Age brings experience, experience brings maturity, maturity brings stability. Many professions need qualification and experience both to become an expert for eg. Teachers. Young age of 35 brings opportunistic nature. Means once the target is achieved majority of them will leave the field and will move somewhere else with better future. 45 is the perfect age, even in some fields it should be upto 50.

I just graduated with a PhD a few months ago and I agree with the raised point - the government invested close to $250k in my education, and is now ready to kick out people like us. My research was in digital health, which will only grow in importance in the coming years, but we’re apparently only seen as a burden. PhD students are expected to conduct high quality research and present their findings in international forums, and that’s not even considered as skilled work for skills assessment. So what exactly does the government mean when they say they need “skilled people”?

Hi, I am one of the international students affected by the new 485 age limit. Thanks for your video that lets me I know that there is still hope. I was already over 40 years old when I was thinking about getting a master's degree somewhere, I made the decision to come to study in Australia partially because I can accumulate overseas working experience here via the post-study working visa. With the money, time and efforts and everything that I invested into my education here, I just felt so helpless, so frustrated, and started to question my decision to come here, when the Australian government suddenly closed the door of 485 visa for me, when I'm just one year away from my graduation. I hope there will be amends to this policy, and all the best to all the fellow students who are affected by this policy, and thank you so much for sharing all the information with us!

I really feel for those individuals stressed over the 485. The same ideology is applied to applicants to permanency visas, or those aged 45yo or over. You don’t qualify, and only option is to seek a TSS482 skilled migrant for 4yrs. But no longer qualify for transitional arrangement to permanency on that. Seriously. Are the Australian Government openly stating at aged 35, 45. Your to old work, to study, to contribute to the economy in meaningful ways. When you still have anywhere between 20-30 years of working age left in you before retirement. It’s shockingly agest and highly discriminatory. Where I’m from it would even be illegal.

I am currently in the final semester of my Master of Data Science program. Our final results will be released on July 8, but the new transition for the 485 visa age limit will apply from July 1. This means that, just for one week, people like me will lose the opportunity to gain job experience after working hard to pass university courses and earn our degrees. It is unfair because we were not aware of this new rule when we started our studies two years ago.

Honestly the proposed changes should have happened 10 years ago. But because of how drastic this is, it largely disadvantages new students and existing visa holders already onshore. Because why would anyone allow >550K people into the country in 1 FY when you already know there's a housing crisis? To boost the economy and stimulate the property market (that's literally it). It's also unfair to new students and immigrants who were obviously unaware how bad the rental market truly is. But it came at the expense of disadvantaging young Australian graduates and any first home buyers. It's not fair to these groups who are now more anti-immigrant than I've ever seen them before. A country should protect its citizens first and clearly the government has learned from how a mismanagement of immigration has led to a lower quality of life in Canada. So I understand these changes but because of how radical they are, I sympathise towards prospective migrants.
@HyperIndian

@@Dakar-c3f Technical recession, sure - immigration prevented that. But we're living in a recession per capita (meaning more people - especially the average person - is living a more financially difficult life today than 5 years ago). The issue at hand concerns the misuse of student visas in Australia. Unfortunately, some individuals are taking advantage of these visas as a means to enter the country with the primary goal of living and working here, rather than pursuing education This misuse affects the integrity of the student visa system. To address this issue, we must implement stricter regulations and enforcement measures surrounding student visas. By doing so, we can ensure that these visas are used for their intended purpose of education rather than as a backdoor entry to the job market. This will not only protect the integrity of our immigration system but also safeguard the interests of our citizens and the strength of our economy.

What do you think about the PhD students who are usually starting their PhD in their 30s? These PhDs are certainly serious about their academic life and have measured the pros and cons of their study only to have the door slammed to their face without having the chance to pursue a postdoc and building a research portfolio. These students got caught in the crossfire because some people misuse the student visa?

I will most definitely not complete my PhD before July and being above 35 years, I am deeply concerned by the current immigration news of not issuing us TR to stay work here. In that case, I will have go back home. My two sons are studying here for the last 5 years and will struggle to continue study back home since they are out of touch with our language for these many years. Further, I have done very relevant research concerning the housing crisis and was hoping to contribute to addressing the ongoing crisis. And I have studied on the University scholarship which means it would be a total loss to Australia to send me back after spending so much on me and making me capable of doing something extremely helpful to the ongoing housing crisis. I am in complete stress because of the recent news and hopelessly hoping for some miracles to happen and give some sense to those involved in bringing out this kind of unrealistic and unfathomable policies. Sorry to be blunt but when someone comes to study in Australia there is an expectation to return back once studies are finished. International students write this on their application - I want to study *** so I can get a job back in my country etc. Rules can change at any time including working hours and post study work rights etc. I agree exceptional students such PhD should stay no matter age but there are just too many students who have ruined the system and there is a high chance post study working rights will be wound back. What Australians are seeing is huge congestion and massive rental increases and the finger pointing is directly at international students, it’s the non genuine ones who should be expediently told to leave as they have ruined the social license for international students in Australia.

disagree, International students, particularly mature ones with valuable skills and experience, play a significant role in our society. As a country Australia needs to prioritize Australian citizens and youth in the housing and jobs market. We can’t continue having these record rent increases going forward and demand for rentals from international students is placing immense pressure on the affordable rental market. Also international students in the USA have limited opportunity in accessing jobs market, we are extremely generous in Australia.

Agree. Imagine there are students who do not care about education and spend most of their student visa working and making minimum effort in studying. Then run out of time and apply for a 485 extension and do another study just for the sake of PR without genuinely studying. Interesting that you say exceptional students such as PhDs should be able to stay, because with these proposed changes nearly 50% of post-grad research students will be impacted (Masters + PhD). Since PhDs are generally older than Masters, it's very likely that even more than 50% of PhD students will be impacted. So the government is selectively excluding their most skilled migrants with this change. Not to mention those who have received government scholarships, which can total more than $250,000 of taxpayer money. The public is investing in their education and then the government is removing all means of getting a return on that investment. Insane.

@@rl2388it’s not a human rights issue, its a policy implemented by the Australian government outlying the rules the and conditions to which them deem appropriate for the best interest of the country! There is no obligation from the Australian government to provide people over 35 with further stay conditions like the 485 visa once their studies are concluded. The person has agreed to come to Australia for the sole purpose of studying and in return will receive a degree/certificate of their completion. This automatic assumption that any further stay or automatic pathway to PR is going to be given just because an individual has spent money studying in the country does not equate to a human rights issue I completely agree that the government should have been more transparent with their imposition much earlier and I agree that they should allow people a transition period for those who began their studies prior to the implementation of this age restriction! Though what I completely agree with is removing individuals who are using the Australia education system as a guise with no intention of genuine studies, using the 485 visa as a alternate pathway to PR, as type of individual this does not benefit Australia or the Australian people

I hav3 a son at Uni and the general feed back I hear from students is they get thrown in group activities with migrants students who can’t speak English well. It's ridiculous, that 485 visa was caped in maximum age 35 while it's temporary one, same as other temporary work visas. So, the justification that "people will contribute in society longer" of that change sounds inconsistent and crazy. They will contribute exactly while visa lasts. Furthermore, it completely unfair to the people already pursuing degrees studying local norms to get local experience. It is torture for those who are already here and have planned their future, invested money in local education, to understand that they now have been exploited, scapegoated, and will be kicked out.
