To be fair to Aulë, many other maiar fell to darkness too. Those are the Balrogs and other evil spirits. It sucks (for Aulë) that the only 2 we know by name are his'. The 7 Balrogs of Morgoth could very well be all from Manwë lol

I don’t blame Aule whatsoever. I’m sure he taught Sauron and Sauruman well and always advocated creating things for good purposes, not for selfish desires or to upstage anyone…. Unfortunately they were beings with minds and wills of their own and their pride over their accomplishments and skills made them arrogant and they felt that because of their great skills they could reshape and guide the world better than anyone else. Hence why Sauron chose to follow Morgoth to reshape the world without limit and why Sauruman wanted the ring to give him the power to defeat Sauron and take his place and remain superior in power over Gandalf, Radagast and the Blue Wizards.

I like to think that the reason why the Dwarves weren't nearly as corrupted as Men in the Second Age was due to the fact that they were made to be stubborn, resistant, and strong willed by Aule, Sauron's former master. A subtle showing of Aule's superiority in craft.

@nickalex4235 Also, not to mention that Aüle is also the patron, teacher, and friend to the Ñoldor Elves (2nd Elven clan of the 1st children of Eru). He thought the Ñoldor Elves how to craft and thought Fëanor the secrets of crafting that made Fëanor the greatest crafter and warrior. That which called him the "Spirit of Fire". Centuries later in both the 1st - 2nd age. The Ñoldor Elves have a strong relationship with the Drawves of the Blue from Belleriand (1st age) and the Drawves of Khazadum a.k.a Moria (2nd -3rd age), the time Eregion was established. Celebrimbor - the grandson of Fëanor befriended them - They thought and worked together. Both the Ñoldor Elves and the Drawves of Moria loved crafting, and they built the westgate made of mithril. The engraving of the gate was within in Sindarin, and 2 branches symbolises the "Lights of the 2 Trees of Valinor." After that, they made a trade route between the 2 kingdoms. The gate and the trade route is a sign of friendship that will never be forgotten till "The Sacking of Eregion." Quite amazing how Aüle has influenced his proteges. Too bad Aüle should have stopped his proteges of leaving Aman after the death of Finwë - 1st High King of the Ñoldor and the Darkening of Valinor. Another problem is his servants Mairon (A.K.A Sauron) and Saruman easily fall to the darkside. No wonder he didn't stop them.

In hindsight, Aule's traits would also manifest in his three most famous creations: In all of them, there was creativity and stubbornness. In Sauron and Saruman, there was the presumption that their craft was the best. His own hubris. But in Gimli, there was Aule's humility. The recognition of his limits and admiration of all creation from the Music of the Ainur.

I love that the Valar are inherently good, and yet they have character flaws that cause evil or mildly bad things to occur. Aulë is an undoubtedly loving Vala, very kind, humble, and quick to forgiveness. But so much so that he is quite naive when it comes to judging character. He completely overlooks the growing pride and greed of his servants and students, until it blows up in his face and they become vengeful monsters. I have to imagine he feels awful; all he wanted to do was teach the knowledge and craftsmanship that Eru gave him. At least he's got Yavanna to cheer him up; she seems like a good wife, and one of very few people, most of which are the other Valar, who are more in love with Aulë as a person than Aulë as a STEM instructor. With all that being said, Mahtan is an underappreciated Elf: he is Aulë's favorite Ñoldorin Elf; one of very few known *bearded* Elves; only known student of Aulë who doesn't betray him. Here's one great example of an Elf who didn't get carried away with his own ambitions and stayed true to his mentor, regardless of all the lies and propaganda goin on around him. Mahtan is the Perfect Ñoldo, the Ultimate Aulendil. Everyone should strive to be like Mahtan.

Since Aulë is Melkor's rival, I always imagined that some Maia spy passed on the information (of how Aulë created the dwarves) to Melkor. The creation of dwarves reminds me of Homunculus (artificial humans created from inanimate matter through alchemy) and the concept of the Golem from Jewish folklore (that its creator places a "piece of his soul" in the clay "doll"). Here comes the difference with Melkor: the Enemy "made" the Orcs in envy of Ilúvatar's power to create genuine life; Aulë made the dwarves out of love and eagerness to see Eru's children. The dwarves were rewarded by the breath of life, they ceased to be automatons and became the adopted children of God.
@Novusod
@Novusod Год назад
The Homunculus is not made from inanimate matter like rocks and clay. They are made from bird or salamander eggs fertilized with sperm from mammals including sometimes human sperm. Occasionally this would create a deformed fetus that would die very quickly. The creation of the Dwarves more closely resembles Golem lore and the warning God gave against making golems. A golem must never be allowed to speak for the moment it does then it shall be given a soul. Doing so was considered to be one of the most grave sins. Man playing "god" was strictly forbidden.

I think Sauron might even had a part in the destruction of the Two Lamps. He maybe knew that Aule used specific technique to make them and there was only one way to destroy that lamps and he spyed this to Melkor. It is not that likely because Tolkien didnt even envision that in the early drafts tho

Remembering, Melkor had to be quick after the destruction of the first lamp, as he would still go to the second. We should also point out that Melkor mostly got a second chance because Aule was one of the Valar that vouched for him. Between Sauron and Saruman falling to darkness, Feanor being an egotistical psycho that was only "good" in the sense that he hated Melkor as much as everyone else and Aule being one of the Valar to be like "I think Melkor learned his lesson", Aule judge of character is so bad, that's it's almost an unintentional running gag in the setting. At this point, every time Aule vouches for someone, Tolkien needs to smash cut to an "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" title card.

Hi Nerd, love your channel and all your videos, not a big fan of Amazon's sires tho, (only complaint if any.) Could you make a video on "The History of Dale"? I think it's a really cool Kingdom of Men and you could give it justice.

What's interesting is I am reminded of the binding of Isaac where Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his son upon YHWH's command. Because of his proof of loyalty, YHWH stays Abraham's hand and blesses him for his obedience. Aule was willing to destroy the Dwarves out of repentance to Iluvatar and as such, Iluvatar spared them. They aren't the same thing but nevertheless an interesting parallel, the loyalty of servant to master.

It's strange to me that Aule obviously created the dwarves because he wanted to teach them and be with them, etc., but Aule just stayed in Valinor for millennia and didn't bring any dwarves to Valinor. Quite a bit of separation there.

I always thought it odd that Aüle speaks to Illuvatar of sons mimicking fathers, since at the time there were NO FATHERS yet to be making that analogy about

Since all Ainur came from Ilúvatar's mind, they are His children in a way; and he also saw the Children of Ilúvatar within the vision Eru put in front of themselves. So, one of the Ainur using that analogy is not so odd

Yonks ago before the creator blasted it off the face of youtube, the silmarilion for noobs describes the difference between melkor and aule's desires as such Melkor: this is my money, I made it and its mine Aule: this is my cake, I made it, would you like some :D Aule derives enjoyment from the act of creation while melkor wishes to make possessions he can call solely his own, something the valar cannot do.

When reading so e of the compendiums of the LOTR, Aule has always come across as unsettled. I have found it somewhat ironic that 2 Maia that served Aule went rogue. First Sauron & then Saruman!

Definitely my go-to if I have to explain the Valar to less die-hard LOTR fans is that I equate them to the ancient Greek Gods and it's not hard to see why: Aule is basically the Greek God version of Hephaestus (Master Blacksmith) Ulmo is clearly the Greek God version of Poseidon (Lord of Waters) Mandos is the the Greek God version of Hades (Judge of the dead) I'm sure there are other equivalents, but those are the easy ones for sure!

Eru Illúvatar created the Ainur. The more powerful of the Ainur are known as the Valar, and the weaker ones became the Maiar. The Maiar were meant to serve the purposes of the Valar. The Valar were meant to serve Eru Illúvatar’s purpose. Hope this cleared things up!
@NerdoftheRings

Eru is like God. The Valar & Maiar are like gods (little g). Valar are mightier and higher than Maiar. Many Maiar serve/are associated with one or more of the Valar.
@fai-pe7oq
@fai-pe7oq Год назад
Eru created the Ainur, who are the Valar and Maiar. Together thru song, they created the world. The Valar were the greatest of the Ainur and represented the primary aspects of life and creation. The Maiar made up the rest of the Ainur. They served specific Valar based on what part they played in the creation of the world. Ex. Those Maiar whose sang about living and growing things came under Yavanna, the Valar tasked with the care of all living things, animals and plants, of the world.

I wonder if it's because Aule was the most like Melkor out of the rest of the Valar that it somehow contributed to two of his servants falling to evil (Sauron and Saruman).

So when Aule [sic!] wants to destroy the dwarfs, and they beg for mercy and so, it's really Aule [sic!] making them do that, because they don't have true life at that moment. Sick move to convince Illuvitar.

Now that I think about it, there is not much religious stuff going in in Middle Earth itself right? I mean specially for men and dwarfs, I cant really remember them worshippinig the Valar or other gods for that matter. Do they even know that the Valar exist? Elves should know I presume but also for them there's not a lot of worshipping going on right? Kinda weird if you think about it, since the Valar have so much (in)direct influence for instance through the wizards.
