Automatic negative thoughts are involuntary, habitual thoughts that focus on negatives, exaggerate problems, or predict disaster.
The impact of automatic negative thoughts is profound; they can distort your perspective, trigger strong emotions, and influence behavior in harmful ways. For example, you might not go to a social activity because your automatic negative thought says “You’ll have a terrible time,” and that can lead to missed opportunities, isolation, and a cycle of feeling worse and worse.
In this video you’ll learn about the automatic negative thoughts that fuel the anxiety cycle and lead to feeling overwhelmed or hopeless. You probably aren’t even aware of the types of thoughts that take you there, so we’ll explore them. And then we’ll talk about both a CBT and ACT approach to dealing with them.
Let me tell you a story about the invisible thing that fuels anxiety and depression. And then I’m going to teach you some skills to stop letting it control you and how you feel.

I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.

Keep fighting the good fight. We live in a weird time, born too late to explore Earth, and too early to explore the Universe, this generation's "frontier" is the human mind. Don't try and remove anxiety all together, it most likely wont happen and it will cause additional stress. What has worked for me, is learning to accept the feelings, and wrapping my head around the fact that they don't actually hold any power; its an automated (albeit OUTDATED) defense mechanism that is no longer opperating in your best interest. And remember: It's the stuggles in life, and how you react that define you as a person. The more discomfort you go through now, the easier things will become. I know it may not seem like it at the moment, but trust me. Humans are creatures of homeostasis; you will look back on all the work you've done and be able to help others.

Yep. One thing that helps me is stop putting a story to a situation ie I didn't get the job ...because I'm useless, they ignored me...because I'm horrible.. I overspent this month... this means I'm going to be homeless. Drop the "because or this means" bit...... No story attached or negative meaning. It just is - good or bad. It's the negative storyline attached that makes you spiral into negative emotions. Some say just put a positive storyline to it, but that's like throwing pink paint over shite. Some things are shite but with no story attached to it's easier to move through, get over, take action and move on. I didn't get the job. Full stop They ignored me. Full stop I overspent. Full stop Is how the thinking should go. When you're not attaching a story to a situation you can then go back and think about them or deal with them after some space not flooded by unhelpful emotions.

What my therapist used to always tell me is to use the phrase “I feel” whether talking to myself or expressing my feelings to someone else, instead of saying “I’m mad,” “I’m sad” instead you say “ I feel sad.” It gives so much more power to YOU rather than your thoughts and feelings. When I really started implementing this it changed my life

Thanks for the video! When dealing with OCD, recognizing automatic thought patterns is also very helpful. For example, a mother, due to the stress, may have a thought:"What if I hurt my baby." The next thought she may have:"Oh my god! Why I am having this thought at all?!! I'm definitely a bad mother." And that's how she gets trapped, by being stuck in arguing with her first thought (aka. If I have this thought, then I can indeed cause harm to my baby). In other words, understanding that we don't choose the nature of thoughts and that many of them are just automatically generated by our brain, would help see the person that it is merely a thought, not a reality.

This has been my ocd intrusive thought for 15 years since I’ve been a mum and it causes me so much distress and anxiety I’m working hard on challenging them now I know and starting to understand that we don’t chose our thoughts and they aren’t facts Thank you!!
@alexanderguryev2416
@alexanderguryev2416 7 месяцев назад
@@Minecraftgamerboy2015 Yes, as you told yourself, it's precisely two types of behaviour which reinforce intrusive thoughts: i) Judging your thoughts as good or bad, and especially judging yourself as a bad or non-adequate person for having uncomfortable thoughts. Everyone has uncomfortable thoughts, and it's OK to experience them (like the bad news you hear on the radio). Like our dreams that we don't choose when we are sleeping, our thoughts have pretty much their own nature and life; very often we don't choose them (I'd rather say, they choose us instead depending on our emotional states; for example, more chance to have negative thoughts when we are tired or stressed); ii) Taking your thoughts for a fact or a matter of reality. But once more, thoughts are just thoughts, and very often they are poor predictors. Coupled together, these behavior patterns reinforce intrusive thoughts.

@@TherapyinaNutshell I didn't find affirmations particularly helpful either, until I started doing the 5 Minute Journal (that my therapist recommended) where, right before bed, you reflect on the affirmation you that wrote down first thing in the morning. Something about reflecting on what your aspirations for the day were and then noticing and actually writing down what went right seems to be incredibly powerful over time. I have noticed a significant shift away from automatic negative thinking to noticing more positive things happening throughout the day. "Neurons that fire together, wire together." :)

Honestly, trying to learn to distance myself from those toughts and naming them as being toughts not reality, has been hard but helpful. Sometimes its easier and sometimes harder, but I know it'll get easier day by day, that even when my today might look gloomy, it doesn't mean I will relapse into deep anxiety and dissociation. And even if i did, then i will be able to pick myself up and continue on. 🥰

I feel so lucky to have found this video today! I had a super similar experience to the story - was having an emotional day, went to the store, found a parking spot where the person next to me was over the line. I parked in it anyways and it ended up literally boxing in their drivers side door (I was within the lines tho, in my defense 😂) but I thought what the heck I’ll run in and grab my stuff and hopefully be back out before they get back. Lo and behold I get back, they’re gone, and there’s a fat note on my window saying “YOU PARK LIKE AN ASS!” I was super surprised that it affected me how it did - I immediately felt awful and guilty and started beating myself up, telling myself I was an awful driver and I deserved the bad note and literally working myself to tears over it. At the same time I felt so ashamed of the overly emotional reaction. This video really helped me reframe it - to put in perspective that maybe I wasn’t an awful person or a terrible driver, maybe we were both just having bad days. And also to reframe that reaction as constant negative thoughts being the problem, not myself being the problem. I just think it’s wild that I found a video so applicable to todays events that helped me so much! Life is cool.

I’ve had the same thing happen to me. I was not pregnant tho. The fact that someone would go to the trouble to call that out, is disgusting! They must be oh so perfect! Sure karma circles around to get them

Can you help with the reliable source I would really appreciate it. Many people talk about mushrooms and psychedelics but nobody talks about where to get them. Very hard to get a reliable source here in Australia. Really need!

I wish they were readily available in my place. Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He is 59 & has so many mental health issues plus probable CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma 8 days. It's too late now I had to get a TPO as he's 6'6 300+ pound homicidal maniac. He's constantly talking about killing someone. He's violent. Anyone reading this Familiar w/ BPD know if it is common for an obsession with violence.

Thoughts are like clouds, they float away. The objective is to let the thought go, like a cloud. If the thought won't go away, replace it with a positive or gratitude thought. Eventually the positive or grateful thoughts becomes automatic. ALSO Focus intently on the 5 senses. What do you see, hear, feel, smell or taste? This will help you to BE present.

“Automatic Negative Thoughts” can also be a symptom of OCD ie “Intrusive Thoughts” which are not based in reality and usually the opposite of you. Like the “hand washers,” their thought is “wash them again; they’re still dirty” which is not true. Learning to be present and tap into one’s true beliefs can help to differentiate between the “lie” and “your truth.”🌷
