►Our motorsport engineer, Cory, is here to show you how to fix one of the most infamous cooling system failures on the B8/B8.5 platform, and that is the thermostat and water pump.
Most notably, the older B8's are known for their leaky water pumps. In fact, Audi even has a "weep hole" in the water pump designed to let you know when it is time to change out the old one to prevent bearing failure. So if you are experiencing coolant loss or your engine thermostat is not operating correctly, it might be time to change out both items at once.
Since you have to remove the supercharger belt and accessory belt, Cory will also show you how to correctly install the new belts.
This DIY will be useful for any Audi with the 3.0T engine, although there may be some small discrepancies, the core of the process will remain the same.

Thanks for the video. I just finished this job up last night. I had the added complication of having to replace the front crossover coolant pipe as I learned that it was cracked where it inserts into the thermostat. Unfortunately, I did not notice this the first time and discovered the crack upon a leak test, so I had to take off the supercharger, belts, pulley, etc, a second time! So watch out for this - check that crossover coolant pipe carefully. Removing and replacing the coolant pipe added quite a bit more pain to the job. For anyone wondering, while I saw one video of someone replacing the T-stat without putting the front-end into service position, I would not have been able to do it without the extra room. I highly advise service position for access to the 4 T30's holding the crossover coolant pipe to the heads, for access to the water pump and just easier manipulation of the belts, etc. I used the coolant filler vacuum tool to leak test and refill the coolant and highly recommend that. I did the leak test before connecting all the vacuum and electrical back on to the supercharger, but be careful as they note when putting the supercharger back on because I trapped my purge line underneath. I was afraid I was going to have to pull the supercharger up yet again after I had filled the system with coolant, but luckily just loosening it a bit, I was able to wriggle the purge line free. And definitely label all those connections at the back of the supercharger. I had mine apart for 4 days waiting for the coolant pipe to arrive and if I didn't label them remembering it all would have been challenging. If you are not experienced at DIY, work with a friend - you will be surprised how much more motivation a second person provides to work through a sticky problem - not too mention extra hands for some of the operations.

Want to thank you for the video. Just finishing it up... everything is in and I just need to fill coolant and start. For anyone doing this on a vehicle with a bunch of miles, i'll share that my 2013 Q5 has 93k miles on it and the inside of the coolant pipe was totally decaying. I could dig out what used to be plastic using my fingernail. The part is available at FCP, but when I bought it, the listed part at FCP was not the right one. I called FCP to notify them, but just in case.... you want part 06E121045BB. It fits perfectly. And it comes with the 3 gaskets needed (2 for attaching to block and one at the thermostat) so you don't have to buy them like I did. The supercharger is heavy! Hope you have a good back. My Q5 has a different front bumper system than the video. No bolt behind the wheel well longer holding on the bumper... just pull it out. So many bolts under the hood though... I used lots of tape to mark locations, with sharpie to write a number and a matching number tagged on each bolt. Not a bad job. I used a huge Phillips screwdriver to remove the supercharger coolant bleed screws, and that worked well. They look like a flathead will work, but it didn't. Thanks again... awesome video. FCP rocks!

Audi ( Volkswagen GmbH) engineers certainly fulfilled their brief from management to ensure the complexity of the engine bay layout would deter any customers from attempting DIY work so they would take their car back to dealer for all maintenance and repair! This is a high calibre, very advanced tutorial, for those brave enough to attempt it !

Thanks for this DIY. I followed it and was able to change out my thermostat. Hardest parts were taking off any of the coolant hose as they were all stuck on pretty tight, and removing and reattaching all the various cables and tubes from the supercharger. Otherwise it just took a fair amount of time, but save me a lot of $$$$
@polocoste
@polocoste 2 года назад
Just want to give an update on my thermostat change. I noticed some leaking after, but for the life of me could not figure out where it was coming from. After taking off the supercharger again I determined it was coming from where the thermostat meets the coolant pipe. Swapped the o-ring twice because I figured that was the problem, but the leak persisted. Finally I changed the entire coolant pipe and the issue was resolved. I looked at the old coolant pipe and could see no cracks, so the only thing I can think is that it either slightly warped over time, or shrank in diameter. Not really sure, but just wanted to mention this in case anyone else has a similar issue.

My mechanic is recommending I change my upper and lower radiator hoses, coolant hose as well, and a couple belts. Sad thing is my PCV valve was changed at 60k miles and Audi didn't recommend changing the water pump or thermostat. Only the Supercharger and drive belt. Wish you guys were my mechanics! This job looks brutal. I did a DIY turbo replacement on my son's B7 A4 2.0T and this looks harder than that job! Our 2010 B8 S4 currently has this issue and $2000+ being quoted by an indy shop, though I am trying to clarify if its just the water pump as I read that you can do just the water pump without removing the SC. But I guess I need to bite the bullet as many jobs will require SC removal - might as well learn how to do it now. But I am not looking forward to this job!, mostly because I hate cooling system work. I know you recommend bleeding, but you also said the car does a good job of self-bleeding - do I really have to crack the bleeder screws? EDIT- see my new comment - I completed the job last night with some observations.

Hi Donald, if you are servicing the thermostat you will most definitely need to drain the coolant system as Cory does in the video, and then refill and bleed the system. You can always measure the amount drained to have a rough idea of how much the system may take again during fill up.

Did you ever figure it out I’m about to do this job plus the Pcv

@@confetty5151 yea, it was the solenoid that went to the waterpump vacuum line.

Great video, I think this has been asked a few times 😅 but can you easily do the pump with the supercharger still in place ? Cheers
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 2 года назад
You may be able to squeeze in there, but of course we recommend removing it for ease!

Yes. Have to squeeze it out but posible to change water pump without removing supercharger or setting car in service mode.

Did this a few months back with the supercharger in place and car in service mode and it worked well 👍, thanks for the tutorial

Hi Corey! Great video! I have a question, I have a b8.5 S5 and it currently has a wobbly coolant pump pulley. Is this safe or should I replace the coolant pump and pulley to get rid of the wobble. Kinda stuck and need some help
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 26 дней назад
You should replace that as soon as possible! The last thing you want is that pulley to come off and damage everything in the surrounding area, but also cause your engine to overheat.
@lunchmoney3652
@lunchmoney3652 26 дней назад
@@fcpeuro do you think the pulley belt might be the culprit? Maybe getting a tighter one?
@oNotoriety

Is this doable without getting under the car/service position?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 3 года назад
It's possible, Justin! But you'll need some special short sockets and some very very small hands.

If you were doing the waterpump, thermostat, pcv and carbon cleaning in what order makes the most sense to complete ?
@jonathanmaccormack4743
@jonathanmaccormack4743 3 года назад
Not sure if you already did the work on your car but I just finished the same list. I did the carbon cleaning first. It can be messy and I wanted to remove the pcv, pump, and thermostat after cleaning up. I also replaced the belts and spark plugs because I had the plugs out to make turning the engine easier.

My cousin's entire "valley' was flooded with coolant. The coolant pipe from the thermostat housing to the rear of the block was cracked on my his S5 cabriolet. Changed hoses, water pump, coolant pipe under SC, pcv valve, thermostat, crossover pipe, an idler and tensioner pulley, and belts. What a ridiculous design.
