It´s unbelievable the difference clean and dirty power makes. WIth dirty power I can´t even stand listening to music, it´s boring and uninvolving. But when the power is right I can listen for hours and hours and be mesmerized at the music.
Also, make sure your Amp’s circuit breaker and other audio gear circuit breakers are connected to the same leg in your panel, especially source…. 10awg wire and 20A breaker is typically good for most amplifiers.
Thanks... When I step back and think about it, it makes me wonder why I didn't focus on this more in the past. I did have pretty good test results with my power and the foresight to do the Richard Gray whole house protection, but this is another level of detail that totally makes sense to address. Most people like the comfort that a fancy/quality power cord provides, but never look at their breaker box to see what the wire and connections look like feeding everything. The ground is also neglected which probably makes the most audible difference of anything if you have a ground loop. I'll have more good stuff from Rex in the future.
@@AudiophileJunkie awesome Jason looking forward to it. I'm about to do some dedicated lines in my room so this is perfect timing for me. I've got an electrician that was an audio engineer in a former life doing the work. So I'm definitely right into these videos.
Great info and very interesting! I do a little bit of electrical work as a DIYer as necessary. Found it very interesting that he talked about the air conditioning disconnect box as being a potential source of noise. I just changed mine out last year when I realized that it had been arcing. Didn't realize I was potentially helping my audio system at the time though LOL. Would love to see more about electrical. Thanks again!
I am having an electrician wire 4 dedicated circuits each with it's own ground to the breaker panel using 10 gage Romex. One for my VAC Master Pre-amp that already has it's own separate power supply, one each for my VAC 452IQ musicbloc in mono, the 4th one for my Niagara 3,000 that has my cd player and my APEX DCS Rossini DAC. I am getting estimates this week. Luckily the breaker panel is directly behind my listening room and attic space above so easy to run the new wiring only about 25 to 30 feet for each circuit. 2 2 plug outlets already there but going to change to 4 outlet each but own circuits. Right now 4- 2 plugs around the room all on one breaker circuit.
Question: would it make sense to run 240V, 8/3 wire to a small sub panel with a few breakers in panel. then 120V 20A breakers for amps (short 12/2 wire to receptacles, 15A breakers for Sources, Preamps….
Wow, I'm a CPA, spent 10 years at Price Waterhouse, before Coopers. So cool. We should form an audiophile Club just for CPAs. Looks to be a great video about - no back to the show.
@@AudiophileJunkie Enron was in Texas, did you have a ringside seat? I guess all that off balance sheet stuff got confusing. Price Waterhouse almost got together with Arthur Anderson but could not come to terms on retirement issues. So we're not related. Sorry to hear that it didn't work out not a good situation
I was in New Orleans at the time of Enron, so didn't know any of the players in that disaster, but it was amazing how a few individuals took down the most successful private company in the world at the time. Later, everyone was found not-guilty, but the damage had been done.
Once all is addressed at the breaker box would you still need a power conditioner in your system? Figure is the power is clean to the outlet no need to spend money on conditioner
I learned that US houses has 2-phase 240 V in the panel and it is used for heavy loads like ovens etc. Why not have a dedicated 240 V outlet for audio as well?
Interesting thought... Much of my gear can switch itself internally between 120 and 240. Perhaps 240v would be a benefit for my amp, which has a 2000 VA transformer. Of course the wiring from the panel to the outlet would have to be upgraded to a heavier gauge, and the panel would have to have room and capacity to make that change. We typically use double pole breakers on 240 volt here. Thanks for sharing.
I depend on a PS AUDIO Directstream PowerPlant 12, then l know when l plug in my fancy power cables, they are transferring clean, quiet power to my components.
Yes... Those things can help, but one thing you'll notice in upcoming videos is that the problems often come from other gear plugged into the same power conditioner, and the outlets aren't really isolated like they claim...or at least not to the level of separate dedicated lines which also can supply power to amp demands better than many conditioners. Also, improving the power to the conditioners also improves their performance as well. The biggest takeaway for me isn't even the subjective sound benefits. It's in the noise floor of better grounding and safety that is worth more attention in the hobby.
I hear that you hen some people install a Generac or permanent power generator that your power isn’t as good anymore.I think a Tesla power wall or inverter could be better
That's a legitimate concern for many and we're actually going to address that in a future video. My friend has a Generac and his audio system will be bypassing that generator.
