Make your own automatic Hay Feeder.
Feed twice a day but only have to show up once a day.
12VDC 3A Power supply: www.amazon.com...
Timer: www.amazon.com...
Magnetic Latch: www.amazon.com...
Smart Plug. You can use instead of the timer if your barn has wifi. Much more flexible setting drop times. www.amazon.com...

I’m going to build one of these but with an electric hay elevator. So we can load 10+ bales and remotely drop a bale through a window.

Gday, i currently have 3 automatic hay feeders which work similarly, however i do not have acces to 220v / 110v, as they are ment to stand alone and are 'driven' by an battery pack with a small solar panel. I currently have the issue that i cant overcome the weight of the hay in a bag to consistently drop the hatch. Is this magnetic lock you're using a demagnetizing lock when activated, or is it an electric one that needs constant power and drops when the power is dropped?

Needs constant 12vdc power to magnet latch. Drops hay when power is removed for 1 minute twice a day.

Do you have any ideas on how to set up several different drops out of the same feeder? My wife like them to have access to food most of the day so she feeds 4 times a day. Looking for ideas for this. She uses hay bags, so I thought you could create some type of merry go round system that would only give them access to one bag at a time. Any thoughts on that design or modifying your idea for several different feeding times without building several different boxes. Possibly have 4 doors in one box?

I’m trying to figure that out too. I built 2 of these, but would like to add a shelf to each.

It would have to be something round that could rotate different hay chambers over a hole. Need a cheap strong motor. Maybe a car wiper motor with some kinda smart switch that only advances one stage every few hours. The wiper motor need a high current power source too. Maybe a car battery with a maintenance charger on it to keep it always charged.

Does the magnet still work well in winter conditions? -30 degrees c?

You would have look up the specs on the magnet and the 12v power supply. Should be fine down to below zeroish. Never had a problem last year in iowa on two hay feeders. Some nights it got down to -15F or so.

How do you hook up the magnetic latch with the timer?
@gse244

Find in video time at 1:50. Shows the + Red and - Black wires. Then at 2:00 - 2:29 it shows them routed to the power supply connector and wall plug. Make sure your + and - connections correct. Then starting at 2:52 it show it pugged into the timer. Sorry I didn't show where I got the power supply. It needs to be 12VDC and at least 3A rated. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08LQZWV8L/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

@@gse244 the link shows a 12V 2A. I built 2 feeders, got it all wired up with a 12V 1A and nothing.

The video says you made a smaller one for 1 horse. Could you tell me the size of the frames you made for the smaller one? thanks
@gse244
@gse244 11 месяцев назад
That is a small one for a pony. The inside dimensions are the size of a flake of hay. And holdes maybe 5 flakes. Make it as tall for as many flakes to drop. For as many horses you have. The latch may hold the weight of a half a bail. Thanks

@@gse244 thanks. This is just what I need. Question: It is not unusual for our power to go out. I take it when power hits it through the timer, that is when it drops. So it would delay the drop by how long the power is out, right?
@gse244
@gse244 11 месяцев назад
Yes if you lose power during the day it will drop the hay then. We set our drop times at 7:30 am to 7:31 am and again at 4:00pm to 4:01pm. Then you can choose to load it anytime after those to drop for the other time later that day.

@@gse244 Thanks so much!!! I got it made and it works great. Had to adjust a few things at first, like getting the magnetic part to work right but got it. Sure appreciate your simple design.

What size wire did you use?
@gse244
@gse244 Год назад
16 or 18 gauge wire can be used. Use something close or bigger than what the magnet latch is.

It is wasteful bc they will drag the hay through mud poop etc

Put something to catch the hay underneath. 😊
