The west german football federation wears prussian colors because it actually dates back to 1900. The east german football federation meanwhile was a modern product of the GDR
Joseph Stalin but similiar enough to reunite, the eastern and westerb parts were always different in culture and behavior but in the end we are all germans.
+niko 2064 Well, northern and southern germany are also completely different. But still germany manged to unite because they identify as the same people with the same roots and the same ancestors. But technically austria, parts of switzerland and the netherlands also have german ancestors but identify as completely different nations these days. Identity is a fragile and short-living thing and people should care very much about it, otherwise unity becomes seperatism, which will eventually lead to rivalry and maybe even wars. We should value those which share the same identity as we do.
Werner Schneyder vom ZDF. Sicher kein schlechter Reporter in seiner Zeit.
Presse sprecher Werner Schneider. Mit i.
One more thing, keep in mind the rivalry between the west and the east. That 74 West Germany team was arguably the best Germany team ever, they were playing home in Hamburg. The LAST thing they wanted to do was lose to "those communists," Again, football was not a top pirority for Die DDR government, they were big on Olympic sports. Imagine if they had some proper governent funding, how good this team could have been? They had individual talent, as mentioned before like Sparwarsser who scored in the 71'. They also lost in the olympics again and back then they used natioal teams. If you lose once that is an accident, if you lose twice that is a trend. Look at Die Mannschaft's roster Beckenbauer and Muller up front, they should have slaughtered Die DDR.
Alemania Oriental 1-0 Alemania Occidental".
Very good commentary.Im from Romania and commentaries like that were the norm back then especially since many games were broadcasted mostly at the radio. European and Worldcups were not televised in the Communist Block with the exception that if the communist team was playing and then only those games that the team played and not the whole Cup. Only at the radio was broadcasted more games.
That was a shock defeat for West Germany but a blessing in disguise as well.If West Germany had beaten their cousins East Germany they would have topped the group. That means being grouped together with favourites Holland,Argentina and Brazil. That was precisely why manager Helmut Shoen deliberately thrown the match away. It was strategy at work as finishing as runnersup would mean that the home team would be grouped together with Sweden,Poland and Yugoslavia. It was Juergen Sparwasser's goal that separated the two teams.
Losing this match surely helped them, as they avoided Netherlands up until the final (Brazil and Argentina were nothing special in this tournament). But, first of all, they still had to face Poland that was on fire then, argueably more threat than Brazil and Argentina (Poland even beat them both in that tournament) so it wasn't that much of an easy group, and second of all - I would believe them deliberately throwing the game to any team but East Germany - loss to them was a huge blow propaganda-wise, good for them they quickly blurred it by winning the whole World Cup, if they didn't, GDR loss would be awful.
Also, Yugoslavia drew with Brazil and annihilated Zaire 9-0. They weren't considered an easy opponent before second group stage, even though they eventually lost all 3 games there
Since Germany is reunited I have been in the east side of Berlin and find they are friendly to Americans. Politicians are to blame for a lot of the problems in the world and hate generated in the world along with the news media.
I was going to say why wouldn't they? It's not like the people from the east were like "fuck this place!" and chose to break off to start their own country a la the South in the American Civil War. If I had to guess there probably wasn't that much genuine hostility between the two sides, hence the reason people were happy when the country reunified a decade-and-a-half later.
this was a first game in tournament. and if you think east and west germany would fix a game together i suggest you google: berlin wall. it will lead you to many interesting things
@@nichderjeniche No I didn't. The STASI agent "Gromek" in Hitchcock's "Torn Curtain" and Sir Alec Guinness and Tom Courtnay's characters wore the same kind I'm talking about in "Dr Zhivago" (1966 and 1965, respectively)
I get the impression that the (west) Germans were quite happy to let the GDR win as they found themselves in an easier group than their eastern counterparts in the second round
Notice how the BRD is being referred to using "GER" while the DDR remains written that way. "GER" obviously means Germany, the country itself and not its state, while DDR refers to the state and not the country. This is a subtle way to attack DDR's legitimacy by identifying BDR with Germany itself. Very insulting to the Germans from DDR.
Hardly. It was like that for every match West Germany played in this tournament. And even if it wasn't the DDR was a murderous police state so who cares.
@@valveda1160 Hello im from east germany, I guess I just had a bad dream when I lived under communism, right?! We loved it so much, that we fleed the country and we went on the streets to end it... And no other country had more secret service spies per citizen (1 spy per 100 citizen), that's a world record!
Good observation, although rarely noticed. The whole situation was so awkward. Always. Both sides were equally german, as german as you could possibly get. Politicians were trying to condemn and cherish the eastern part at the same time. Just to please their "allies" and not lose their jobs
The Germans deliberately took it easy and didn't mind losing to avoid the stronger second round group. In the same way Holland played for a draw against Scotland in 1978 knowing that it or a narrow defeat (which they got) would see then through to the weaker second round group.
To me it seem that the younger brothers let there eldest brothers won with respect becoz they knew that they are one & someday they will be one & unite again as one Big Great Nation.
I think West Germany lost on purpose to avoid Holland and Brazil (Argentina wasn't strong back then). Maier threw himself down and strangely rolled over before Sparwasser struck the ball! It's probably the same reason why Argentina lost to Italy in their last group match in 78: They wanted to avoid W Germany and Holland.
Buona vita a tutti.
@@giuliogrifi7739 come on man! Argentina was just lucky against Italy, anyway wasn't penalty for Germany in the final and all stadium was supporting German team remeber what Italians did during Argentina's anthem

Due to political conflict between East and West Germany, as a fan of West German side, I really did not want East to come West side. Instead I really want Romania to replace East but it did not work.
well well well Sep Mayer pratically turn back when Sparswasser kick the ball in the goal....the real thing was: Brazil and Netherlands were on same group next round..Argentina was on the way playing day after....East Germany had lost friendly matches against Brazil and Argentina at home in 1973...Netherlands had all Ajax team....what a confort result this 0-1 result would be !! ....and getting Yugoslavia, Sweden and Poland next group.
The commentator was stiff like elephant shit and the GDR-players went strait to their locker room without saying tanks after the end whizzle. I hate the communists and other left wingers. But in this game : Good work DDR.
Is there any truth in the story that after british progressive rock band Barclay James Harvest played a concert against the Berlin Wall , thousands of East Germans threw away their wire - cutters and shovels ? 🏴😇❤️ from Wessex
World Football Cup och bin Deutsche, Russie, und Die mannschaft. Dankeschon, My family was in Die DDR and BDR. I am German Russian American. The anthem was Auferstanden aus Ruinen" or Rise from Ruins by Haans Eisler. If the Soviet economy would have collapsed in the 70s instead of the 80s, most of die DDR players would have been playing in the bundesliga. Lyrics to "Auferstanden aus ruien" Auferstanden aus Ruinen Und der Zukunft zugewandt, La uns dir zum Guten dienen, Deutschland, einig Vaterland. You wish I am German Sparwarsser won it and this was not a fluke because in the Olympics, they also beat West Germany. Sometimes teams just stack up well against you, West Germany had a losing record to East Germany, Die DDR. Football was like the 15th most popular sport in East Germany, they did it without much government support. The East German government was all about the Olympics. They did it with pure talent and if the Soviet economy would have collapsed in the 70s instead of the 80s, most of those guys on DIe DDR would have been playing in the bundesliga, that was a good team with individual talent but not much government support, give them the respect they deserve.
Mi K Then why when East Germany Won the Olympic Gold in 1976 That Never got transferred to Germany? It says Germany's best result was Silver But No Gold is registered
@@Darkscenes-jp4ge Very good queston and not easy to answer, or not entirely logical. I also have many of such questions. But all 6 were from the GDR (DDR), and all 6 were doped!!! A a matter of fact, Gina Lückemkemper is the fastest German from the FRG and also the fastest clean German ever. East German really wanted to either escape or move to West side but East German government security staffs always accompany 24-7. Meaning not easy to escape from security staffs.
