I watched this video and cooked ackee and saltfish for the first time for bae and he thinks I’m the best chef ever! You’re detailed and real and your steps are easy to follow... you will forever be in my kitchen ... with your authentic Jamaican style
Hi Miss Debbie, I found your channel this morning and I'm now on video #7. I think I'm gonna binge on you today. You are hilarious. You make me realize how much I miss my mom. Your food looks nice.
Whenever my grandmother would make this dish she would serve rice or dumplings. I would literally be circling the pot waiting for it to be finished. Thank you for speaking on the saltfish to ackee ratio and proportion. It's very important. Thank you so much. This is comfort food for me.
I've been watching your channel for nearly a year I think. You are the most authentic Jamaican cook i have seen so far. I had some fresh ackee in my freezer for over a year and a half. I didn't know how they were going to taste. I followed your directions to the tee and my ackee and saltfish came out absolutely delicious! Thank you for the clear instructions. Also I was going to add fresh tomatoes but didn't because you discouraged it. I'm glad I didn't add them. Thank you again!!👍🏽👊🏽
Ackee is my favorite dish and all this time I taught I knew how to make it but as they say your never to old to learn. .thanks again keep on doing your thing. .bless.
I LOVE the video! I been cooking a very long time and had forgotten all about this dish! When I was a child I burnt out 4 easy bake ovens, I had cooking fever so bad! I got my first dishes and cooking set at 5 months of age from my Uncle Pearson! He knew what to by me. It got so bad, that my Mom called my grandmother, who said put her in a chair and put her to the stove, that is how young I was! I enjoyed your video so much. My father's grandmother was from the Dutch West Indies and taught my grandmother recipes she was (Blackfoot Indian) and could cook! I enjoyed the video and felt like I was with you being taught how to cook the food, right next to you! I like it when people make you feel right at home with them! PS. Thank's for setting the record straight about the Ackee he would have had us all ill- informed and miss- informed!
This is my favorite Jamaica 🇯🇲 Dish hands down‼️💯💯💯 I feel like Mrs. Debbie is My Mom/ Auntie 🤗 🤗 She is the Best Teacher I ever saw online for teaching. She is very detailed and straight to the point‼️💯💯💯🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 May God always Bless her and her Family‼️💯💯💯❤️❤️❤️
Nmaylene As long as it's flavored and cooked properly, it's still delicious using the can. I had it both times when I was in Jamaica and plenty here in the States.
Love your video, I made ackee, from the can, for breakfast this morning. It was my first time. Your personality made the video a pleasure to watch. Felt like my auntie was teaching me how to make it. Keep doing your thing "auntie".
Mrs Debbie did you ever teach? You are so detailed in these videos. Ackee is one of my favorite dishes. I was so glad when I came across you I love your cooking style. God bless!
I just love you, I feel like you are talking to me as a friend. Sometimes, I don't understand what you say but you are just too cute. I just love watching your channel, you are such a great teacher about food. Much love and hugs from me in Edmonton, Canada. Thank you for your videos and for teaching us all.
This is one of the best video on preparing ackee and salt fish authentically Jamaican. I don't like onions so I would cut them thinly or use less. As for the tomato, you are right about the taste it gives the ackee because both the ackee and the tomato are acidic. What I do is I put like a teaspoon of ketchup to cook completely in the oil before I add the fish (be careful as the oil tends to splash). This gives the flavor while toning down the acidity.
And that's another reason why I love watching your videos... Giving us some REAL information as opposed to all of the misinformation that's floating around on here... Looking good, I'm hungry now, lol ;)
I love this lady. I wish she was my auntie. I'm in hospital 2 weeks now, your videos really comforting informative and soo authentic. Remind me of my best friend mom from Jamaica who went home to be with the Lord. Thank u for talking about the ackee to fish ratio. So important. When I get better I'm gonna make your version. God bless you, much success.
Miss Debbie you did a great job! I stop boiling cod fish along time ago, I pour some boiling water on it for about 15 to 20 mins then pour off the water and add some cold water, it removes the salt. Thanks again for your information.
Ok I will go back and search for how to clean the ackee in the other videos. Just read the transcript because I can’t use the sound now. I should have known that you are always thorough. I appreciate you.❤
Debbie I just cooked this for the first time in and it turned out so so perfect. Its the best I've ever tasted. You are exactly what I've been looking for when it comes to learning how to improve my cooking. Thank you! And well done to you! You're a pleasure to watch, a real pleasure x

Cooking this for my husband tonight . I am from the south and he is Jamaican, he like southern food but can be picky so it’s time I learn to cook West Indian food
I use the red sweet pepper as to give a nice colour. Big up yourself you are doing great things. Thanks for helping my cooking to a higher level. God bless.
OMGOSH!!! I just could watch your videos all day and drool, you are so funny and entertaining, bruking in de accent now and then......guyana here from Toronto, .. You make cooking look so simple and always look delcious.
I put tomatoes in my ackee and it taste good no sour taste Just make sure the tomatoes is very ripe and take the seed out I cook it also without the tomatoes I love that right no with roast breadfruit 💯💯💯🇯🇲🇯🇲👍👍👍👍nuff Respect
I thought so too... what u don't know doesn't hurt you.. now that it's been said to u.. trust me, you will taste it. I no longer use tomatoes, try sweet red pepper.
Thank you Miss Debbie for your clear instructional tutorials on preparing Ackee.I had ackee when I visited Jamaica when I had an authentic Jamaican breakfast which was most enjoyable. I had the Acker and salt fish with food. I now have much clearer insight as to the preparing of the dish and will definitely try my hand at it...Keep up the good work and continue to assist people like me to improve my cooking skills.
Like others in the comment from I watched the first of this ladys videos I was hooked and HAD to subscribe. Her personality is perfect for this... "respect and manners" love her. Nuff love to yuh mama Debbie.
Overall this authentic ackee and salt is by far one of my favorite video. I have watched this clip many times and tried the cooking method and believe me the result came out 😮 excellent. ( I used ackee from the tree given to me) Thank you, Ms. Debbie cooking journey.
I definitely prefer authentic food of any culture being from an Indian background myself. These are amazing recipes shared on from a tradition. Thanks for sharing. I love Ackee and saltfish but this video is pressing me to ask am I eating real authentic version or a commercial version. I've never tasted a home version to compare takeaway food from a Caribbean or Jamaican shop. It's like I used to buy Jamaican patties beef and mutton being my favourite but when I tasted a homemade version it was totally delicious. Sometimes I'm craving a patty but if I go to a local sandwich shop in Birmingham UK as I'm passing by all I'm offered is standard menu food. It's like in England we have baked potato stands or burger stands but I would love a few pop up patty stands that I can grab and eat. Esp the porridge. I'm tired of Indian kebabs, Pakistani naan and sheesh kebabs. Sometimes I want a patty and I have to drive out my way to get one surely as I'm speaking from the uk I don't know if the local Jamaican shop approaches local shops to share their products but walk into any takeaway all you will see is sausage rolls a Balti pie as a take out heat up quickly on their menu. But no patties. I would have a patty for breakfast if it was offered me esp the mutton and beef. And another problem the Caribbean shops open late near me yet in Birmingham city centre UK they are open. If I fill up petrol there are no patties in the fridge to heat up. Just sausage rolls etc. But enough of the rant thanks for sharing the recipe.
i dont go anywhere else to find my Jamaican Recipes... thanks Ms.Debbie. I have a 5 month old and i often say to him "are you a ok?! In your neck of the woods?! lol
I can seriously eat ackee and saltfish everyday! I made it your way just now and it was so good!..you're right about the tomatoes and adding all the other stuff really isn't necessary. I've always had ackee and saltfish with veggies in it and although it is pretty i prefer it way. Keep it up girl
Love your vid. Am Antiguan and someone who have an ackee tree gave some ackee from their freezer so wanted to see how to prepare it from you since I always enjoy your cooking
Thank you Debbie for such a detailed cookery lesson in authentic Ackee and Saltfish. Here in England I've only ever used tinned ackee. I was shown to cook it with some thyme, tomatoes and some sweet peppers, but after watching your video I will now refrain from using these ingredients. I like to think I cook authentic and your videos really teach me authentic Jamaican cooking. Thank you for all your hard work Debbie. Shaun, Nottingham, UK :)
yes maam, ive seen other videos on ackee recipes and the final dish does not look like anything im accustomed to seeing when i order the dish in jamaica, ive been going there for 30 years now and i think i know what it should look and taste like, your dish looked much more like what i get in negril restaurants, made my mouth water seeing it, well im finally going to give it a try,[cooking it myself],thanks for the demo, mike wilbur, indiana, usa.
westindian delights Definitely! I'm making your curry chicken recipe tonight 😁 I miss hearing patois around the house so I'm playing your videos on my TV as I cook. Blessings from the US!
you don't want ackee trees in the states. i live in florida and have about 3 trees in my yard and always have to deal with people crossing my border stealing. china man come..he knock on the door and ask. indian man come..he knock on the door and ask. jamaicans..........................no respect. it's so bad i actually made a song about this yearly invasion.
Your channel shld b Debbie's cooking school. Debbie tnx for the schooling... ❤️ I grew up with sauteeing the seasonings 1st but I started experimenting with saltfish 1st ... I agree fish 1st method yield a better finish product. But I also do 🍅🤗. Big up!!!
i tried this and i loved it ! and i actually used baanana blossoms instead of the fish because im vegan, but its a great recipe! Thank you for making the video.
Very nice video! I'm not Jamaican, but OMG! how I love Jamaican food. Ackee and Saltfish is my favorite Jamaican dish. It is a must for me to have it with Rice & Peas, authentic densed Jamaican dumplings (the kind that you must use some muscles to cut a piece off or just use a knife), fried plantains, and Green Bananas.😋 The Ackee that I've eaten had red peppers as well as green, and sometimes tomatoes in it, which didn't give it a sour taste. Oh, the Ackee also had bacon in it, OMG! After having it with bacon, I can't imagine it without. But yours look good as well, and given that it seems less time consuming, I will try yours as well. Intimidating spirit must go so that I can finally learn to make my Ackee & Saltfish!!
