Audit | Hermes Deliveries Working Illegally | Today I have a wander around Sheffield, on the previous Sunday I went past Hermes the delivery people and saw a counter balance fork truck operating illegally on a public highway. I asked the driver if we was on a public road, and he confirmed we was. So I decided to go back today and pay them a visit with my camera.

Hermes without doubt, the worse logistics / delivery company I have ever dealt with, and I’ve dealt with a few. Nothing in this video surprises me about their operating practices.

Shame you never got to film the man who Hermes employs to steal a fifth of all my parcels! I always panic when ebay tracking codes are with these guys

As a HGV-1 Driver myself . That was top Class reversing , as the Bay was on his Blind/Far side .

It seems that over the last 10 or so years working practice have taken a nose dive .I think health & safety is a joke as in some companies you have shown .You really do high light what is going on & is to your credit it’s brought to our attention ,also the environment has been covered .A big well done & thanks 😊

When I was working, forks were allowed to cross a public road, if the journey was less than 2/3 mile (I think). It would be covered by the firms blanket insurance. In the case of a Moffett, I'm sure they are covered by the insurance on the truck.

When it’s being used on public roads for travelling less than 1000 yards between work sites, working on roadworks, or for delivering goods between private premises, then it will be classed as a work truck. It will also be excused from the Road Vehicles Regulations for any distance below 1000 yards. What requirements are needed? If you’re plan on operating a forklift truck on a public road, then you’ll need to adhere to certain requirements: The forklift must be registered with the DVLA. It must be taxed and insured for road use. Registration plates must be displayed on the forklift. These are the rules that apply to all mechanically-propelled vehicles that are being used or kept on public roads, in accordance with the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994. Of course as the operator of the forklift you must have: A full UK driving license. Passed a forklift operator course. Keep in mind, certain age restrictions will apply to the operator of the forklift depending on the different weights of the truck when it’s fully laden. Be careful not to assign an operator to a forklift who is technically underage. The forklift will also need to be fitted with appropriate lighting for use on a public road. For example, if the truck is going to be travelling at under 25 mph then it will need to have an amber beacon that lights up. If the total weight of the truck, which includes its load, exceeds 3500kg, then it will be classed as a HGV. If it comes it at a weight under 3500kg, it will be classed as a light goods vehicle. Also, you need to make sure that it complies with the Road Vehicles Regulations, which may require you to apply certain modifications to the truck. If you’re operating an electric-powered forklift then it will need to be taxed under the electric vehicle tax.

It seems petty as he is likely just taking a small shortcut BUT it is a public road and he is driving illegally which means that vehicle has no insurance if he hits somebody (and those things can do a lot of damage)

Whenever I order anything online I double check, triple check that Herpes are not my courier, if I don't have the option to select an alternative courier, I simply look elsewhere.

Hermes are an awful company. Every single parcel I've had delivered by them has been broken or damaged. Their customer services operators are rude and disrespectful, never again will I deal with them.

so no road tax , license plate or insurance for the fork lifts and all the HSE stuff that goes with driving on the public road , now we know why they are so cheap , they are breaking the laws

Hey up Pete - you are 100% correct unless the tractor and trailer has a forklift on the back within the 18 meters - this would have its own plates at times - if you look at the yard, it is rammed, but there is no reason not to reverse the trailer, into the actual yard to unload, simples - all about the 5th wheel... Dont think he was resting/night out in the cab do you? ;-)

I will never use Hermes again after I got a parcel from John Lewis and the item inside was broken because of the state of the box it came in.

You can drive a fork lift on a public road, there are other factors involved as to how far you can travel etc etc. Your wrong on this one.

you are the saddest guy on youtube.....going on like you know the rules and regs ..... if a forklift is traveling less that 100 yards It will fall under the category of ‘work trucks’ if it is using public roads for passing between premises/sites in distances under 1000 yards, delivering goods between private premises in distances under 1000 yards, or if it’s working on roadworks. Any distance below 1000 yards, and you may be excused from the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations, meaning that fewer modifications might be needed - but the vehicle must still must be insured and registered.

Forklifts cannot legally be driven on public roads without certain requirements because forklifts have large blind spots and very poor braking systems. WHAT ARE LAWS ABOUT FORKLIFTS DRIVING ON PUBLIC ROADS? Your forklift must be registered with the DVLA, taxed and insured. The Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 states that all mechanically propelled vehicles must have the necessary registration and taxation in order to be used or stored on public roads. Other laws you need to follow driving forklifts on public roads: Like any other road vehicle, your forklift will also need a license plate. The forklift must have appropriate lighting. This specifically includes an amber beacon that lights up when the vehicle is travelling below 25mph. The forklift driver must have passed their forklift operator training and have a full UK driving license. In some cases, however, there may be an age restriction on who can operate the forklift depending on its loaded weight. You will have to investigate this as this is only in specific circumstances. If you are operating an electric-powered forklift, then it needs to be taxed under the electric vehicle tax. Travelling a Short Distance (Less than 1000 yards) The requirements change slightly when you are travelling under 1000 yards on a public road. In this case, your vehicle will be classified as a “work truck” and will be exempt from the Road Vehicles Regulations. Your vehicle will still require licensing and registration, but it will be more standard licencing and registration according to the weight of the lift truck and how it is propelled. To meet the “work truck” criteria, the forklifts should mainly be used on private premises. It should only be used on public roads for carrying goods between private premises, passing between private premises, or working in connection to road works. Of course, this only applies to distances under 1000 yards. N.B. Even if you are travelling less than 1000 yards, you need to have a full UK driver’s license and formal training. Travelling a Longer Distance (Over 1000 yards) The exemptions of being a “work truck” no longer apply for distances over 1000 yards, and so your forklift will no longer be exempt from Road Vehicles Regulations. The licensing of your forklift will be dependent upon its total weight. If the total weight of the truck (including its load) exceeds 3,500kg, it will be classified as an HGV. Otherwise, it will simply be classified as a light goods vehicle. To register your vehicle with your local DVLA, you need to fill out a V55/5 form.

Listen, much as I don't get the point of you doing this, I'd appreciate you blurring the license plates of the cars. Those aren't courier cars, they're the van/truck drivers and warehouse staff cars and South Yorkshire has a bit of a problem with cloned plates at the moment. Mine is in there and I'd love to reduce the risk, since I know it's not possible to remove the risk without stopping driving.

According to what I have just read and depending on the weight of a fork lift truck which over a certain weight will come under the HGV category Anyway it claims if a forklift is traveling less than a 1000 meters ,there are different rules being on a public road , compared to over 1000 m?

I always thought that forklifts have to pay road tax insurance etc and as you say display a number plate we'll spotted young man and the Mercedes tractor unit should not be parked on the side of the road as it states on the operators licence the hgv can only park in the designated yard so they are in breach of their goods vehicles operators licence I'm sure DVSA would have something to say

Fork Truck aint operating illegally as they are allowed to access to the roadside for the purpose of loading and unloading vehicles. Hence you get trucks with moffets on the back which is a fork lift mounted on the rear of a truck.

hermes driver kept taking photos saying we was not in because she was to lazy to walk up my driveway anyway I saw here in the village smallfield and walked up to her asking for my 8 month olds Xmas presents and she aimed for me with her car and hit me knocking me on to the side of her car the police is now investigating

I drive articulated lorries for living and we don’t have banksmen either but we deliver to shops and factories think a lot of companys leave it to the driver now you get the odd one that will help you if it’s tight access the public seem more helpful just latley had few people help me if I need it or they think I do
