the Kroot being Cannibals is not a new fact, it's been in Dawn of War both Dark Crusade and Soul Storm: Kroot can feast on corpses to increase their HP, in the assault of the Tau on the Deimos Peninsula (the Chaos Stronghold) the epilogue speaks of a number of Kroot Carnivores who feasted on Cultists and Heretics but were executed by their comrades because they were afraid to corrupt their gene pool. The Kroot are the closest thing to sentient Tyranids.

This fact that Kroot feed on their human opponents would be both horrifying and infuriating to Gaurd. I would imagine Gaurd would ( more than normal) hate and want to exterminate them with extreme prejudice. No I don’t think they would appreciate the compliment of Kroot wanting their DNA.

Strangely enough, on the "xenos we REALLY hate" list of the Imperium, Kroot are fairly far down. They have no aspirations of ruling the galaxy, aren't in huge enough numbers to be a valid threat to the Imperium, and on top of it all, the more independent operators of the Imperium (Inquisitors, Rogue Traders) hire kinbands as mercs. The Kroot don't care, long as their paycheck clears and there's meat to be had.

I feel like instead of doing the whole mind control gimmick with the tau that they ended up going with they should have just leaned into the T'au having shady dealings with less the savory alien civilizations, it would be a lot more thematicly appropriate and would lend itself to allowing for more obscure aliens making their way into being represented in the hobby through the t'au as a faction. Despite being the faction for it there isn't really a way to play a mixed race t'au army officially even though they are known to make alliances as their bread and butter.

I think the biggest problem with the current Tau is that GW refuses to tell the community if the Tau empire are "secretly" evil or just naive to the extreme. I prefer the naive to the extreme rather than the evil plot line. The secretly evil idea for me doesn't hold water when the same can be said with more evidence against the imperium because both factions do horrible things to survive but the imperium is more extreme.
@Tulkash01
@Tulkash01 Год назад
It’s pretty clear that by far and large the Tau believe in the greater good, BUT at the same time the Ethereals are callous and shady, and they are willing to do nasty things to ensure the Tau’s ascendance. As soon as you read about the Farsight enclaves you understand how the Ethereals and the Tau as a whole don’t necessarily share the same agenda

@@Tulkash01 but we see in those very same novels, it shows that farsight may not agree completely with the etherals, he understands why they do the things they do. Additionally, all etherals are not on board with the current etheral agenda. We see this with Aun'Shi, who was captured because he wanted to convince Farsight to return to the fold. I just don't think the Etherals plan is all that evil when you compare it to other factions, its more naive to be honest.
@Tulkash01
@Tulkash01 Год назад
@@markhohenbrink5230 in relative terms the Ethereals’ plan is certainly not worse than the Imperium’s fanaticism and Chaos’ nihilistic agenda (if not senseless slaughter). But the point is they present themselves as good and altruistic… and they are not. As for some Ethereals not knowing the full extent of the omit caste’s plans, it simply makes sense some’ or perhaps even most of them may believe their own propaganda, with only their higher ups being aware of the despicable actions needed to ensure Tau’s ascendance
@12SickOne34
@12SickOne34 Год назад
Evil, especially in the context of 40k, is a somewhat vage term, isn't it? Relatively speaking they'd be still the least evil of all factions even if the Etherals are actually using mind control pheromones.

I would really like to see how the Tau interact with the Nissicar and their 'mind science'. Get a better feeling for what it is they are doing to understand the strange abilities other species possess - and how much they may or may not respect the Nissicar's traditions . . . . like do they try to force the Nissicar to train human pyskers, or are they so protective of their Empire's best scouts that they don't even let humans know that the Nissicar exist just in case they turn against the Tau. On the table top, it would be interesting if the Nissicar did appear as something very similar in function as the Guard's Navigator units - - - but with more of a focus on movement support rather than a proper Smite.

While the Corsair Eldar in Battlefleet Gothic got me into the 40k setting in the first place, the very first army I ever collected was a Kroot Mercenary army back in 3rd edition when they and the Catachans were the only ones who could see and shoot further than 8 inches into forested terrain. That was a great army. Not a power house but you could give them weapons and gear which they either looted from fallen enemies or were paid with by previous employers. I think that the Kroot are one of the most alien feeling xenos factions in the setting that we see with any kind of regularity (more than a one-off that is). Their weird cultural practices are firmly rooted in practicality and necessity by their physiology. I've always liked that. Also, I think the Rogue Trader RPG supplement which came out with rules to play a sanctioned Kroot were on the mark: You could choose what kind of selective feeding/breeding your character was a byproduct of and so could choose between being a bigger greener Kroot (from eating Orks), a Kroot that can actively camoflage itself, a Kroot that was venomous, and more. A Kroot army absolutely should be able to choose what evolutionary gains they've chosen similar to chapter traits and the like.

I would love to see a story which explains why the kroot have not taken Astartes DNA and made a big ol' plethora of them. Maybe the geneseed is hard to digest, the marines are too difficult to secure as food source, or there is something in the genes that activates a kill-switch when it merges with non-human DNA. But I would also like to see a kroot that, either with the cooperation of Tau black ops scientists or because it has the right genetic mutations, was able to successfully take in Astartes DNA and now we have a super kroot that could be the start of the Tau's own Astartes program.

Personally I’ve always prefer the angle that the T’au are just super naive good guys, it’s a good contrast to the Imperium’s grim darkness and makes the Imperium’s grim dark hit that much harder. That and well as Rho said it’s part of the Kroot’s culture and if the T’au are more than happy to allow humans under their banner to keep worshipping the Emperor as a God- something the T’au think is silly superstition- then kroot’s evolution via consumption seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to allow. It’s how they grow after all. As for the kroot though there are so many things worse than them eating the dead. Heck space marines do it as well but you don’t hear people go about saying they are deprived and represent a darker side of the Imperium. 😂

I think the kroot and to a lesser extent the vespids need a rework the kroot being savage cannibals doesn't fit with the tau who are one of the more civilized factions in 40k I'm surprised the tau haven't "fixed" them yet

I've not read or listened to a good tau novel. Its all they moved to the flank and gunned their enemies down. They fell back and shot at their enemies and the occasional tau beating anything up in combat. I'm just not feeling it.

I'd love to see the kroot leave the tau for their own pirate style campaign which leads to ork, tyrannid, aeldari etc variants. The kroot leaving the tau could then lead to the tau adopting more closer combat units

That's already a thing. Plenty of kindred out there selling themselves as hired guns to anyone who can pay. Kroot pirates are a thing, and many a Rogue Trader or Inquisitor has a Kroot kindred in their bodyguard retinue. Also, tyranid is off the menu, and even the pirate kroot abide by that rule.

Man, the GW must think they can really market the Tau to keep giving them such plot armor. Every time an Imperial force goes against them it's undermanned and lacking firepower. I can't wait to see what reason GW comes up with for why they aren't a stain on Guilliman's boot by now. He could @#$ a force that could mop up the Tau and those scumbag kroot. The Abyssal Crusade is just one example of how the Imperium has wasted forces that could turn the Tau worlds into Ghost Moons, yet somehow are too strapped for resources to beat the Tau.
