The relationships we form through gaming are authentic. Authentic relationships are based on external judgments based on appearance. However, online, most of our judgements cannot be made.
In this video, Dr. K explains how online relationships can be authentic because judgments on the internet don't matter.

A good friend of mine used to tell me that in the internet it's the people's software that matters, not the hardware.

While i absolutely agree with everything you said, something you missed out on was a dynamic of gamers being judged based on their skill instead of who they are. the internet definitely makes worldly superficial factors irrelevant through anonymity, but judgement still exist based on deterministic criteria depending on the context of the game. These criteria are things like in-game skill, rank, level, achievements or even special gear/cosmetics, all of which act as a form on substitute for real life achievements symbolizing your experience/skill in the game; thereby creating similar hierarchical dynamics within the gaming community.

I would rather say it is way less important. Sure, on the surface of things - but you also make your surrounding way easier on the internet with people who share similar things with you... it's a roundabout way of saying that I think this disparity is less stark than what socioeconomic or otherwise appearance would garner you in day to day life in normal situations.

I kind of quitted lol nowadays but I used to be grandmaster and I had friends all the way from unranked to challenger. Sure, if you feed one game, your teammates on that game will probably hate you. If you play a ranked game and you're matched with four players that are above your rank, they will immediately think you suck. But I don't think this video is focused on those kind of fleeting relationships that just last during those 30 minutes, rather the people you add to play frequently and have some chatting with.
@HanyuuHOLO

@@CiubyX I definitely agree. On real life, you are limited to a set of people from your workplace, college, town, or whatever; and that's it. They like what they like, they do what they do... and if you don't like the same stuff you don't have any alternative. On gaming, just by the mere fact of meeting people through the game itself, you already know that the other person likes gaming, or at least likes that specific game. It's like a massive social club where everyone shares this same interest for the topic the club is about, even if there are some of them who are more into it, or better at it, or have been in the club for years, etc.

I think that people in games make much more lasting relationships because the chance of finding someone compatible with us among thousands of people we meet is much higher than for example among 20 other people from the class, 50 other kids from the neighbourhood, 200 other kids from the school etc.

That's a very fascinating viewpoint! Of course I've heard of online friends that don't mesh well IRL (the digital medium is very different from a person/person medium), but I imagine that the chances of finding people who mesh with you well IRL and online is also higher. Great insight!

Gamer friends are more authentic because you are playing the same game. You put effort into doing accomplishing the same goal, together. It is almost indifferent from having a colleague in your job on the same team. That bond of struggling through something together with someone is really really powerful. Some marriages are built on this bond.

I have an online friend in UK. I live in Turkey. I never left my country. He is 15 years older than me. The thought of having someone on literally 10.000 kms away that, if, whenever I visit that country I can go see that friend in his own house is literally heart warming. It gives you a weird sense of pride.

I actually did that. Also have a UK friend and I line in Germany and went to London together. Was a great vacation :) That was years ago now and we're still friends and he'll be visiting me soon as well. It really is cool xD

A bit of a counterpoint. To access the internet, to have free time to play games, to buy those games, to speak english if you are non-native speaker, that already it is an entry point paywall. People do notice in conversation if you are rich or poor depending on the problems you get, like if you have or not free healthcare, what it means to get sick in your country, what it means for you economy. People from South America who are online, they aren't your average Joe's blue collars just highschool done type of people, they are rich kids, with the world as their oyster, and it shows. Lots of love from Argentina, your techno-Diogenes

This video hits home for, although I didn't have the happy ending like Dr.K and his online friend. I met a completely random guy through call of duty on xbox and he became one of my closest friends. As I grew up and computers became mainstream for gaming I forgot to reach out and add him outside of xbox and when I went back 4 years ago to try and reach out, he too had moved on in life and wasn't active on xbox anymore. To this day, every now and then when I stumble upon stories like this it reminds me of him and I still try to reach out and find a way to reconnect with him.

Really true ! I still talk with a Belgium friend that I first met in 2012 on call of duty. We was on the same team and played minecraft, gta, a lot. Good funny moments with all our friends. Sadly, depsite all these years, we still didn't find a time to meet IRL. I always bring pretexts.. I struggle to trust people in real life. I'm afraid of being awkward too. It looks like I can maintain this kind of "authentic relationship" only through gaming. I tend to analyze a lot people facial expression. It give me an unconfortable feeling of what they can think of me.. This can be related to a lack of self love. Since I don't really think good of myself.

I actually make it a point to meet the online friends that I feel like I have a real connection to in RL. So far, aside of one impulsive meeting where I didn't know that person as much, it went really great. I'm still in contact with them and we visit each other now and then. One of them even lives in a totally different part of Europe then I do. They are great friends!

Tru. From a group of 11 online friends who have equally cared for each other for 5 years. But the criteria is to know how to make irl friends and yet choosing them; Instead of using them as a crutch (we are a group ranging from 17-22 year olds if that plays a factor)

I've never thought about. Indeed, most of friends, that I made in game, is present in my life so far.

I was also kind of thinking that my gamer friends also know more about me than my real-life friends. Like I see the people I know in real life once maybe twice a month but I play with my gamer friends at least once a weekend. We also hang out for longer, and there is usually less alcohol involved with my gamer buddies so we are more coherent.

I lost a great online friend and it’s the biggest regret in my life. We played competitive cod together for growing up. While it is difficult to make actual friendships in real life I was able to connect with him so much. We would talk about visiting each other one day even though he lived in Canada. Due to my unexplained mental health problems which I know elk now what caused it. Our friendship drifted off.

in other cases is a massive disavantage, usually in the games field boys treat girls like garbage and act like if a girl cannot commit mistakes in the game
