My parents had one of these back in the early 90's (when they were cheap because of the whole unintended acceleration debacle, come to think of it - it could've been the late 80's), in later years there was another one in the extended family, but even though we have a history with these cars - I've never heard of this version.

I’ve said it before…reviews of vehicles like this are so much more interesting than the over-hyped super cars. As for the 5000, when it first came out, the design was a revelation. My mom really wanted one when new. The unintended acceleration issue was a sad story for the brand…took a long time to recover.

I owned a 1978 Audi 5000 (introductory year) in the early 2000s, it truly was an innovative vehicle. The options it had were crazy for a 70's car. I still wish I had it today as it was a very low mileage manual trans car
@Vin80_
@Vin80_ 2 года назад
What’s funny is why their cars had unintended acceleration, it’s because Audi mounted the pedals in the opposite direction, so people who were used to driving other cars would get in one, go to hit the brakes, but instead they’d hit the gas and… yeah that’s where it gets sad. Just be happy it was only 6 deaths and not 37 like what happened to Toyota from 2009 to 2011.
@angusnz7910
@angusnz7910 2 года назад
Was this acceleration thing real in the end or just operator error? Just seems odd it was the Americans only that had the issue. Here in NZ they were called 100, or 200 Turbo. I have owned both and to be honest couldn’t understand what the yanks were in about
@Vin80_
@Vin80_ 2 года назад
@@angusnz7910 it mostly affected shorter people and the pedals are flipped for gas and brakes compared to other cars, I assume in New Zealand the pedal direction wasn’t changed so it’s probably normal there.

Having driven a '89 Audi 100 for 7 years, I can only say that these are extremely well built cars, on par with Mercedes models of the era imo. There were some mechanical problems, for instance a leaky power steering system, but overall, these cars are rock solid with bullet proof 5 cylinder engines. Unfortunately, Doug didn't mention the engine that much nor the beautiful sound it produces, talking all the way while it's rumbling in the background :) Would love to drive one again. Btw, Doug: Treser is pronounced 'Treeeser' with a long first E. - Also remarkable that this one is sporting the Euro-Spec headlights and does not seem to have any sidemarkers at all...

@@PantherP74 Yes, that's why 89' rr flatcars were invented. - Ok, might have to change the year abbreviation from 89' to '89 I guess :D Model year 1990 is what I mean, you know :D But believe me, for european standards, a car of this length sure felt close to 89 feet. In addition, my car had a hitch fitted which made matters even worse. Luckily, there was much glass to see through and my car was the Avant model. So you could kinda guess where the car ended.

Well Doug this totally brings me back! I went from my Grandfathers 1965 International Harvester pick up truck, to my Uncles Audi 5000 CS Quattro Turbo because sadly he passed on because of Cancer just after purchasing it. You may think it was under powered, but for the day it wasn’t at all. I had so much fun in that car at speed and I also got in big trouble in that car. My father was a well-known lawyer in the town of grew up in and the hardest walk I had at 18 was on a Sunday morning to the breakfast table. After saying hello to him he looked at me and said what’s wrong? I said, ‘Dad I need your help’ and he said sternly, ‘what did you do?’ I said, ‘Dad I need your professional help’. The look of disappointment on his face said it all, but ‘Car Family’, this was the Triple Digit kind of Trouble, The kind when the Police Officer approached the window and said, ‘You know you were going so fast I was about ready to give up’! Yes, I got in serious trouble And in reflecting on it years later that Police Officer probably saved my life. A solid case of young, inexperienced and very lucky. Yes, the car was taken away and God I miss that thing even today!

I had several 5000s. I remember the Tresser specials too! They were the things of car magazine dreams although I did see one in 1990. These cars were so durable, Chinese automakers decided to buy rights to the body shell and suspension, and swiftly began producing them with puny 4 cylinder crappy engines. Those chinese "Type 44" cars were not real good to drive, but they clocked millions of miles over and over for chinese owners. These cars also never rusted, they were wax-filled unibodies with wax undercoating everywhere.

CARB (stands for California Air Resources Boarr) only has jurisdiction over cars registered in the state of California. California will not allow registration of any car not federalized with an non OEM engine after the 1975 model year. Additionally, federalized cars were required to have a catalytic converter emissions system not yet required in Europe at this time. The US spec federalized cars were severely restricted on emissions. In 1985 even US cars were just now creeping up in horsepower numbers after car manufacturers were still just figuring out how to make power without running afoul of US emissions laws.

I watched this review with particular interest because I was a tech at a VW/Audi dealer from 1973 to 1987. I can't comment on this car as I know nothing about it. In general terms the 1984 to 1986 5000 series were the most troublesome and should be avoided. For the 1987 model year, Audi finally got it right. These truly were very good cars along with the 1988s. The 1987 normally aspirated Quattro was the the overall champ though. No turbo issues and a trouble free drive line. My customers loved them. The climate control was a constant source of problems in the early cars along with the sun roof. The turbo cars suffered drivability problems throughout. Audi paid for a one time only carbon blast on all turbocharged 5000s. We sold a lot of them so I became quite proficient at doing them. This procedure transformed the car. Carbon build up on the valves was a serious issue and Golf/Jetta vehicles were also affected. The rubber boot covering the fuel lines on this car indicates having the recall to prevent engine fires. We had to do this on every turbo car we sold. As for the 5 cylinder engine, they are bulletproof. I only saw two engine replacements during my time. One was caused by owner neglect and one from overheating. This engine will tolerate all kinds of abuse and it's the one thing you shouldn't worry about. I wish the owner good luck on his sale but buyer beware.

Great find, love seeing reviews on something like this!!! The turbo had a boost gauge on that computer but it only read in bar. Also the rear seats had heated seats as an option but there wasn't a switch for them, they worked off the front switches. Treser is very known here in Switzerland, he was successful in the '82-'95. One can immediately recognise here the modified 100 CS model. Also important to say that Audi has never been compared to Saab. Its direct concurrence was BMW and Lancia (yes: lancia) when comparing typology and pricings. We were a vw/audi dealer family and this audi 100 reminds great times.

My earliest memory is that my grandfather had a perfect mint 100 in dark blue and with the 2,3 inline 5 engine, loved that car. Weird that he didn’t mention one of the biggest quirks…the entire engine was actually ahead of the front axle coupled to the trans that distributed power for the Quattro system. That explained the very forward placement and large front overhang. Also made for some crazy understeer and push combined with the Quattro system. Also the fact that this lux car only had a 3 speed auto where a garden variety Camry had a 4 speed

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Audi unintended acceleration fiasco. I feel like it's one of the more egregious examples of hit piece journalism gone awry. The 60 Minutes special which brought the whole thing about isn't easily found these days and I think most people know why. I'm glad Audi persevered but it was the kind of bad press that has killed smaller brands.

"Sudden" acceleration? I would have been happy to have ANY acceleration in the '85 5000s wagon (ahem, Avant) and then later 1990 100 Avant. Misunderstood by the public and mechanics alike I believe these models introduced the concept of euro luxury car depreciation. Both my Avants were bought as used super-bargains, and with a young family I really appreciated that! Used OE parts were cheap and plentiful too since due to massive depreciation even minor wrecks were parted out.

The worst part is that audi never did what they should've done and sued CBS/60 Minutes for defamation and slander the same way GM did too NBC in 1993 after dateline aired a 100% fake "expose" about the "safety" of the '74-'87 C/K pickup line. The case that 60 minutes featured in their story eventually went to trial and the jury ruled in audi's favor saying that the fault for the "wrongful death" of the six year old boy who died laid entirely on his mother who was driving the car when the accident happened.

My first car was an '85 Audi 5000s turbo. Absolutely loved that car, but the white aluminum door handles were a nightmare in cold climates (which is surprising since they are German.) I had two just snap off in extreme cold temps. It's really unfortunate about the unintended acceleration nonsense, but maybe it made Audi that much better because they had to overcome that public perception. I had a 2015 A8L until a few years ago, and it was interesting to look at all the improvements Audi made in the 30 years between my car's model years.

I've been through an Audi 5000 pretty much completely thanks to some mice who thought the wire insulation was a tasty snack. There weren't that much electronics in them, especially compared to anything modern. I didn't find it at all challenging to repair or diagnose--though I do remember seeing some high current wires and connectors were rather undersized and started to overheat even before the mice got to it... The heated seat wires were the worst if I remember. That was kind of sketch. Those got upgraded substantially. The mechanical fuel injection on the other hand--and the hydraulic brake booster/suspension leveling... Those caused a wee bit of head scratching. 🤯 I would hazard to guess that whatever surge issue existed was probably caused by a mechanic who monkied on and didn't understand the mechanical injection system. If you read on the unintentional acceleration / surge issue, ABC had to modify the car to do it, and it's pretty clear they were just out to kill AUDIs reputation for some unknown reason. For one, the brakes were way more powerful than the engine, and could easily stall the torque converter at any RPM. Tested it myself. THOUGH the accumulator could run out of pressure if the brake was very rapidly depressed many multiples of times very quickly. Secondly, the car can be shifted out of gear or shut off before much speed was gained. If there was such an issue with these cars, it must have been driver error. Like little old men and ladies who press the accelerator instead of the brake.
@cutroc350
@cutroc350 2 года назад
The 200 aka 5000 for you was a good car. They are actually quite simple from a electrical standpoint. Then again there were many "Techs" that just called everything they misunderstood "junk". The "reputation" you speak of applied only to North America and was painted on by media and ignorance. That "junk" powered Audi through some iconic motorsports moments and set endurance records.
@jamesmurphy9346
@jamesmurphy9346 2 года назад
@@cutroc350 so they were really great but Audi scrapped the entire line and started over ? Been a few years but I do remember the tail lights were problematic. The old " the better engineered they are the harder they are to work on " lol. I'll put my skill at finding/fixing electrical or mechanical up against anybody. I don't believe I ever said the Saudi's were too electronic, I criticized the design of components and of course high price. I think 5000 back then was 25k around Mercedes territory which I did MB tech training in Jacksonville, Fl. Both part 1 and 2. Thanks for the memories.
