Here's the Audi RS3, a lovely little 4 door pocket rocket that makes 400 horsepower out of a turbocharged 2.5 liter inline-5. Sounds like a great option for a daily driven compact sports sedan. Let's see where it stacks up on the Fast List with our 1/2 mile and 60-130 acceleration test.
Track Day is a channel dedicated to producing unique cinematic content and in-depth reviews on performance cars. We love cool cars. We love driving fast. And we're all about the half mile and 60-130.

As someone who went from an M235i to an RS3 I find a lot of the comments interesting, especially the BMW ones. For anyone who hasn't driven the RS3 and is relying on internet comments for their opinion, you have to note the difference between the pre-facelift and current versions. Audi took significant weight out from the front end and did some major tuning to the AWD algorithms starting with 2018 models. That makes a huge difference. There was a reported nose heavy feel and lack of dynamic engagement prior to 2018 that is complete remedied. The typical Audi understeer is replaced by a slight oversteer tendency that makes the car a blast to drive, not just in a straight line. Since I prefer cars that look like sleepers (Guilia excepted) I love the look of the RS3. As far as interiors go, this is unquestionably nicer than the M235i (I do have the virtual cockpit). Materials are nicer. Real leather instead of "leatherette". Most importantly, the driver's seat is straight instead of cocked in on an angle to meet crash standards.

+1 I have a 2018 A4.. A4! not S4, RS 4, or any of that for the weekend and it has been a blast to drive compared to my parents 2013 A6. The front end difference is way bigger.

To play devils advocate, the options you can check off to remove make sense coat wise. For example: No rear airbags, no digital dash, fixed vs adjustable shocks. Those 3 available ‘delete’ options would make this a perfect platform for someone looking to go the edge of its performance distance. You would be able to retain rear seats, a/c, still out on the town, and daily it the next morning. It would be the lightest version of a RS3, and the platform to pick, if you want to be a half mile killer.

I’m not as big of a fan of the RS3 as I am the TTRS, simply because one is better on the track than in a straight line It is most definitely one of the cheapest sports cars on the market for how fast is it, and it has the 5 cylinder The RS3 is a drag monster. Due to its weight, it isn’t as good as its TTRS competitor when it comes to all around performance, but it still performs very well for what it is It’s cool how you’re able to hear all the air being directed around the RS3 being it doesn’t have the best aerodynamics. The TTRS is very quiet in regards to air drag until 120+ mph, which is quite impressive Honestly Dan, these numbers seem a little abnormal, not too crazy. The car is almost 3,600 lbs, while the TTRS is in the 3,200s. Maybe it is fuel, but can’t be sure unless we test again. I’m concerned as to why the fuel is so sensitive for that car. I’ll have to have a chat with unitronic about that issue. Anyways, sweet video. What sucks is the TTRS seats are too short for me, but the RS3 seats fit my tall upper torso. Might need to swap the RS3 seat in, eventually. Personally I’d never see myself in an RS3, it’s just too unpractical for me. And practicality for me is big, plus my definition of practical is different than most, so I’m not surprised this isn’t my cup of tea
@DanWangFilms
@DanWangFilms 4 года назад
I thought I’d like the RS3 because of it’s four door situation. And I do, but it doesn’t excite me in anyway. But anyway, I still think it’s the fuel. I have another video of the RS3 vs TTRS coming up soon. They both run 93 octane, so we’ll see a same day showdown in that regard.

Well, in Germany you get 98 Octane Fuel everywhere. If you try it with a 100 Octane this goes fast as hell. As for the 0-60 time: I think that's because it doesn't fully rev the first and second gear anyway so fuel wasn't that much of an issue. But yeah, you realize that it can go to 7500-8000 Revs with the right fuel. What you could mention are the really slow downshifts.

@grownsimba8120
@grownsimba8120 4 года назад
All Audi's do have understeer which means you can't attack the corners like you would in a normally balanced car when it comes to angles. The driver has to compensate for that. It's certainly not ideal, but it doesn't make any performance Audi less trackable once the driver understands that and can launch out of a corner and going into one.
@NBASFAN
@NBASFAN 4 года назад
@@grownsimba8120 +1 this guy knows what his talking about, you can't drive an AWD into the corner like a RWD car I think people that tracks the car knows that at least. Also not all Audi understeer, the R8 certainly don't and I driven that around the track its basically a mini Huracan.
@grownsimba8120

@@NBASFAN I was almost certain that all Audis under-steered including the R8. The only caveat with the understeering R8 was that it was geared to safety but you can easily flick it into oversteer. I’m currently torn between two cars Audi RS3, or Audi S5 Sportback, do i want the 5 cyl that bad minus the lacking interior? Or settle for a same old 3.0 V6 turbo with REALLY nice interior and still decently quick. The dilemma is very real 💀 i might just settle on the RS3 due to it’s rarity/exclusivity/and FUN aspect. Or settle for something a little more subtle and resale value that will continue to tank. I am CERTAIN the RS3 will hold it’s value very well over the next 10 years.

why does that dash look old, is this before the Face lift? Regarding something is not right here comment. Those numbers look in line or actually better for stock. 12.0 at 112mp seems to be the norm for stock, sure there can be hero runs that are better but these cars shine with tunes and really good weather, which is the reason some people talks highly of them.
@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy 4 года назад
@MOD-IT This is a 2019 model but I’m not too familiar with the facelift so can’t confirm regarding the dash. I just know the owner didn’t option for the virtual cockpit. The ¼ mile looked okay actually if you think about all things considered and so did the 0-60. But everything else was off, especially when you compare it to cars of similar nature and compare it to magazine times. Keep in mind that every test we do is DA corrected for “good weather” which is a sea level DA. Of course people can run these cars (and any force induced car) in sub-sea level DA (“really good weather”) during boost season and get phenomenal times as well.
@MODIT

@@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy Thank you for your response and info regarding which year rs3 this was. That's so odd regarding the virtual cockpit, here in the USA we started receiving 2017 models first and still to this today they only come with virtual cockpits. I've owned a 2017 prior and now currently a 2019 rs3. Regarding performance, these performance numbers you shared especially 1/4 mph times really do seems accurate, not sure why you are mentioned they seem off? My 19 rs3 stock with a DA of 601 & temp of 61 degrees best ran a 12.03 @114.61mph with a 3.8 sec 0-60 and 12.55 sec 60-130 which falls in line with your 19 RS3 you tested. From my own testing compared to other performance cars the RS3 seems to require a higher correction factory when it comes to worse weather conditions, something like .13 for every 1000DA. Curious what your actual weather conditions were that day, might tell more of story regarding this rs3's performance though again it looks normal to me. IMO they really are a little doggy stock, they are craving a tune and good fuel. You can knock off 2-3 seconds for the 60-130 just with a stage 1 tune flash. Anyway keep up the great videos, enjoy them always!

@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy 4 года назад
@MOD-IT Thanks for the clarification and additional info. I think the main reason for thinking that the numbers are off is that we also tested the TTRS on the same day and as well as on a separate day, and did some datalogging. It ended up pulling timing on the factory tune on two different tanks of 93. It ended up running very similar times to the RS3. So we tried again with a little bit of E85 to mix it up to E20 and we ran finally times that made sense (see Fast List or stock TTRS episode). That’s where I drew my conclusion that fuel was a big factor on these engines. The recorded DA during the run was 1600 but as you probably know, I correct them down to sea level with a generic factor. If I remember correctly it ran 12.12 @ 112.58 uncorrected in those conditions. The uncorrected 60-130 was in the low 13s and that’s frankly a bit off. Anyway, thanks! I’m hoping to try this RS3 again with a little mix of 100 octane to see if my hypothesis holds true.

@@grownsimba8120 I never said it was incapable. However at that price point if you are looking for a car which you plan to spend more than a couple days a year at the track it is not the best choice simply because it carriers the bulk of it's weight over the front axle. Any engineer will tell you that is not the ideal weight distribution to achieve the best handling dynamics. In fact I do believe most would agree a slight rear weight biased car is best. Just wish they put this engine in the Golf body with some fender flares and wide tires. That would have been sweet. The A3 body is just a little meh, as is the TT. You need to get into a modern 911. If I were closer to NJ you could drive my nicely optioned Carrera T.

Too bad that car understeers a bit much. Nose heavy. Great engine, comfy interior (and probably grey or black like a typical Hugo Boss suit) but so so handling due to front axle engine mounting and smaller wheelbase. (Like every VW and Audi except for the mid engine Audi R8)As a daily the wheelbase is too short and the driver would feel the bumps and imperfections. Probably s4 would be a better daily driving to and from work. But maybe because I’m older than 40. I guess if bmw ever builds a m2 gran Coupé that probably is the right “competition” for this considering wheelbase and target demographic?

Where does one find 95 octane? Is that available any part of country?
@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy 4 года назад
No but people will often mix E85 in with 93 to get it up to E20 which most modern cars can handle now on an occasional basis. The safer (and more expensive route) is to find a Sunoco that has 100 octane at the pump and do a 70/30 or 80/20 mix to achieve 95.

Guys, C'mon...performance cars at the RS or M level are now evaluated whether they come with digital cockpit or not? Hahaha that's BS. I have two Audis, One RS7 and an A3. The A3 is my daily friendly ride, where I care about practically and some confort, the RS7 is my therapist, where I can hunt supercars, drive with pleasure or go on a trackday and feel that gforce... my RS7 is the generation before the existing one so it has a digital-ish cockpit with GPS and all the BS. I never cared about these things, I care about the fact I can do 0-60 faster than you- probably..c'mon, let's be less Nutela folks.
