Retracing the steps of renowned Auckland photographer, Henry Winkelmann (1860-1931), I retook photos of the same buildings, from the same angle, within their new surroundings.
Original photos are from the Auckland Libraries Heritage Collections 1-W0000

Winkleman is a legend......... Thank god he had the access to plates and shot everything that he did -- as mundane as it probably was at the time its so significant now. His shots from the top of college hill looking back to the city are remarkable as well.

Are there any construction photos or building plans for these ornate old buildings with huge high ceilings doors and window's? Have never seen any. I also notice the bottom row of windows are often half underground.

This so well summarizes the essential character of Auckland - what was once ornate and beautiful _technically_ remains so owing to the fact that most of it is still there, but it’s dominated by menacing, badly planned and ugly postmodern glass + steel behemoths . . .

@@danieleyre8913 Most of the historical buildings have been preserved. The city needed to expand. I imagine you're from a dump like Wellington or Christchurch..
@danieleyre8913
@danieleyre8913 Год назад
@@luminisant You make me laugh. If Wellington’s a dump then that would make Auckland a sink hole given that despite it’s much smaller size; Wellington is clearly more urbane and cosmopolitan (not that it is very much by world standards). You probably know that deep down and have a chip on your shoulder about it given how you defensively brought Wellington up out of the blue. Auckland is covered in ugly and depressing either featureless or eyesore buildings from the 70s-90s. Anyone can look at photos of Auckland from the 60s and earlier to see the attractive Edwardian and early 20th century buildings that were lost, and that you are talking from your arsehole with the claim that “most were preserved”. And no actually the central city didn’t expand, not even to Kairangahape road, which is why it kinda sucks.
