Aloha and welcome to the final recipe in our 4-part Hawaiian series! Today, we're diving into the iconic Spam Musubi, a beloved Hawaiian classic that's both delicious and satisfying. With just a few simple ingredients, you too can enjoy this tasty treat, so let's get started!
Ingredients:
2 Cups Rice
1 Can Spam
2 TBSP Mirin
2 TBSP Sugar
2 TBSP Soy Sauce
Furikake (or ingredients to make a homemade version: sesame seeds, nori pieces, sugar, salt)
Nori sheets (to assemble)
Optional: eggs (for those who prefer it)
Directions:
1. First, prepare your rice by soaking and scrubbing it until the water runs mostly clear. Drain the water a couple of times, then cook the rice as usual in a rice cooker.
2. Next, cut your Spam into 8 evenly sized pieces and cook them in a pan over medium heat for a few minutes on each side. No need for oil, as Spam has plenty of fat to cook itself.
3. Once cooked, deglaze the pan with 2 tbsp of mirin, then add 2 tbsp of sugar and 2 tbsp of soy sauce. Lower the heat to medium-low and allow the sauce to thicken slightly before adding the Spam back in. Ensure each piece is coated in the delicious sauce, then remove from the pan.
4. If you're out of furikake for the rice, fear not! You can make a basic homemade version by toasting sesame seeds in a pan, adding nori pieces, sugar, and salt. It's wonderfully toasty and adds the perfect flavor to your musubi.
5. Now, use the Spam can to help shape the musubi. Pack in the rice, sprinkle with furikake, then layer the Spam on top. Wrap it all up with a piece of briefly toasted nori, and voila, you're done! Feel free to add some egg to a few if you like.
Indulge in the wonderfully flavorful and fantastically filling Spam Musubi, just like they make it in Hawaii. We hope you've enjoyed our journey through some classic Hawaiian staples. Stay tuned for more delicious recipes from Bear in the future. Aloha!
