It's a shame the FFA don't release Australia's 1974 World Cup matches on DVD, I feel it's an important part of our soccer heritage which has been long forgotten. Overath's goal from outside the box is just a marvel to watch... What a strike!!

Mein Vater kam etwas später von der Arbeit und sagte so etwas wie "Ich wünsche Overath ein Tor," Er hatte sich kaum gesetzt, da schoß Overath das 1:0. I can still remember it clearly. As a schoolboy, I was there when the whistle blew. My father came home from work a little later and said something like "I wish Overath a goal," He had hardly sat down when Overath scored the 1:0.
The 1974 World Cup matches for Australia are a copyright nightmare. The ABC did English commentary but in black and white. ZDF did German commetary but in color. Ideally, one would have English audio with color video for a DVD set!
Abonyi was close to getting a goal for Australia. To have taken even a single goal off West Germany: that would have been like winning the World Cup for us. It wasn't until the 1980s that the Socceroos started to challenge good teams.
IF Ray Bartz had not been callously injured during a build up game against Uruguay some 3 months earlier,Australia would not have returned home goalless.
