So cool to see you check out Autechre! (Pronounced "aw tech err", I believe) Within the "Big 3" of IDM are Aphex, BoC, and Autechre. I've been a huge fan of Aphex and BoC for nearly a decade now, but Autechre always intimidated me... Over the past 3-4 years however, I've become deeply engrossed into their work. They have such a unique sound, and are savants of the sonic medium. I now listen to them as much as I do with Aphex and BoC, and I'm so glad to see more people listening to their work! I'd highly recommend checking out other albums of theirs if you want more IDM/Braindance-y greatness. I'd probably recommend their first album "Incunabula", second album "Amber", sixth album "Confield", and eleventh album "Exai". There's no bad choices when it comes to ae. Wonderful content as always, Smags :) Keep on keepin' on
Oh yeah, if you're into that style of abstract electronic music, you're in for a great time with Autechre. They're OGs of IDM scene, next to names like Aphex Twin, BoC, Squarepusher, u-Ziq, etc.... Tri Repetae is one of their most popular LPs, great pick for a start. Awesome that you reacted to it, I've enjoyed it. I highly suggest checking more of their albums, each one is a unique experience.
A friend gave me this record, said before I made an opinion I had to listen to it 5 times. Every time I listened, I heard new things, what sounded complex became simple, and opened up new complexity. 50+ times later, still hearing new things.
night time swimming to Stud, I like that. And yeah you can really start anywhere in the discog, no es importa. My first foray into the Autechres was to load their entire current discog onto a special Autechre only mp3 player and just have it on random. It ended up becoming the soundtrack of that summer!
You've done BoC, Aphex and Æ so I recommend Mu-ziq - Lunatic Harness, Squarepusher - Big Loada and Plug - Drum N Bass For Papa to cover the other biggest names in IDM from back in the day
I found this album so boring in my first listen, but then i became addicted forever. If you want to hear more autechre, there is the album "LP5", that was my 2nd introduction to IDM music. Usually people believe that "Amber","Tri Repetae" and "LP5" are the go-to introductions to autechre. I love how you are so open-minded to new stuff. Keep up the good work brother
One of the most innovative artists of our time - electronic or otherwise. Early albums are mellow and melodic. Second album "Amber" is my fave from that era. Later albums get gradully more abstract and experimental. LP5, Confield, and Untilted are my favourites there.
Hey Smags. Being relatively new to your channel but having watched quite a bit of your content, i really appreciate how wide a variety of genres you touch. That being said i would love to see you review something completely left of center, particularly the album "Lifeblood" by Brand of Sacrifice. It is intense, heavy and wild. At the absolute minimum i think it would generate a truly interesting reaction video. Love your vids ❤
Bass on 'Clipper'? I'd use the 'Generate' synth by Newfangled Audio...it's the bomb for fizzy basses. The monophonic version is free, but I've forgotten what it's called.
I think this is my favourite of Autechre's "easier" albums. I do quite like the high pitched sounds that lurk somewhere on the border of perception though. Pretty curious what you'd think about other albums of theirs, like "Draft 7,30", "Untilted" (sic), or "Exai". Other suggestions by other artists: "Autoditacker" by Mouse on Mars (electronica, IDM-adjacent I'd say, a bit more silly/playful), "Sunset Mission" by Bohren & der Club of Gore (dark / doom jazz, very slow, ambient, atmospheric), and "Universal Sprache" by Vladimir Bozar 'n' ze Sheraf Orkestär (eclectic genre mash-up, very silly, also french).
Crazy good choice for reaction! Squarepusher - Midi Sans Frontieres (Avec Batterrie) as a single + some album next is a must! Can't stop listening to this masterpiece...
Yo Smags, love the reactions. The next time you're in the mood for some shoegaze-y dream pop with some noise and glitchy electronic elements I think you should definitely check out Yeule - Softscars. It's rated #17 on RYM for 2023 and it's one of my favorites. Favorite tracks for me are xwx, sulky baby, softscars, ghosts, dazies, inferno, and cyber meat.
Yeeeees. Fucking excellent album and one of my first introductions to WARP when it released. Blew my mind. Really hope you go down further into the WARP catalogue...Plaid: Double Figure is a must listen.
id recommend doing lp5 then confield, lp5 is still grounded but starting to go weird, and then confield is when shit hits the fan. from there id do draft 7.30 and untilted if you like what you heard on confield, then prolly exai and then after that elseq 1-5 and nts sessions 1-4 is generally the progression id go for in the ae discog
Autechre's later stuff is super different from their early work, I would recommend Exai as a gateway into their newer more experimental stuff. LP5 is also a really accessible album from them that sounds like a bridge between stuff this album and what they would do later
I'm surprised someone told you this isn't a good place to start. It's probably their most accessible album. This one or maybe Amber/LP5. Personally I love them but their later stuff is an acquired taste for sure. Try Confield or Exai if you want to jump into the deep end with them
Please react to "Clics Modernos" by Charly García. It's a great rock and new wave album that was released on 1983 and at that time the usage of electronic drum machines in rock music was new and exciting. The artist confesses that Prince got influenced by his music.
for something in their catalog a little less calculated whit crazier sound design id check out exai! its my fav album by them. loved the reaction as usual
Would you be open to Boards of Canada’s smaller EPs? Like Twoism, Hi Scores, and In a Beautiful Place Out In the Country. I think there’s a lot of unique content there
go plastic by squarepusher is a hell of listen, and one that’s a bit different that i think you should react to is the drift by scott walker, such an insane album
Please do an orbital - In sides reaction, one of the greatest electronic albums of all time and don’t see it get any attention in the reactions side of RU-vid
11:24 Stud is my favorite track off this album for the simple reason of being so energetically soulless. A true oxymoronic song. Melancholic, curious, yet too Energetic. 19:18 Overand is 2nd because it’s cold, frozen, hopeless, barely beating with its faint percussion. One of the few songs along with stud that has induced a sense of powerlessness in me.
Not related but you should listen to hex by bark psychosis. It’s an amazing ambient post rock album (somewhere between talk talk and air) and im sure it would take you away imediatly.
wow! and now tri rep this week! I am about to watch but i suspect you're not going to love it much! this jarred the landscape of electronic music when it came out. autechre's listenship was increasing around this time and it pumped many surprised brains in '95. pivotal stuff for electronic music.
If you want to visit another planet, check out The Orb's album "Orbus Terrarum". A divisive work for fans, but undeniably unique, and I think you would enjoy it.
Great album! Although I prefer their album “amber.” Still waiting for you to check out ų-Ziq (also sometimes written Mu-Ziq). Lunatic Harness or Magic Pony Ride.
I love Autechre but their stuff is not as easy to connect with as Aphex Twin's or Boards of Canada's. They never really had a masterpiece on the level of SAW 85-92 and MHtRtC either. This one's generally regarded as their most popular and I'd say it bridges a nice gap between their more conventional earlier sound and the more experimental style they pursued going forward. So I'd say it's a fine place to start. My favourite of theirs is Confield which is very cold and bleak. Probably not something you'll enjoy much but I think it'll make for a good reaction. If you ever decide to do more Autechre in the future, your next one has to be Amber. It's the album preceding this one but it sounds noticeably different. A lot less glitch and a lot more ambient techno. For that reason, it'll result in a more enjoyable listening experience for you overall even if the highlights perhaps aren't as high as here Other electronic music recommendations: Squarepusher - Hard Normal Daddy (imo, he's the 4th most important IDM musician after Aphex Twin, BoC and Autechre, and Hard Normal Daddy is generally regarded as his best album) Justice - Cross (2nd best electronic music band from France - after Daft Punk, of course - and their newest album is coming next week!) Jon Hopkins - Immunity (has some incredible chill house/IDM tracks that you're bound to love)
YOOOO NEVER THOUGHT U WOULD CHECK THIS OUT AE are so sick, I don't listen to them as much as I used to but their whole discography is a super fun ride. edit: just finished vid. if you do want to check out more of their stuff I'd recommend starting with Incunabula. not because it's their 1st album but because I can actually see you liking that one a lot more. Tri Repetae is a very stagnant album and is definitely not for people starting out, Incunabula moves about a lot more and has much more emotion. keep up the great vids bro 🔥🔥
Yes, check out their whole discography and upload videos!!! Very worth it. They've only gotten more challenging as they release music. Go in chronological order after this one.
Hey smags im a bit late on the posts but maybe if ur reading this you should listen to king krule 6 feet beneath the moon like right now and also maybe do a reaction to that album
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS MY GUY a few recommendations: Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Nurture - Porter Robinson (light summer electric with fun production) Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) OIL OF EVERY PEARLS UN-INSIDES - SOPHIE (experimental electronic) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
