I love those little things. Hated them as a kid! But love them now and all those wonderful things which remind me of the halcyon days of youth and boyhood. Dammit..
Cant wait ben. When i was 17 me and my mate dave built a good engine out of 3 engines then went on holiday in it. We never had any money for new parts just bought a gasket set stripped all 3 down and used the best bits. Did about 2000 miles only wiper motor broke. Happy days. It was an 1100.
Ben, nooooooooo!!!!! These things rusted for fun when they were nearly new! Mums first car and I remember her telling me how she had to repair holes with mesh and glass fibre (fibreglass?!?) when it was 5 years old. And this one’s lived in Wales. You’re a brave, brave man.
Lot of love in the comments for those cars. A well sorted example was comfortable, nippy, economical and handled well. Dad had a beautiful white 1100 that I got to drive at 18. He was so please with it he bought a 1300 which he had to scrap 3 months later. So looking forward to the vid Ben!
My Father had the GT version with hydroelestic suspension. He loved that car, many a happy holiday in it, and no breakdowns! Though I do remember yelling a few times when getting in after the black vinyl seats had been in the sun for a few hours 😆
When I was a young lad at Patrick Motors, serving my apprenticeship as a Panel Beater back in the 70,s, I could change 2 wings, front panel and bonnet in a morning on a 1100. Monday morning we would have atleast 4 waiting to be fixed. Last one in the paint shop bought the beer on Friday!!
What a tease. My mum had Gerty when I was little. A G reg very dark green that looked black Austin 1100. My big sister passed her test and got herself an orange 1300Gt with a rev counter and a vinyl roof. I thought it was soooo sporty. She threw it upside down into a field within a year.
My mum had a blue 1100. It was brilliant, apart from the rust. It was that bad that the handbrake came away in her hand so she had to hold it on the foot brake when on hills.
Had a 1973 1300GT back in 1978. Gearbox went so stuck another box from an 1100 which gave the car a little better performance. Sold it after the steering rack decided it no longer wanted to be attached to the bulkhead due to rust. 70s cars were rusting before they left the showroom
Bring it on mate.lol I found your channel by chance with the Mondeo, now im working my way through the videos and loving them. These Austins and Morris` were part of my childhood so I do have a bit of love for them, things were so much simpler, not necessarily better, back in them days.Being squashed between 2 adults in the back seat on days out. 😆
We had an Austin A40 when I was a bairn, brilliant wee thing, six of us in the back, maw and da up front luggage in boot and roof rack, away we went on our holidays 😂😂😂fantastic days
I had an ‘F’ reg 1100 back in the early 70’s. Not many problems......until it rained! Had to bail water out on the passenger side while I could paddle on my side.
Wales has always been a good source of classic cars needing restoration, it also used to have loads of resourceful scrapyards but sadly most of them have gone now.
When they took these across the pond to sell in the US, they were really very imaginative with naming them, such a unique and well-thought out name, they called them the, **ahem**, Austin America........... :P
that was the first car that I ever had was one of those but it was the estate version or was it the state version can't remember lol It was great when it rained because it filled the drivers foot well 😅😅 another tasty classics adventure one man in a barn 😮
This is going to be a real treat. I remember these so well from my youth, awesome little cars. It's just a shame that they were so, er, water soluble.....
😮Well Ben this should be another excellent video but it will surprise me if this one ever sees the road I should imagine it’s well ripe but yes I can’t wait to watch 🎉🎉🎉🎉
These used to overheat and the suspension fall down on one side or the other 😁 we had both the austin and the Morris, both very old at the time, brings back memories of whiny gearboxes as well 😊👍🇮🇪
My Dad had 2 of these in the early 80s when i was a child, one the same colour as the mustard ish one and and a white one. Unfortunately cannot remember the registration of either of them as i was quite young
These used to be the most regular visitors to my lift for welding hated them at the time in the 70s remember that in the rear wheel arch on the petrol tank side is a large bit of foam remove it before welding sill as it will catch fire plus check under both front wings as the suspension cone welded to the inner flich rust away and the rear sub mounting area but good luck buddy
My parents had several of these things in the 70’s and 80’s, hated them with a passion. Next door neighbour had a Reliant Scimitar! Every year they cost a fortune to weld up and then they got a Vanden Plas and tried to tell me it was posh. It wasn’t it was just a 1100 with wood added inside and it still went rotten. They all had good bodywork but all the box sections were rotten. There was an advert on tv about a poor driver who was really bad and, yes, he drove an 1100! Even Basil Fawlty thrashed one with a branch.
The 2-door version had a starring role in the film "Clockwise", as well as a certain episode of "Fawlty Towers". John Cleese must have really liked those cars....
Rusty old UK. I've still got my Datsun 77 240k here in Australia,I bought in 1988.99. 9% rust free. I really like watching you're show very much though.
I always wanted one for some strange reason but went from my reliant reagle to a Morris marina lol 🤣, very similar though as both rotted like an early nissan 😮😂
You are our version of Vice Grip Garage 😂, this is very brave of you ! My mate had one back in the 80’s ! Failed on rot under the back seat back then 😂 , we used to go to college in it, looked slightly better than this one 😂
