It is so strange but the learning curve is quick when riding an Automatic motorcycle! Yes, the Honda Africa Twin with DCT - Dual Clutch Transmission - is a really neat machine. It shifts up and down and NEVER Stalls! Pretty Awesome. This video is the first of several where I ride this bike nearly everywhere!

I bought the dct version so I don't have to keep pulling a clutch. I have nerve damage in my hands and this bike allows me to ride again and for longer periods especially when I'm in town. Great bike.

I just bought the ATAS DCT because I figure why not?? Ferrari and Porche all use it and then I dont have to worry about getting sore hands riding the clutch in heavy traffic-which I get in my travels. Why buy a new bike with only 50% of the new technology!?

I am a senior rider and have developed a tremor in my left hand. I am concerned about being able to control the clutch if I get caught in stop-and-crawl traffic. I have to wait until October to see a neurologist to be evaluated as to what might be the prognosis for this problem. I have been riding an R1200GS but might switch to an Africa Twin DCT version, depending on what medical advice I get.

I’ve got a 2019 AT dct. I love it! I like sport mode in automatic, there’s 3 levels of sport mode. The first level is the one I ride with the most. The other two levels hold the gears quite a bit longer. Every once in a while I’ll manually shift up or down one gear for the riding conditions. Most of the time the bike does a great job of doing all the shifting for you.

Good news! • Did you know that there is someone who died for you on a cross so that you could achieve eternal life? • Did you know that you only have two paths after death? The Bible tells us in the book of Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." and in Ecclesiastes 7:20 it says "Certainly there is no righteous man on earth who does good and never sins." This tells us that all human beings are sinners (we all break God's law), therefore, we deserve God's punishment for going against his word, but the good news is that through his son Jesus Christ we can obtain forgiveness of sins: John 3:16 [16] For God loved the world so much that he gave his only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish, but may have eternal life. Romans 5: 8 [8] But God shows his love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Jesus Christ the only begotten son of God died on a cross for all humanity more than 2000 years ago, rising on the third day and paying a high price for our sins, since in the Bible it tells us that there is a heaven after death but also There is a hell and the kingdom of heaven can only be reached through Jesus Christ through the forgiveness of sins, it is not through any virgin or any saint, or by any other means, there is only one mediator between God and men, so if you want to go to heaven you have to repent of your sins (fornication, lies, etc.) and follow Jesus (obey biblical commandments). Christ is coming soon! Judgments come to earth (asteroids, earthquakes, etc.), seek God who has great things for your life. God bless you. Prayer: Prayer: dear Lord Jesus forgive my sins, I know that I am a sinner and I need your forgiveness, enter my heart and guide me towards eternal life, thank you. Amen

I had the '16 AT DCT and while I found it to be a bit of an average adventure bike, I absolutely loved the dual clutch transmission, and that made the whole package so much more desirable. Like one of the commenters, I have some pain in my left hand and really miss not having to deal with a lever all the time. Shifting off road has never been more fun, too. I wish Honda would get their act together and bring us some smaller, lighter, adventure bikes with the same tech (something more capable than the NC series, please).

Just to add some experience comments. I have ridden it +- 17.000 km on 1 year. (2016 DCT) It's really great off-road. You can't stall. And because its DCT you got more time/focus on your riding off-road. Concerning on-road. During winter on a cold start you do have to watch out for stalls. WHen its cold and the first few kilometers/miles you have to watch it giving to much gas when riding off (at stop lights). Because of the automatic choke and the dct it sometimes chokes itself causing the engine to stall. No big deal...just watch the throttle on cold starts. Another nice thing is the GRAVEL mode. The auto clutch is much more direct in G mode. I sometimes ride the XRV750 1993 manual, but I cannot enjoy riding it like with the DCT..... cheers

Great feedback! I too have ridden the 2018 DCT model for about 12k miles and have to say it is a blast! This video was my FIRST encounter... but it got better and better over time. Learning to wheelie it was super fun too! I have now ridden it in the Goldwing, Rebel 1100, Honda Talon, and the Pioneer... I like the function best on the Africa Twin and the Talon. Those two applications seemed to allow more "aggressive" shifting then the other vehicles. Good stuff Honda. Good stuff!

You'll get used to the DCT quickly Kyle. I switched over to a 2010 Honda VFR 1200 DCT 8 years ago and have not regretted it. In fact, when I traded in the VFR for the new 2020 Africa Twin Adventure Sports there was no question I was staying with the DCT. I am curious once you get off-road how you like it as all my experience with the DCT was on tarmac. Too much ice on the roads my way to get on the new bike for a while. (Thanks for all the work on the Dunlop Trail Max Mission Adventure tire test you did as I mounted those on the new bike.) Maybe after this test Honda will lend you the 2020, it's like a whole new bike compared to 2019.

As a n00b I'm kind of torn. I'm one hand I'd imagine it simplifies things while learning to ride. I can assure you that while it's probably at least a little helpful to know how to drive stick in a vehicle, it's still a completely different set of motions to have to do on a bike so you're still learning from scratch. That said, it is comforting to know the clutch is there to help get you out of trouble on a manual bike. If you remember to use it...;) BTW....I really feel you on reaching for the clutch and gear shift by instinct, I used to do that all the time when going from a straight drive to automatic car (current ride is automatic).
@manybikes
@manybikes 3 года назад
Yes, it is a bit strange. I wish the clutch lever was still there allowing the rider to slip the clutch (slow speed u-turns) or release it quickly to pop over logs and such... that would be amazing. But... after 6 months on this bike the FUN-ness of the quick shifting / the downshift blips did not get old! Super fun bike to ride!

Im not hating on you man but I think you were a bit melodramatic when commenting on how “weird” the DCT feels. It’s not weird......just different. I personally had no problem when in D mode imagining my hand as being my foot when driving a car with an automatic transmission. The throttle input determines how many gears it will drop. OR just hit the downshift paddle as many times as required. The computer will not allow you to over rev it when downshifting manually. Sport modes simply increase the RPMs at which the DCT will shift up or down. It’s not rocket science. I think you put the DCT, a normally marvelous easy to use transmission, in a negative and off-putting light describing it as you did. Just saying. Reaching for the non-existent clutch was a one time occurrence for me.....two at max. I really enjoy the ease and versatility of the DCT and the wonderful Africa Twin it’s attached too.

Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment & express your feelings. In no way was I intending to speak badly of the bike - but it was really an odd sensation. I put 6k miles on this bike in a 4 month period and loved it! There are two or three situations where I missed the ability to slip the clutch or the ability to “clutch up and over” something. It is a remarkable system - just a bit different on that first ride. - Kyle

I never knew such a thing exists. You have these on the floor at Chap Moto? I would need a dummy clutch lever so my fingers have somewhere to rest lol. You think this would ever morph into police bikes? I could see a huge advantage for a cop to have that extra free hand to use. Especially at low speeds to hop off for a foot pursuit or grab stuff, etc. Also in other countries I've literally seen bike cops shooting at cars during a pursuit. Not to mention the pure fact that they spend all day everyday on a bike.

I have the 17 DCT model AT.I was pulling out of a gas station one day while a cop car was coming in and stopped next to me. I thought oh crap! He rolled down the window and yelled out, how do you like that bike? :D Probably with a mild nervousness on my face I said " It is awesome" I love it. I think they'd enjoy this bike just like the other cops in some cities enjoy the electric bikes. I've already ridden the Zero SR. Very cool, quiet little rockets. The 2020 models look even better and they're stronger too. I do keep my Yamaha MT09 to stay in shape with the clutch hand and I have no problem alternating between the two bikes. Very easy to get used to.

How do you rev bomb with a dct in a tunnel without pulling off a wheelie? Also, what's the shift pattern when using the paddles? 1 n 2 3 4 5 6? Or n 1 2 3 4 5 6? Or it doesn't have neutral, 1 2 3 4 5 6?
@manybikes
@manybikes 3 года назад
Well... you really can't rev bomb in the tunnel with this bike... unless you just pin it and back off a bunch of times. You might wheelie... but the sound will be there ;) N happens when the throttle is cut off and the gears automatically shift down from 2 to 1 to N. Unlike a manual shift... Neutral is at the bottom. Now... sitting at a light the bike is actually in 1st, not N. You can even (in manual mode) change it to 2nd or 3rd and the bike will remain stationary until you Twist the throttle to make it go. It is "strange" for a bit but you get used to it easily.

Any update on riding the DCT?
@manybikes
@manybikes 4 года назад
Yes, I was on the DCT model for nearly 7k miles and tested 15 different ADV tires on that bike. I really really like it ... but there are two unique situations where I prefer a manual transmission - or better said the Clutch that allows the engine to REV while slipping the clutch to keep the bike upright and power "ready to be released." Or... for popping the clutch to lift the front wheel up and over objects. Other than that... the DCT is KING! Love it! I've got about 12 videos to come with the DCT and a full on review at the end. Drew from scared20 once you twist the throttle the bike rolls forward shifting itself into gears up and down as appropriate. You can manually override it if you want... but it doesn’t all automatically

Question. With my standard bikes, when in get to the top of a big hill, I like to throw the bike into neutral and “glide” down the hill. I can’t seem to figure out how to do that with the DCT. Is it not possible to put the bike in neutral while driving?
@manybikes
@manybikes Год назад
Yes. There is a neutral button. I’d imagine it works when riding…
@philipbullock5227
@philipbullock5227 Год назад
Thanks manybikes. One tried the neutral button and it doesn’t engage while I’m moving. Yes, I can stop the bike, put it in nuetral, and then coast down the hill, but of course I don’t want to have to stop my momentum. As another analogy, I want to mimic “pulling in the clutch” and coasting, while driving.
@manybikes

@@philipbullock5227 got ya! I had long conversations with Honda about that… I wanted clutch lever functionality “when I needed it” but they said it wasn’t necessary. Off road, it’s needed I think.

@@manybikes so maybe the idea is I just let off the throttle and it will “coast” down the hill like it’s in neutral without actually having to put it in neutral. Hmmm. I’ll give that a try next time. Thanks for the responses. Have a great day.

He can see the car in front of the red vehicle so if that vehicle applies the brakes but the red one is distracted by something and rear-end the other, the bike is already slowing down and looking for an exit path.

That would be amazing! If a clutch lever was added... I WOULD buy a DCT... But not until then. Kinda like a Recluse set up.

I have never owned an automatic transmission car in my life. Always bought a manual transmission car. Since I've never ridden on a motorcycle, this would be easy for me to handle without the constant bickering of this guy about not having any manual clutch system on the bike. I've known some people who were killed on manual motor bikes so I assume this auto transmission bike would play a role on safety because you are more vulnerable on a motorbike that do not give you any protection at all in a crash. Enough with the weird, weird statements.
