1994 C4 S6 2.2T - amazing sound of R5 engine 1997 C4 S6+ 4.2i - legendary V8 engine shared with S8, low-run production, collectable today 1999 C5 S6 4.2i - combined with manual gear box; it's killing sleeper machine, still remember that full muscle V8 sound 2006 C6 S6 - golden years of Audi, V10 5.2FSI shared with Lamborghini Gallardo and S8 450HP! 2012 C7 S6 - 4.0bT ok a bit downsized, but actually very light engine in way more lighter car, migh be the most beautiful and fastest S6 though, engine shared again with S8 and 2019? FUC*IN diesel with fake sound? with fake exhaust ?? Audi You did ruin 20+years of building the Icon, for what? You had SLine badge for tthose who can't afford the S!

This car is actually really good. My dad bought it last month and we like it a lot. It sounds pretty nice from the outside too and the launch gets your adrenaline pumping. Although I do agree the 4 fake exhaust are a bit pathetic but it looks good at least.

I just don't know what Audi were doing in making their S cars diesels. And having that fake V8 petrol engine sound in the cabin is totally bonkers.

The last S6/S7 with the 4.0tfsi V8 did it in 4.4 seconds. And in the US etc the new S6 and S7 have the RS4/RS5 engine with a 2.9TFSI V6 and they do 0-60 in 4.0 secs with real exhausts and real sound!

Great honest review ! I feel you, my friend has a 2 year old A6 V6 diesel 320 ps + chip tuning. Also fake sound, turbo lag, not so sporty to ride.

3.0 TDI (350PS) to normal A6. 4.0 TDI (435PS) from SQ7/SQ8 to S6/S7. However, I think that Audi S6/S7 should have 4.0 TFSI (460PS) from Porsche Panamera GTS.

Why is Audi making all the S cars diesel? Hardly a sporty engine choice

So, it was 450hp V8 with 4,4 to 100km/h and now it’s 350hp diesel with 5 second? Lol 😂 It should be regular top version of A6 for fuel economy and some mediocre performance. Not the S badged definitely. This car is totally opposite to the Sport.

Thank you! I was seriously considering this as a replacement for my 535d Touring BUT those fake exhausts and the FAKE cabin noise are unforgivable, crass and I would be embarrassed to be seen in this car

my 2002 s6 was made with wide body ,aluminium wings and bonnet ,black alcantara headlining ,recaro seats, full carbon fibre trim ,solar powered sunroof,and crucially a 340 hp v8 which is a blast to drive and sounds great,a completely different car to a standard a6 ,it feels special .this new s6 does not have that "special" feel to it, and worst of all a diesel with only 6 cylinders -- nonsense.

This generation S6/S7 is one of the biggest failures in Audi's history.

There actually is a explaination to the fake exhaust pipes. The head of design, Marc Lichte, met up with a swedish motor journalist (925 Motor) and said that he was given the task to design the new S6 and S7. It was supposed to be a V6/V8 petrol so Lichte designed it to be a petrol car which explains the four exhaust pipes. However, the engineers of Audi decided that it was going to be a diesel for the european market instead of a petrol version. Lichte was already done with the design when this happened and the design of the car was in "design stop" which means that you can't change the design after that. The car was in the hands of the engineers by then who tried having 2 real exhausts and 2 fake. However, when testing the car in winter conditions, half of it got covered in snow and the other half didn't because of the heat from the exhaust. The engineers then had the thought of having 4 real exhaust but that wasn't psyically possible since the Adblue tank was in the way for the other 2 exhaust pipes. A drag race between this and the Audi A6 55 TFSI quattro would be really interesting. The 55 TFSI has 340hp and does 0-100 km/h in 5,3 seconds, so the specs of both the cars are really similar.

I still don't understand why they put Fake exhaust pipes, especially on S model. is Audi just trying to save a few bucks or does it have to do with regulation?

I could understand if they did a revised 4.2 TDI version to power this new S6 but this is a woeful car, what's next a 2.0 TFSI RS6 ????

I'm an Audi fanboy but damn those fake exhausts... Look I understand why they went with a diesel, as it's more efficient and a better cruiser but it's just too expensive and not worth the price

Mat, why no proper verdict? A clear „Avoid“ it!

So Audi had 3 engine choices for the s6, without developing anything new: the 2.9 litre twin turbo V6 (petrol) from the Rs4 and the Rs5, which they will use outside Europe; the Diesel V8 4.0 TDi, Tri-Turbo that they currently use in the Audi SQ7 and SQ8; and finally, they could just use the less powerful 3.0 TDi V6 Bi turbo they used in the previous gen a6 and a7. The later is the one they've chosen. Which is not fine. In the previous gen, the car equiped with this engine was not an S-model (nor an RS, obviously), and they new they might get some bad reviews with an S-model with such low powered engine. I think that is more problematic than being a diesel. If Audi had put the tri turbo V8 diesel from the sq7, people would love it, because it would be the perfect rival to the BMW 550d, making them both the best continent-crosser-power-station-wagons. Then, Audi just needed to make the new RS6, which apparently they actually did a good job, and we would have the perfect Audi Station Wagon Duo. So yeah, not a bad call to go Diesel on the S6, just a bad call not to go for the V8 TDI.

I bought the last generation S6 simply because it had a petrol V8. I was expecting it to be the last V8 and was assuming the C8 would be a petrol v6, which it is around the rest of the world. The fact it's now a diesel v6 and is 100hp down on the previous model means I'd never consider it. This is effectively a new version of the A6 BiTurbo Diesel C7. What are you thinking Audi?

TDI wagon actually sounds for to me! Lots of torque + good mpg I love my Q7 TDI btw and I don't think I can go back to gas cars.

We have 2 of these on Police Advanced Driver Training. If driven correctly they are a fantastic vehicle. Ferociously quick and handle very well for large vehicle. Very comfortable too.

Why are cars like this being fake? Why do they have to put fake sound?

I love the fact that Audi used the A7 headlights for the RS6, not a huge of the regular A6 headlights. It wouldn’t look as aggressive as any RS6 should look like if they stuck with the regular A6 headlights.

carwow failed to mention that the air suspension fitted to these UK press cars IS NOT available for the UK market. They also failed to mention that the acoustic glass is not available in the UK either and with many other items not available in the UK.

I am SO lucky I live in Australia because our S6 has the 331kw 2.9L V6 and doesn't have those exhaust covers. Also this Euro spec S6 has some weird differences to ours.

if you ever want to own a s6 and be happy with it, go for the C7 versions with petrol V8 turbos, those sound good and with a after market exahaust its crazy

To S6 buyers the S6 is going to be the right car as it checks all the right boxes for them. And everyone is going on about fake exhaust, let’s not forget it’s a car manufacturer trend, it’s not a gasoline and yes the exhaust sounds are fake just play some music and forget about it. It’s a awesome car worth the price.

Audi should do what BMW does, make a A6s 55 tdi with this s6 engine and have a real Sport s6 with a v8 petrol...

To make it even worse, the smaller, cheaper S4 has the exact same powertrain. So what is the point of the S6?

Someone should show the engineers at Audi some pictures of the original Quattro and the V10 RS6. Maybe then they'll remember how to make nice cars again The only car in the current Audi range that I would like to own is the R8 V10. And that's living on borrowed time.
