When jumping into cars with different layouts either column shift or between Euro and JDM wiper and indicator stalks you realise how tricky it is to change your driving style and how amazing a person like Jay Leno is for having and regularly driving his cars as early as the 1910s and others especially the ones with centre throttles.

Excellent video. So nice to see Matt with his encyclopaedic knowledge and you two bouncing off each other. Also very funny to watch you discovering what a quarter light is and how to open it. Fantastic car and beautiful with the picnic in front of the Victorian folly. Was anyone else screaming at the screen for you to turn the ignition off before the coil overheats or the points burn? I trust the previous life "scars" you mentioned were the NS bonnet shut gap, the larger gap between the NS indicator and bumper compared with the OS one and I think the NS headlamp was angled slightly different vto the OS one. Is it a "3 on the tree" gearchange or did it have a 4 speed box? 1965 was the year when front seat belt mountings became compulsory, though having belts wwas still the owners option. Very nice review.

This is the great grandad of the cars that are permanently positioned about 6 inches of your rear bumper on a motorway or faster road... I think seat belts in the front were legally required to be fitted to vehicles sold in the UK from 1963. Wearing them didn't become compulsory until the early '80s, but they had to be fitted... I believe the other surviving right-hand drive 80 estate is in Australia. There are still some left-hand drive early Audis around in Europe, but not many. As someone else said, they were reliable cars, and it's been a while since anyone could say that about an Audi, so they tended to get driven into the ground and then a bit further. Audis were very unusual cars in the UK until about the mid '70s when they started to become a bit more popular. It wasn't really until the aerodynamic 100 was launched in the early '80s that they really started to become a sizeable player in the executive car class, and the rest is history. It's a shame Audis stopped being engineer-led vehicles and became just jazzed up VWs with ridiculous price tags as the older cars were easily the equal of Mercedes-Benz and BMW on quality...

Almost 30 years before i had a chance to drive an Audi like that one but saloon (Audi 100 C1) for a few hundred kilometers, my friend borrowed me that car....everything that i can say is that car was a gift from heaven. I can remember that by today's standards that car was slow off course, but also by today's crappy standards it was extremely well built, visibility was great off course with so much glass, interior was full of a hard plastic, but not cheap plastic, and it was so smooth.....a dream car. Ashtrays everywhere :-) :-) Best seats ever without any doubt (off course without a stupid headrests life is always much better). You couldn't feel any pothole, that's impossible. That Audi was better than my personal Audi today which is 40 years younger. I would like to have that same car but....unfortunatelly never..... probably. ...or the demister fan control. When I was a lad I worked at my uncle's garage in my spare time, serving petrol and cleaning cars. We had a sub-dealership for Ford and Auto-Union. You spoke of the colour. British cars were black, white, red or blue almost in regulation shades. DKW/Auto-Union cars were every bright hue other than these, so you'd find your steed in a car park in seconds! The 2-stroke cars were simply amazing for their time, but the messy mixing of oil and fuel at every refill put most potential buyers off. There was also the really smelly clouds of white smoke that tended to hang around the car, a smell that you'd also carry in your clothes. Okay if you were a petrolhead, but that word didn't exist back then. That's more than likely the cause of few if any 2-stroke engines being in modern cars, although they were quick and economical.

I really enjoy your videos but you need to do something about your knowledge of post war history, especially in relation to Germany: It was understood that the imposition of post WW1 reparations by the allies and it subsequent oppression of the Country and its occupants had at least in part, led to the rise of Nazi-ism and therefore, after WW2, every effort was made to rebuild West Germany on a more democratic, egalitarian and wealthy basis than before. By the 60s (I was born in 62) West Germany was already far wealthier than the UK, which was paying back the USA the cost of purchasing through Lease-Lend, until the early 2000s (and we still haven't finished paying the USA for WW1) and spending huge amounts of money on Defence and developing nuclear technology whilst losing its Empirical cash cow and declining industrially to the point at which now, we effectively manufacture nothing except cups of coffee and as the West Germans were forced to spend nothing militarily excepting on their own army in a defence role (all of which is similar to Japan's post war growth), the Deutsch Mark was in a far healthier state than Sterling. There were also materials shortages in the UK, which went on until the early 80s, which explains why early post WW2, Land Rovers bodies were manufactured using Birmabright, not mild steel and why the stainless steel used in the production of things like washing machines, tumble dryers and microwave cookers wasn't available (unless imported at enormous expense due to import duties, from the USA), due to the fact that most stainless steel production in the UK went to building nuclear processing plants, submarines, power plants etc. Due to the disparity in the value of the Mark against the Pound, even the humble VW Beetle was an expensive car and as the sixties wore on, Companies like BMW & Mercedes Benz realised that the American market would purchase their products, which even before WW2, had a reputation for good quality and they never at that time, aimed there goods specifically at the UK market, because nobody could afford them. To put this into a weird context, and by way of illustrating how poor the UK was, you have to take into account that most houses in the UK did not have central heating until the late 1970s and houses were still being built without heating up until the late 1980s (you'll get nay sayers on this point but they will likely be from the South of the Country - I grew up in Watford and we had our first heating system installed in a house which was already around 7 years old, in about 1966, long before our neighbours had it installed and when we eventually moved to a wealthy area of the Midlands in 1976, most people still hadn't had it installed in Watford and the Midlands was positively Mediaeval). When we lived in Watford, there was a business at the end of our road and one of the owners, owned an Audi similar to that shwn in your video, I was obsessed with cars and remember speaking to my Dad about it, who was tight but not short of a few bob and he grumbled that they were very expensive, which is ironic given that we had an Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT and either a Ford Zodiac with an Essex V6 or something like a FIAT 128, plus an old Riley secreted away in a seperate garage over the road, in the days when nobody owned two cars. In conclusion; be under no illusion that by the early 60s, West Germany was on its knees. I was born 17 years after the end of WW2 and by that time they were much better off that the UK. Watch films like Funeral in Berlin with Michael Caine and you'll get a feel for what West Berlin was like from the footage taken there and be aware that the rest of West Germany was doing much better, if that's even possible.
