Depression is a coat I’ve been wearing since I was 16. It’s a garment for all seasons. It’s the air I often breathe. I wish I knew that I was autistic when I was that scared, traumatised 16-year-old. I had absolutely no idea. And now, in my 40s, I understand: I’m autistic in a random, brutal world, when I all I crave is peace. It’s no wonder that, like many other autists, I feel depressed. However, it’s not all doom and gloom - finally knowing that I’m autistic has led to me connecting with fellow autists, and as a result, I feel less alone and less depressed than I did all those years ago.

Well said.

My Psychologist told me I exhibited many Autistic Traits, and in the same sentence said that I didn't need another label to add to my depressive state. I later found out (late last year) that that was Autistic Burnout, and that the label that I then gave myself helped me to be more forgiving and understanding about my shortcomings and allowed me to understand myself better without the help of my Psychologist.

I really don't know why people are so anxious about labels. It's good to know what things are! For me, RU-vid has been far more useful than a psychologist in terms of recognition and support.

From the depth of my morbid thoughts and seemingly everlasting depression, thank you for making this video. Feeling less alone is the last thing we can hold onto...

Thank you so much for your comments, and please accept my apologies for the delayed acknowledgement. Depression has swallowed a huge chunk of my thoughts over the years, and it still regularly distorts my days to the point that I...write very dark poetry. As long as it's just poetry, I'm OK. Communicating with people like yourself makes a huge difference to my well-being, and so I continue. I hope you will too.

Hi Neil ! I'm coming from Jenny's channel to discover yours, and wow... With such quality videos (the content, of course, but also visually), you deserve many more suscribers ! Thank you for this video, I was feeling everything you said while listening to you.

@@AutisticNotAlien Thank you ! I loved what you said too ! You brought very important topics we don't talk about as much as we should . I'm quite ashamed of my accent, I need to practice more, but nobody speaks english around me. I was glad to hear you british accent (more familiar to me !)

I think it's why I thrive, downright luxuriate, in the grayest, gloomiest, drizzliest weather. It's a comforting blanket that resonates, melds with, my soul, and I can lose myself in it. It saves me from the brutal, searing, scorching sun. I'm home in gloomy dark weather, actually happy and light there, able to breathe and think. It's, yes, peace and security, especially with a comforting white-noise patter of rain. The real drizzle right in front of your eyes is comforting, while the metaphorical drizzle right in front of your eyes on a stark searing day is... hell.

Paul (Adult with Autism) says pretty much the same thing. He loves the cold and dark. He also loves rain. I wrote a poem about an experience he described. It's called 'Rain, Man!, which is one of many pot shots at the film stereotype.

Thank you, Brandon. Two hours ago, I collected a new prescription for anti-depressants. My brain absolutely sucks at times.

@@AutisticNotAlien I may have to go that same route, though I'm first going to see if ADHD meds help. My issue with depression is that it feels like I lack the ability to rest, somehow. I know my brain needs to be fully absorbed and lost in something for me to help get out of the autistic burnout I'm in, as I find being in a flow-state to be one of the best things I can do for my mental health. But this feeling of depression makes enjoying something enough to get into flow state almost impossible. Its a conundrum.

@@Brandontsmith85 Thank you - this explains my mind really well! I actually went to get a prescription for ADHD meds, but my GP said I need to sort my mood out first! Which is fair enough.

Hi, nice video. I'm level 2 autistic, undiagnosed during childhood, and MDD has been part of my life since I was 4. Unfortunately, despite therapy, it's not like the weather.
