Great walkthru. The most difficult thing for me is to have a right audio source which you can use to hear the before after. Playing a movie track doesnt help much because one is unaware of all the different frequencies that exist in a given section - so using this becomes a trial & error method. I wish someone could give a link to an authentic audio source that can be used for setting up Audyssey
The App is a must for me as a content creator. It’s nice to be able to load my settings after reviewing an AVR or processor. I have yet to try without midrange compensation to see what my ears prefer. One question I have is if you are adding a curtain at 300Hz, wouldn’t that negate the need to turn off midrange compensation? Keep up the great work.
Awesome video I love the app I run the curtain at 300hz myself. I never touched the subwoofer one before I'm going to try that tonight. Thank you for detailed video. I personally love this app with my X3700h Denon.
Def interested in a before and after adjusting eq range, also just got my mini dsp umik 1 and am going to be relying heavily on your videos to walk me through the process so thank you for those. As usual another stellar video and until the next, cheers🍻
A bit confused.... I would love to use the app to further tweak and make the system sound better, but for first time users it seems challenging. Are they default settings or curves we can use ? Not sure if I will be able to understand to navigate through the app. 🤔
There are 2 choices called target sound options but they are pretty similar to each other. I am also new to this stuff and have zero tech skills but the app is not very difficult to understand once you use it. If you do get it I highly recommend using a tablet and not your phone. The curve editor is next to impossible to use on a phone.
Would also recommend setting the crossover to 80 for all speakers (the common crossover for HT, thx standard). Also keep the distance and levels as it measures the sound/room itself (sound hitting the mic) so it’s a bit different than measuring the distance yourself.
I purchased it not knowing if it would be any better than what was already included.I have to tell you for my room and little skill level I got a really nice improvement to my speaker output. I just ordered a UMIK and started to review tour videos on REW to improve my speakers, but my advice for audio Noobs like me buy it,it’s $20 my pizza cost that 😂
You recommend turning off midrange compensation and cutting off EQ at 301, but wouldn’t that be unnecessary to turn of mid range comp if you cut it well before 2000khz anyway?
i had the same exact thought, and what's the point of making any custom curves as mentioned in the video (after) the curtain? wouldn't the curtain void any modifications after the certain set frequency?
I believe he goes over how you set things up in the app. So he shows how you remove the 2K dip, and then he shows how you can cut the area at 300Hz - but you might in your own room want to keep the full range and remove the dip - so he has now tought you how to do that :)
This was very helpful but maybe I'm missing something. Why does it matter if you have MRC on or off if you set the cap to 300hz? With the cap at 300 won't it respect 300? Or is it staying from 300 but ignores it at 2khz and adds the dip anyway?
Hello, I have a Marantz Receiver and a Mini DSP HD. My question is should I run Audyssey with the Mini DSP hooked up or not? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Barry.
I’ve got the same receiver and am having a hell of a time getting the app to even work from iOS. The calibration goes fine, but sending it to the receiver fails…always. I did a factory reset and it sent once. Added surrounds and tried to run it again and got the dreaded connection error. Tried saving the AVR configuration from the web interface and it failed even after all night. Any ideas? Is there a harder reset than factory?
Hi just bought the app and wondering if it’s possible to import the settings from the AVR When I connect to my Marantz SR7015 I don’t have any previous setup I can copy from. So it looks like I have to take a measurement using the app. Is that right? Thanks 😊
Why would you ever NOT want audyssey to attempt to flatten everything? And then parametric EQ it depending on the content? Are the audyssey results not accurate? REW says they're off? Secondly, can you set the Q factor for the full eq? And how many frequencies are available? I've got 7 frequencies EQ'd for my 20-300hz alone via APO equalizer on windows.
I would love if the app allowed you to set where you want audyssey to target before running it, that way you could have all the filters being utilized where you actually want them. As it is now, they are being used and then when you set your cut off, you have wasted filters that could've been used elsewhere.
Question: If I set Dynamic EQ "ON" in the app and then send the result finally over to my AVR, then can I still, for this curve, modify it later on in the OSD of the AVR? The OSD has 4 values for Dynamic EQ, 5, 10, 15 dB and Off. Can I utilize this for configs generated with the app? Or do I have to choose like: - If I want to optimize without the 2 kHz dip, then I have to use the mobile app, but then I have to accept not being able to fine-tune the Dynamic EQ/Volume settings later on. - If I absolutely want to fine-tune my Dynamic EQ/Volume setting, I cannot use the app but must use the built-in OSD-based room calibration, implying that I have to accept the 2 kHz dip. ?
I am using a Marantz SR5012 and I am considering this app. I have Paradigm defiance X12’s for subwoofers. Do you recommend shutting off the subs in the app than running ARC for each subwoofer. What is the best way to do this?
I have a really dumb question. I own and love the Marantz SR6015. Is it possible to hook up a "tube preamplifier" to my 2 front speakers threw the marantz. So when I listen to music I get the "Tube Effect".
Can anybody explain why after running Audyssey MiltiEq App my center channel shows that it is set to 40hz but when I look on my marantz receiver it shows it's set to 80hz but the rest of my speakers are the same on the app and my receiver
Great video! Just so I'm clear, you did not use Audyssey to apply anything to the sub because you knocked the frequency range down to 20hz, but you did apply a house curve, right? Is there any reason you did not want Audyssey to apply filters to the sub?
Excellent question and thanks for the comment, Dan! You're correct in that I didn't want Audyssey applying any filters to the sub channel. Essentially, that will "undo" pretty much all of the work you do previously if you're using something like a miniDSP to time align and EQ your subs. That's where I also applied my house curve. By default, Audyssey will attempt to flatten out the subwoofer response and remove any EQ you've already applied through other means (miniDSP, Parametric EQ on the sub itself, etc). Using the app, you do have the ability to go in and add something like a house curve, though in my experience it's really difficult to get fine, granular control using the app on your smartphone or tablet. I hope that answers your question! Let me know if you have any more and I'll try to get to it sooner rather than later (still unpacking from our move. UGH! haha)
So what if you do not have a miniDSP and have done that work already, would you have Audyssey apply their filters to the sub? Meaning don't move all the way to the left ?
After running the app, is the EQ still applied when using direct mode? I’m confused because it says Audyssey is disabled in direct mode and no processing is being applied.
I am contemplating on buying the app for my Denon x4500h .I am trying much as possible to grasp all these theory behind all these setting but it is tough.I am all new to this.I like my speakers bright and my Martin Logan speakers are not bright enough for me.Please can this app help to adjust the high frequency to some level more than the built in Audyssey .Thanks in advance.
I want to use only 2 speakers and maybe a subwoofer and use only the manual EQ. Is that possible? I am only interested in stereo sound which i adjust with a manual eq.
I had my 1st experience with Audyssey and the MULTI EQ app only about a week ago for my Denon AVR X3800H. You showed me a few things I didnt know I could do, thanks! Great video. I'm going to try and tinker with the midrange compensation - turning it off to get rid of that 2khz dip and hear if I like it any better. I'm currently running 7.3.4 with 2 subs on my front stage outside of the 2 front towers. The 3rd sub is midwall, right behind my main listening area/couch. Its not a dedicated home theater room, its a common living room area, so Im a bit limited on where I can place my subs.
Please 🙏 me i need more dialog clarity and presence in in movies i current have denon avr-x1800h without this app and have dialog enchanted on high and front speaker boost to 8db plus to have better dialog but stiil miss some clarity ...this midrange compensation will help me i will buy app only if help me for better dialog presence and clarity without doing 10db boost center speaker...?
I've heard some people say that absolutely none of your speaker levels should be over 0.0 Level (dB) in your receiver or you could damage your speakers at high volumes. Any truth to that?
Thanks. You’re videos are great. I just posted a question in your Audyssey MultEQ Editor App video yesterday. It looks like you didn’t apply any Audyssey filters to the sub after running everything but you did apply a house curve. Wanted to make sure that was correct. Thanks, Dan
Great video. I’ve been considering the app because when we sold our house, the buyers asked to keep my Denon S710W. I didn’t see any issue and figured I’d get a newer model. I purchased the S760W and Audyssey has been terrible on this one. Dialogue and normal scenes sound muted and action scenes are unbearably loud. I used dynamic volume on light for a bit but hated how it worked. Maybe the midrange dip is causing my issues. Hopefully this will help. My S710W sounded great using Audyssey but this 760 has been bad.
good info, didn't know abou this app but thought there should be something hence the reason I watched. Twenty bucks, that is nothing, I have have spent more on velcro wire ties to dress the speaker wires and I am sure that everyone that has ever toyed around with this stuff has. Thanks of the info.
Honestly $20 is a good value to unlock the extra functionality. If the receiver was $20 more and the app was included people would be bragging about how awesome it was to have it out of the box 🤷
I have been fooling around with the MultiEQ Editor Android app and have a question. When you're running a calibration from the app, it there a way to back out of a mic position because of a burst of outside noise and redo it? When you run Audyssey from an AVR and that happens, you can simply hit cancel and redo that position. With the editor app, I haven't found a way to do that which can make a calibration difficult unless it's done under noiseless conditions.
It’s been a while since I’ve used the app and I only ever have on iOS devices. With that said, I do remember that after it measures every speaker at a position, at the end it allows you to redo that position again. I recall having to do that when we first moved in because our neighbor started their Mustang with their loud exhaust during one of the measurements haha.
@HomeTheaterGamer Thanks. The IOS version may have a redo choice but it appears that the Android doesn't or it may show up here and there but you can't activate it. I recall that Joe N Tell has said that the $200 MultiEQ-X program does let you redo a position but that the MultiEQ Editor does not. While it's great that the editor app lets you make make various changes in the baseline Audyssey calibration and send them to the AVR, the inability to redo a position if ambient noise suddenly is heard is a fatal flaw. If you live in a residential neighborhood, like I do, you're always dealing with cars going by, dogs barking or, in my case, since Travis Air Force Base is 20 miles away, the occasional C-5, C-17 or KC-10 flying over, and the ability to stop a position run and redo it is crucial. Oh well.
@@HomeTheaterGamer Turns out that you were right. On the Android app, if extraneous noise disrupts the test tones to a position, you have to let them finish and wait for the data for that position to transfer from the AVR to the Editor app. It takes a while but once that's done the Retest Last Position is enabled. After, I forgot how many positions (2 or 3 I'm guessing) the app also lets you end the test and use what you've already done to complete the calibration. So it turns out that the MultiEQ Editor is fully functional. It's obviously not as capable as Audyssey's own MultiEQ-X program but, for now, it works for me.
How do we extend the microphone? Most high end AVR's that would get this calibration are installed in an equipment rack that can be over 100 feet away from the room to be tested.
If you have a house curve setup through the MiniDSP, then I’d say yes if you run Audyssey afterwards. The app allows you to disable EQ/room correction on the sub completely so you’ll retain your house curve.
Ben thinkin,n still thinkin, about buyin the app, i got marantx ser 6015 with a 5.1,2 klipsch speaker set up., i manually do my settings, run the audyssey calibration, without this app, after calibrate is done,i charge the settings again manually,to my liknings. Think is if i Will notice any differences in my soundpicture? Guess most ppl use streaming apps, i use one that don’t compress music,BUT then i put an old judas priest concert in mu uhd player, And wow! Difference in streaming, and have music on a disc, music from a disc, beats streaming always,so still thinkin if i should get it or not!
I’m using a miniDSP and already have things dialed in there with an EQ I like. Setting the sub to 20Hz on the app essentially turns off the majority of room correction and EQ done on the sub, otherwise Audyssey will try and flatten that all out.
@@HomeTheaterGamer oh ok, that makes more sense. I was confused by it. They say if you turn off Dynamic EQ you should add 3-6db to your subs so does that mean if I use Dynamic EQ I should just leave the subs to what audyssey set them at? Which was -9db or should I still try and level them to 75db with a meter?
How do I create a copy of my master file. On the home screen the Multi EQ Editor shows my master file and the big new plus. When I open the master file I see in the top left corner the up arrow. When I select it a box says send to AV receiver, Share Link via Google Drive, Send a Copy and Move to. How do you make a duplicate copy. I throughly enjoy your channel .
For the life of me I don't understand why Denon/Marantz does just put this in all their avrs from the factory. My only issue with "Audyssey" is once you use it ,it doesn't allow you to make any changes. It's like Audyssey is saying I've changed all your settings and you "will" like it ,period! Everyone has a different idea what sounds good to them. The "editor" app basically gives the power back to the user. It does this for $20 bucks. I say it's definitely worth it. Seriously I spend more than $20 bucks on a plethora of things that have zero long term use like this app does. But ,again if Denon is listening please for the love of God just add it to all your future avrs.
God I wish I understand 1/3 of this... I understand the 80hz crossover to pass low frequencies to the sub, but the khz talk and "curtain" and graph, it's all so confusing and Chinese
The application on the MS store is MultEQ-X, which $200 for the license and is different than what's featured in this video (this video was released long before that application came out). The app featured in this video is the MultEQ Editor app and is only available on mobile platforms (iPhone, iPad, Android, etc.) and costs $20.
I don’t believe you can. There is a piece of software on PC called ratbuddyssey that allows you to edit the Audyssey files parameters. I’ve experimented with it and haven’t found it too intuitive and very hit or miss for me, but I honestly haven’t spent enough time with it to say it’s not worth it. If I can find some time after we move, I plan to do a video on it and possibly some tutorials.
You can do as little as 3 positions if I remember correctly, but Audyssey won’t let you do just a single position. You can just move the mic a few inches to the left, right, forwards or back for the other positions if it’s just you. I’ve seen some people suggest to just do all 8 positions and never move the mic. I don’t recommend doing this as it can (and most likely will) cause issues.
I thought to mention while Audyssey will make you calibrate at least 3 “positions”, you don’t actually have to move the mic when it tells you to. This means you can only calibrate a single position if you want 😉
I appreciate your like but the question was a serious one. Aren't you defeating the purpose of running Audyssey? I also noticed you turned Multi EQ off. Isn't that the same as not having Audyssey at all? I'm not being sarcastic. Just curious as to if I'm totally missing something.
I just used the app and set the cartain at 300 and it sounds better than 500 or 700 on my HT system. Auddessey does more than EQ, it does phase setting, db level matching and it does base management which is probably the most important with room calibration. But the reason why I would want to use the curtain is that my speakers or all speakers have their own particular sound and you'll want to keep as much of that sound as possible, and when you EQ your speaker you're changing the characteristics of the speaker's design. Mostly it's a little bit of trial and error and what I'm learning is that there's no one way fits all and you might have to do a calibration several times to find that right sound and that this journey is a learning experience, I'm still in the learning process. Maybe this helps some.
I tried using the step-down version of Audyssey on my X1600H in my very small home theater. Sounded horrible. It either just can‘t handle such small rooms or the regular XT version is just so much worse. EDIT: it got all the distances wrong and then obviously sounded phase incorrect and just overall wrong and weird. Speakers are in a range of 80-180cm. Doing a manual EQ by sounds way better. But the app seems very interesting with just being able to correct the lower frequency range and using the manual EQ above that. Might give that a shot.
The absolute dumbest thing about this app is it appears it can't pull an already created audyssey profile created within an AVR. Flushing $20 down the toilet would've been more useful than this.
It is a little busy but you can create new profile using app. However, if you have bi-amp front speaker configuration calibration from within app will mess bi-amp connection :/
The audyssey curve made in the receiver isn’t the same as the one you create on the app. So it’s absolutely not dumb. The app and the room correction done with the app is more advanced.
@@KillerSneak there is literally no point to the app if it can't pull the custom calibrated EQ using a calibrated UMIK from the processor to copy, edit, and adjust and reupload
The APP is totally worth it... BUT the PC Audyssey software is NOT. That application is completely unfit for its task and needs many many improvements to be usable.
The app is bogus...u can't hear any difference with midrange compensator on or off...it don't sound good with the curtain from 300 onwards...leaving the curtain.open is a better sound...run audyssey and select flat and ur on..
It all really depends on the room it’s in. Some rooms are better with a curtain at 500Hz, some 300Hz, then others benefit more from full range correction. Unfortunately there just isn’t a one size fits all best way to go about, as each room and setup is going to different.
@HomeTheaterGamer thanks gamer for feed back...we bought two denon x6700...1 in a large room and 1 in a smaller room...bought the app for smaller room did all the settings, like mid comp off..curtains too 500 or 300 cudnt tell difference....ended up opening curtains and instead of reference we selected flat...it sounds lovely....as for the other denon x6700 in the larger room it has no app...its running on a 7.1.4 on reference..and that sounds good too...I'm not gona get the app for that...but only thing I have learned the bass on the sub is fairly low..my pioneer sclx 59 was way more bassy...the denon x6700 have a much cleaner and neater sound
Always glad to help if I can. Just FYI: you only need to buy this $20 phone and/or tablet app once. You can then use it on however many compatible Denon/Marantz receivers you want.
I got the android version for free. My phone is rooted so I can make a backup of any installed app. I purchased the app app from Google play. Made a quick backup and then hit on the refund button. The app was uninstalled and I got a refund. Then I used the backup of the apk to reinstall it. Now I have it for free...
