Rob clearly states that the Azden mics offer a terrific improvement over the DSLR's built-in mics but there is a noticeable noise floor and some hiss. These microphones do offer tremendous value and performance for the price.
@BandH
@BandH 12 лет назад
@JacanaProductions It is not usually recommended as it can add unwanted noise to the signal but you could split the microphone signal with a Y cable into the two inputs so you can level one lower than the other. It is more recommended to record to the single channel and monitor and ride the levels to avoid it from peaking.

I didn't think much of the Rode Video Mic Pro so I bought an Oktava M012 and a Tascam DR-100mk2. I've tested them, see my videos. obviously not as good for 'gun & run' but nice for film making. Just like with colour grading footage, editing the audio with eq and compression / limiting is really important and most people overlook this.

This video is amazingly excellent video. I have a Canon 70D, and a "RODE Videomic Pro - Compact Shotgun Microphone". I am experiencing significant audio "hiss" when I am doing some face-to-face indoor interviews. The hiss is there when I use the on-board built-in mic, or the RODE Videomic Pro. I'm not sure if it's a problem with the 70D camera, or if it's some sort of audio setting in the camera. I have tried changing some settings, but it's still there. Any suggestions?

@ToasterShow The Zoom H4n is a wonderful device for most field recording applications and is excellent as a direct mic into a DSLR in many situations as well. Where a more directional audio pick-up pattern is desired - using the Rode VideoMic is a sound choice and highly recommended.

So, which Rode mount is better for not knocking in the field while moving around a lot, the new Rycote integrated shock mount on the VideoMic or the mount on the VideoMic Pro? And, I'll probably buy both the VideoMic Pro and the Stereo VideoMic along with dead cat and dead kitten. Is there a package deal on that?

So is the stereo microphone the better option for travel video? I figured a shotgun would be counterproductive as it would cut out much of the ambient sound that gives a shot its sense of reality. An example would be taking a shot of my wife sitting in audience listening to a concert but barely being able to actually hear the music because the shotgun isn't pointed at the stage. I'm not into doing interviews while traveling - I just shoot the scenes and the family occasionally walking through shots.

So, Rode only offers the better suspension with the lower-price VideoMic and not the better VideoMic Pro? Off the subject but relevant - does anyone retrofit the Canon SX50 with a mic jack? I use the T4i mainly, which already has a jack but I'm doing insect field videos so the 50x zoom of the SX50 is good but the audio is almost omnidirectional so the viewer hears the insects 5ft away and above in a tree louder than the one in the video 15 ft away and straight ahead. Thanks.

Often the best solution is using two cameras, pre-focused on each individual. Quick focusing may be also be accomplished manually on many cameras that offer this feature. Preset lens markings enable focus that "snaps" sharply into place for each subject. Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com.>Mark

Hi! I have a question. I will film wild animals (such as mostly bears but also wolverines and wolfs) from a bear hide in Finland. The animals will probably be on a range from 30-50 meters but possibly as close as 5 meters. If I want to achieve great noiseless sound when filming and recording these animals, what would you recommend? I have tried a videomic röde pro but was heavily disappointed as it could not quite pick up the sounds of the animal which required me to amp up the sound so much that it all became very noise. Thanks, hope you can help me, I really want to achieve good sound!
@BandH
@BandH 8 лет назад
+Henrik Nilsson - At5 meters a quality long shotgun microphone should work. At farther distances, a parabolic microphone dish would be necessary.Audio can be picked up from as little as 3.0' (0.9m) or as much as 500.0' (152.4m) depending on wind and weather conditions. bhpho.to/1JYTKigMark S

Rode VideoMic (originally) causes knocking noises and is very bad with camera handling noises on DSLR's, what microphone would you say is better? Tile the camera left or right with VideoMic on and it knocks. Have replaced rings etc etc.. Surely there is a better solution and a better mic that doesn't have such a pick up for camera handling and doesn't knock as you 'run and gun' ? What mic is best for fast style shooting that also needs sound recording?

I'm not a pro shooter but I'm looking for a better solution for recording audio for my kid's singing, concert and piano recitals. My camera is the Panasonic GH3 and would like to have the option of shotgun or stereo. Thinking a mid-side solution would be good and I'm looking at the Sony ECM-957PRO but can't find much in the way of reviews. Most recording is done from a good distance away (20+ feet) so I'm wondering on better solutions and ideally would not want to spend more than $300. Ideas?
@BandH
@BandH 10 лет назад
The Sony mic you have selected is not appropriate for use at a distance. It is ideal for close miking at the stage or atop the piano. This distance demands a shotgun style. Consider the Shure VP83. It will connect to your camera without adapters. B&H # SHVP83. bhpho.to/1bK6BEY Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions: askbh@bandh.com. Mark S.

How do I adjust the recording levels on a canon 650d? I have the rhode video mic pro. Have been using it at -10db and wondering why results were less than expected. The 650d manual doesn't explain much on sound levels or external mics.
@BandH

Latin Dance Videos The Canon T4i offers auto recording level. It should be switched off from the MENU for the best results when using an external microphone. Manual Mode: For advanced users. You can adjust the sound recording level to one of 64 levels. Select [Rec. level] and look at the level meter while pressing the < > key to adjust the sound recording level. While looking at the peak hold indicator (approx. 3 sec.), adjust so that the level meter sometimes lights up the ?12? (-12 dB) mark on the right for the loudest sounds. Hi, how could i get a good quality of audio with 70 D canon in outdoor for interview? by just rode or h4n?
@BandH
@BandH 10 лет назад
For 1-2 people outdoor interviews where the subjects are relatively close together, a lavilier mic would be your best option. A shotgun is going to pick up any sound in the direction you are shooting (wind, construction, traffic...). For the 70D, you could checkout the Azden WMS-PRO VHF Wireless Lavalier Handheld Mic System. An external recorder will allow you to use better mics, and will allow for better quality sound, but a lavalier attached to the 70D should be more than sufficient. *Christina* askbh@bandh.com bhpho.to/1pEDk4L

i have problem and i want to see if you guys can help me. i use the T4i to record my live videos and mix/render on adobe Premiere. now here's the weird problem: when i use my Rode mic (directly into camera) i get sound from left and right on my pc and youtube PC and Cell phone. BUT, when i use my lavalier mic, i get sound from both sides on my PC but NOT on youtube using my cell phone. when i plug in my headphones on my cell phone, i get sound from both sides. Even though lavalier levels on my T4i says its recording L & R at same lvls (like the Rode mic). i thought since the lavalier was mono (Right?) and i was just importing it onto a stereo track, (like i did with ROde mic audio) maybe that was creating the problem. i did tests, by creating a mono track on Premiere and imported and tested it. Still same problem on cell (with lavalier). Did another test and now panned the mono track to the Right and only then i get sound on youtube using my cell. However, i get sound only from right side on youtube using my PC. i hope you guys understand me. any help would do. im still testing things out.

What is the best mic for Canon SX400?
@BandH
@BandH 8 лет назад
+Wade Productions 2016 - Unfortunately, the Canon PowerShot SX400 does not have a jack for an external mic. You would need to look at an external digital recorder such as the Zoom H4n 4-Channel Handy Recorder, and then sync sound in post. *Christina* AskPhoto@bhphoto.com bhpho.to/1Hjv5Fq
