite similar to yours. Personally I find the wet traction on pavement is amazing. On dirt road it was very good. On snow it was ok, but I prefer to run dedicated winter tire rather than a jack of all trade. On wet mud (maritimes, Canada) foward and rearward traction is good but lateral traction is not, I would easily slide side to side and struggle to keep a straight path. I think they self clean ok. Like you mentioned the lack of sidewalls is not reassuring. The worst is on ice. I've made the mistake of running them for a full coastal winter (the kind that always have ice everywhere) and it felt like I had skates. On the noise level I found them good at first but as they wear out they become very noisy. Thread-wear was disappointing, I barely did 50,000KM (31,000 miles) with them and they are at 5/32. If it wasn't from the bad thread-wear I would consider them again, but now I am thinking to get the Grabbers AT2 or the so called standard of the A/T tires, the Goodrich TKO2.

+1 on wet traction. Mine are getting to end of life with about 50k on them and they are still pretty quiet and still handle well. 265/70-17.

I have KO2s and they suck big time on mud or wet roads. On any wet surface if you hard break they slide more than in winter because the ABS keeps detecting their micro aqua-plannings. Also on Mud they don't clear up well and they tend to slip in the worse possible moment. For anything else they are great...
@jaredpittman3152
@jaredpittman3152 7 лет назад
I strongly disagree with you on the KO2's. I have no problems on personal or oilfield vehicles. I have 45k miles on my current set on a 2500hd, ran hard in the oilfield, rain, snow, ice, mud, caliche rocks. Zero issues. Have them on a Grand Cherokee, and that thing is like a mountain goat in the snow. Perhaps its your vehicle or driving competence that needs work.

Another cheaper version of the trail blade is the thunderer ranger. There more street then mud tires but there decent. 90$ a tire. Thunderer also makes a mud track tire that's really aggressive

Hi Grant, Love your stuff. Your OB is lust-worthy. I'm in need of some new tires (finally!) and looking to go more aggressive than the OEMs. Considering the Atturo's thanks to you, Maxxis Bravo AT-771's thanks to Wes Siler, and BFG KO2's because the handful of people I know who have them, love them. Would you say that the Maxxis is more in the Rugged Terrain category vs the Atturos?

It sounds like you have nothing bad to say about the BFG Rugged Terrain t/a if the consumer doesn’t tow and usually drives 95% highway and 5% flat dirt pebble roads. Would you say these are exactly what I need?

Are you suppose to run trailer tires on your teardrop?
@nightfury1318
@nightfury1318 4 года назад
It's most likely illegal to run them on the trailer. In my state they will ticket you and hold the trailer till you go get the correct tires. Now I'm sure those tires are more then enough to handle that trailer. I understand using the same rims and tires for truck and trailer so you can use the same spare for either.

Hi Grant. I just snagged a 2011 Outback Ltd. 2" ADF lift and all three plates from Primitive are already ordered. This video just let me make the call between the Atturos and Kumho Road Ventures. Atturos it is. 235/65/17 on 17x7.5 Sparco Terra's. I have looked all over for the winch setup you have.... and have had no luck. Any help / info you could provide would. E greatly appreciated !!! Hi Grant. I'm looking at going to bigger tires for my 2015 Outback. I have looked at just about everything you have on terms of videos and your content at offroadsubaru.com (great stuff BTW) I see that you have run 245/65-17 and 235/65-17. I'm leaning towards the 235s, but I thought I'd ask you if you have a preference after trying both sizes. Thanks and keep up the great content.

Hey smarty guy - your Atturos and KO2s are crap on any emergency breaking on wet asphalt, the ABS will even make them worse, you can't stop at city speeds, let's say if a child jumps somewhere infront... so before you recommend tires do have the balls to do a hard break on wet asphalt, not all of us live only in woods. It's not the tire brand - it's the design pattern.
@Cainori
@Cainori 7 лет назад
Well you were right, the new AT3 sport thread split for about 30cm, on and off, in 1000km on one of the frontal tires in a slide on water on the mall parking. The rubber is too soft and it will break away if you put all the car in one tilted tire
