Ok, let's talk about the MCU and its female heroes. Because while its getting better, it's still not exactly....good.

Fandom Musings you said it yourself this movie was meant to be about the original six. Of corse they didn’t play a huge role, they are largely background characters. I was terribly forced and did nothing to actually help establish the female characters as needed. And anyway, if it wasn’t for Cap. Marvel taking out Thanos’s shipand distracting him long enough to allow Tony and Strange to talk and opening up Thanos to let Tony swipe the stones, our heroes would have failed, period. There’s a reason why assists are so important to team sports like Hockey, Basketball, and Soccer. It’s not because they mean nothing or are unimportant.

Was disappointed that nebula didn't get her resolution with thanos. She sorta took a back seat during the final battle. Also her killing herself should've been framed as a final extreme act of self harm. Something thanos taught her after all that abyse. by being so devoted to him she would try and kill herself to please him...so future nebula kills that version of her. She makes strides and does it to protect her sister. To protect herself. Then nebula sits there kinda shook emotion wise and It is gamora who takes the bronze head plate from the dead past nebula and fixes it to future nebulas head...as a way to "put her back together"...the sisters making a silent promise to mend/heal each other. The final female avengers team up should've been framed as a tribute to black widow. Cos she did everything to keep the team together and going after the snap and then also a callback to the okoye black widow "she's not alone" scene. They should've had the passing of the gauntlet like a football with all the female characters (carry/support) and a wide shot then of captain marvel flying off with it with all the other female characters in frame having pass d off the gauntlet. Could've had the imagery without the cheese.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again-as much as I loved the final snap......it should have been Nebula and Gamora. Killing Thanos, the man who’d tortured, conditioned and abused them their whole lives should have, was te best way to wrap up their phase 3 stories. Maybe they could have done it...like they kill him, but the battle keeps raging. So Tony makes the choice to take the gauntlet and get the job done.

I love the MCU, but the fact that female experience has been sidelined in the MCU is so obvious. I was furious that they killed Natasha. I think the only reason they sacrificed Nat was so that Clint would survive. Even though Clint sacrificing himself would redeem at least a little bit of the horrible stuff he did, I think the writers were much more afraid of having to write a female having to process and manage her friend's death; and taking care of Clint's family. When the phone rang in the scene after this movie's snap, I genuinely thought how much more heartbreaking would it have been if Nat had to answer and let his family know. It just feels like a missed opportunity.

Can't really blame the Russos for that since it was already decided by Disney that Hawkeye needed his own TV show. Maybe they could have done the scene different or figured out a better solution (the proposed addition of pathos to Natash's character arc in this video would be a good start), but in the end the decision for Hawkeye to live was out of their hands. Hopefully that gets explored in said TV show and they actually address that kind of stuff, probably as a reason for him retiring and passing the Hawkeye name to Kate. Outside of making it a prequel somewhere between Civil War and Infinity War that has him meeting and training Kate but never mentioning her in Endgame, at least.

See, the problem is exactly what you mentioned earlier on: convenience. The reason Carol doesn’t show up for most of the movie is that she’s far too powerful. Put Carol in the second arc and we never would have lost Loki and never would have had to return to the 70s for the Pym particles and the Tesseract. Thanos had to use the Power stone directly to even knock Carol back. Doctor Strange also was put on the sidelines dealing with flooding because he’s also too powerful for the movie to handle.
@samwallaceart288
@samwallaceart288 5 лет назад
T C - It’s tricky when a character is that OP. As for me, I’m glad that they let Tony be the one to do the snap, as he’s really the main character for this one. That said, they could’ve done more with Carol’s OP-ness without throwing off too much. I’m genuinely curious how one could use Carol for a time-heist. Like how Cap had to act friendly to known enemies, how Ant-Man and Tony had to stay inconspicuous, how Hulk had to resolve his issue with talking alone; they could have subverted Carol a bit by having her sneak into some place and use her powers in small ways to get past locks or distract people, but keeping a low profile; something to show her strategy and improvisation as well as her brute power. (Maybe she already did though, I haven’t seen her movie yet.)

Thing is, send Carol on the mission with Natasha and Clint and you solve 90% of the problems with the movie. Because than it doesn't look so strange that they send the weakest Avengers to the one place where they don't know what awaits them, Carol's power would have been perfectly useless in the situation at hand and there would be some suspense for the audience that this might not end with either Natasha or Clint dead.

Glad to see someone address this in a video, I feel like my sub box is full of people who adored this movie and I'm sad that I didn't enjoy it cuz I've been a fan since the beginning. I felt like Steve's ending was only sweet for a few seconds before you consider the ramifications of it. The movie disrespects Peggy's agency as a character by bringing her back from the dead and setting her up as a prop for Steve. She has no real lines in the movie and is basically a prize for Steve at the end (the Russos even imply this thought process in an interview). Also, depending on whose time travel rules you're going by (the writers and directors can't seem to decide what the truth is), Steve is Sharon's uncle? Ew? If they claim to have wanted him to go back to Peggy "from the beginning," why have him kiss Sharon? Steve's ending also disrespects his relationships with the other avengers, especially Bucky and Sam. If Steve's therapy group is about the snap, why is he talking about Peggy and not his two best friends who were snapped? Steve doesn't seem to mourn them at all during the movie. It's almost as though he's mad about losing to Thanos, not sad his friends are gone. The only time he mentions Bucky before their 30 second scene together at the end is when he uses Bucky's name to distract 2012 Steve. He and Sam only interact a little in the final battle and at the end, and he and Bucky only have a few lines between them. Then he leaves them for 70+ years to live a completely different life? I understand Steve needs to retire, but what was stopping him from retiring in the present? In act 1, they set up that you can "let time travel through you" when Scott uses the van to time travel. Why not have Steve do that and become small Steve again? I've seen endgame twice now, and the more I think about it, the more it seems like the only parts I enjoy are a few jokes here and there and some fan service. The story and character are majorly lacking in a lot of areas, which is a shame since this is the last we'll see if most of these characters.

Natalie Rogers I’ve refrained from rewatching for that very reason. I think the film’s biggest strength was also it’s weakness. To much building up, to many moving parts and not enough time to work through them all and meaningfully progress the plot.
@princessjellyfish98
@princessjellyfish98 5 лет назад
macmurfy2jka that's so true! For all the time they spent on slower character interaction, so little actually happens! Like, tony just gets over what happened with cap off screen? And they don't talk about civil war at all aside from the first scene where tony is yelling? An Audi ad is a pretty anticlimactic way to tie up that relationship
@thatkidwiththehoodie
@thatkidwiththehoodie 5 лет назад
In fairness, regarding him kissing Sharon, that was when, I assume, he didn't know about the time-travel properties of Pym Particles and was working off the assumption that there was no way he could be with Peggy at that point. That being said, it would've been interesting to see him grapple with the implications of maybe dating his crush's daughter (perhaps exploring the idea about how Sharon, to him, would be the "closest he could get" to being with Peggy, and what that means for his attitudes and values). Sadly, I can't say I'd expect the writers to go there, at least not yet...
@princessjellyfish98
@princessjellyfish98 5 лет назад
@@thatkidwiththehoodie Yeah, it's more about the fact that the writers claim in interviews that they always planned for Steve to go back to the past. I don't believe that could be true because they also wrote Sharon as Steve's love interest. If they had known this was Steve's ending from the beginning they wouldn't have done that unless they're truly disgusting. It's a shame they threw away another female character in service of giving Steve a love interest in Civil War. The thing I'm most excited to see is how Sam and Bucky cope with Steve (likely) dying of old age during the Falcon/Winter Soldier tv show. Idk what the writers of that show have planned but hopefully they don't throw away all that potential.

Personally I'm not angry about Black Widow's death (though it does feel weird) because I've never really liked her, except in Winter Soldier. But Nebula was definitely snubbed in the end where she isn't integral to the killing of Thanos. I mean Tony definitely should have given the final blow but I think Nebula should have one last confrontation with Thanos. I think Nando v Movies' rewrite would've made sense, like who cares if Captain Marvel takes the gauntlet in the last leg, Nebula should've been the one to do so. I hate the idea that having a family gives your life more meaning. Natasha decided her life has less value than Clint's, because she has no family. His life is worth more than hers because he has a wife and children. I think that was really tone-deaf, especially considering the past criticism they've recieved for Natasha's storyline. I have a question if you saw a child being hurt and you only had a second to step in and take action or risk leaving to get help to come back and see it was to late now. What would you choose? Maybe you wouldn't cause that's not who you are. But Natasha had seconds because hawkeye was running to death. They were both willing to make that sacrifice for the other because they both felt the other life was more valuable. Either way its a lose lose with this demographic. If hawkeye manged to kill himself for a woman the woman will say we dont need a man to save us a mans life isnt worth more. Hawkeye lives... Same stuff a mans life isnt more important. How does having a family not give your life more meaning? Theres 5 individuals depending on Hawkeye. If he dies his wife has to raise their kids all alone, the children will grow up without the love of their father from a young age. Losing a parent at a young age has very bad effects on children and that's just a fact. So yeah having a family makes him more important. When deciding who should die you have to think about the people they're leaving behind. The only loved ones nat has are grown adults than can move on from her death. I didn't like Endgame. I didn't like the way Steve's story ended, I didn't like the way Tony's story ended and I mostly definitely didn't like the way Natasha's story ended. The problem with the MCU is that it wants to be deep and meaningful and have great characters and great character development....but it also wants to be a series of action movies, with fights and explosions and aliens and magic. So, especially in the big ensemble movies, the character development is saved for the big heroes (Cap, Iron Man, Thor) and is just barely there for every other character. The MCU wants to have it all, but can't actually do it all really well, so it does it all half-assed. Not to mention that Endgame basically took most of the other movies and went, "Canon? What's canon? We know nothing of canon." Ragnarok established that Thor's power doesn't come from Mjolnir, rather Mjolnir is a tool for him to focus his power. He isn't the God of Hammers. Except, apparently, he is - since Steve used it bring the lightning. Peggy's entire emotional arc in season one of Agent Carter (which, let me remind you, is a part of the MCU, just like all the other Marvel shows) was her mourning Steve and moving on. Plus, Peggy specifically tells Steve that he needs to move on in their CW scene (which was written by the Russos themselves!), but again, what canon? And as for that scene where Carol says she'll get the mcguffin to wherever it needs to go? Why? She has no connection with this. She's been off Earth for years. And, even though that female hero team up was friggin' awesome, it wasn't needed. Carol doesn't need help. Carol is so overpowered that her movie sent her off earth so people didn't ask why she didn't take out Thanos - we know she could've. I'm still asking why Fury didn't call her back earlier. Now, if Nebula had taken the mcguffin, and all the female heroes had rallied around her, that would make more sense. Nebula has a huge stake in all this, she's been here for most of this, she lost Gamora to this. It would've carried much more weight to have all the females heroes supporting Nebula. It's clear so much though went it to this movie, but it also clear the thought was all completely focused on the wrong things.

As another commenter on here pointed out - Endgame basically turns Peggy into Steve's prize. She's his reward. And don't even get me started on Bucky. Steve lied to Tony for two years, whilst taking his money and tech to look for Bucky, and then nearly kills Tony to protect his best friend, and they barely get a goodbye. I totally agree that Nat being the one to die is BS. Hawkeye already had his cool moments, he already murdered people; let him be the one to die. Black Widow had zero action scenes in Endgame, all of her emotional moments were in relation to the men in her life. I’m not one to let Bechdel tests ruin a theatre-going experience, but damn did they shaft Black Widow in ... really, every movie. Also the bald Wakandan lady is cool; they could have given her a Pym Particle and I would not mind, at all. This stuff didn’t bother me in the theatre because, damn is this movie awesome in nigh every other regard. The thing with Endgame is that it’s the end to Tony’s story, first and foremost. Given the constraints, I appreciate that they gave his end of the story priority to really close off that generation. However in the crossfire, the writers accidentally recreated the lack of diversity in the original movies, rather than overcoming it. It’s just laziness of concept, IMO. I am happy that Endgame is even watchable, let alone being as good as it is. But it is my sincere hope that they put more thought into the new characters moving forward. Valkyrie could’ve used a whole movie of character progression before becoming Queen, the bald lady could have gone on a heist, Captain Marvel is so OP that their only options were to give her something character-related weapons-down or do with her what they already did in Endgame of being OP in very, very, short bursts. Black Widow should have led the charge in the Endgame battle. Her and Cap side by side as soldiers, comrades, siblings, and equals. Cap with all his power leading one half of the army, and Black Widow with her tiny pistols, facing the alien horde without a drop of fear, leading the other half. Nat and Steve are equally the heart and glue of the Avengers and they should have led the battle together as equals; she’s badass because she’s underpowered and yet fearless. Literally anything can kill Black Widow and she still charges into the thick of it, every time. She should have been in the battle, front and center, first one to charge forward. Shoutout to Thor being regressed as a character, and Hulk’s arc being completed off screen as a joke. A lot of people got shafted in this movie.

I agree completely about the exclusion of Okoye, Valkyrie, and Captain Marvel! The entire damn third act until she (finally) showed up I was just like 'It's a shame Captain Marvel isn't here.' I like your proposed solutions as well since it would have set up Valkyrie nicely for her ending. Gawd the Russos can't handle female characters very well. The only one they wrote well IMO was Wanda, and that was likely because it was the most "simple" story. She loves someone (a man), but she needs to kill him. The inner turmoil didn't go beyond that so they couldn't mess it up. Gah, missed opportunities abound

I mean, in the moment I quite liked the final fight, and I’ve made my fair share of “Peter Parker mom squad” jokes since I finished up. But I absolutely agree with all of your points. Let’s be real, the MCU (and the Russos and Whedon in particular) are fucking terrible at handling female characters. 1. Nat’s death. There were ways that this could have worked better. Nebula should have realized that some shit had gone down. She was smart enough to realize that Gamora needed to die for Thanos to get the soul stone. But not only that, but Nat’s death should have carried more narrative weight than one little scene. At least give her a thing of flowers at the funeral. Make it a train, showing who everyone had lost instead of making Tony into Jesus for the fiftieth goddamn time 2. Nebula. She wasn’t even my least favourite part, and I still really like her character, but the reality is that GOTG and GOTG2 write her much better. The “I just wanted a sister” line made me more emotional than any scene in Endgame. 3. YES. Fucking the dumbest nitpick I have about this movie is that they play things so loose with the pym particles. They could have just said “oh, Hank has more in the lab let’s use them” and then just fucking used them and brought a few more characters onto the heist. Or they could have had those extra 5 seconds of Carol, Okoye and Valkyrie saying “y’all are dumb I have more important shit to do” 4. Carol. Just...I get that they made this movie before they made captain marvel. But the russos had two jobs. They had to give a sendoff to the original six and set up phase 4. When the potential future leader of the MCU can destroy a warship with her bare hands, you’ve gotta nerf her or take her out of the story. I get that. In a weird way, I’m glad that they didn’t try to have it both ways. She didn’t just show up at the end and say I RUN THE SHOW NOW BITCHES. But she’s a pretty weak plot device in this movie, and I think what annoyed me the most was that her defining role ended up being “gets thrown to who knows where by the power stone as a distraction for Tony to Jesus the shit out of this.” Like...do better Russos. Pls.

I'd definitely add Dr Faiza Hussain/Excalibur to your list. Even if that means we need Captain Britain to get her because 'being faithful to the comics'. Though, hey, if part of bringing that era of Captain Britain to screen was 'Dracula invades Britain from h is moon base' I could get behind that, but mainly I'd only want that in MCU to bring Dr Faiza Hussain in.

I think, the all the female characters in one shot moment was the worst? Like, we have nebula being tortured and then replaced with evil clone, as the only women with any role in the narrative for the last section of the film, and then all these female heroes who werent even allowed to be minor characters just cameos. in a girl power poster moment like, its pay off for female heroes but.. they didnt exist in the movie before then it was just like rubbing in how male the whole movie had been? also, tony gets a funeral and nat doesnt? Gamora is forever dead and replaced with new version. just no respect for female characters at all.

What frustrated me is that they could have solved 90% of the problems I had with Endgame just by involving Carol more. Send her with Black Widow and Hawkeye and for one, I wouldn't have to wonder why the hell they decided to send the two weakest Avengers to the one place they knew nothing about and two, there would have been some suspense that it would end different this time around. Plus, that would have been the perfect "enemy" for Carol, and a great opportunity to confront her with a problem she can't just hit. Had she been there in the scene at the lake, it wouldn't have looked like Black Widow sacrificed herself for "her boys", it would have been a reminder that she did it for the world. They could have explained that she or scarlet witch couldn't wield the Infinity stones because they have already the power of one running through them and even more of it would be too much. Really, this movie would have been better from start to finish, just by having Carol more in the mix. The woman power scene...I am split on it. On the one hand it feels like too little, too late. On the other hand, we shouldn't even notice that nearly all characters in the shot are female. So we need more shots like this, until we won't notice anymore. Though your suggestion regarding Nebula doesn't work because Nebula DOESN'T KNOW either. She just knows that Thanos went there and came back without Gamora. She most likely thinks that Thanos killed her once he got what he wanted.

Have you read about the fact that Natalie Portman chose not to be in Thor: Ragnarok due to a total bait and switch by Disney/Marvel? It was because of how Marvel treated its female characters that she didn't want to be involved further in the first place. I'm interested to see how Taika reincorporates her character into the Asgard mythos. Also, Steve's choice to stay in the past betrays what Peggy wanted for him and for herself, undermining her agency and their relationship development over their movies. Like you suggested, I don't think this was intentional; the writers just didn't even think about her at all.

I completely agree with you, it literally HURT me, how they IGNORED Natasha, and how they "forgot" to show her funeral, given how important and complex character she could have been if they they tried a littlebit harder... Anyways later on that,now let me speak about something different first. I think there is one more female character beside her, who is quite complex, and well written, and who you didn't really mention... And that is Gamora. To me, Gamora is a very well written character. I think they showed her whole development through 3 movies very well. First in the GotG movie, she starts of as a cold and distant person, who is strong, intelligent and independent, perfectly fine on her own, but whom's life is full of trauma and violence. Then in the 2nd movie and in the Endgame movie(what I consider her 3d movie lol) she begins to warm up, and starts a journey on the road of recovery towards self love and happiness; we also discover her gentle, caring and loyal side towards her loved ones(the dinamic and romance between her and Starlord is the best and most healthy rs in the mcu universe in my opinion). And as if this development wouldn't be enough, in the Endgame movie she has to face Thanos again, and that's where her character deepens even more. We learn more about her past, more about why she was what she was in the first film. the horrible loss of her mother, her kidnapping. We slowly start to see the relationship between her and Thanos, the complexity of it, how bad the abuse and manipulation really is, all the horrors Thanos did to her and Nebula. We begin to see how deeply these thing affected her, and so, we again discover another side of her. That's also the movie where she becomes a true hero in my opinion. The pain and suffering, self doubt, anxiety and fear is all back, but she fights them, she stands up against Thanos, she is even willing to kill him, to protect her friends and the universe, and eventually she does murder him (even if it's just a trick of Thanos) even if it shakes her and leaves her devastated(because in a twisted way she loves him ). This was such a hard decision but she still choose her friends and fought her lifelong abuser. Genius development really... (strange enough that the guardians of the galaxy movies seem like the goofiest ones, but they are surprisingly deep). And then comes my absolute favorite scene, the dead of Gamora, when Thanos takes her to the cliff to get the soul stone. This is the scene I'm gonna compare to the scene of Balck Widows death. Cause this is the point where even the blindest marvel fans saw what the directors DID to Natasha's character: When Gamora finds out what Thanos is gonna do to her, when she sees that Thanos is CRYING because he "loves" her, the DESPAIR and TERROR she feels before the fall, how she struggles and wants to escape, because she DOES NOT want to die, cause she's come such a LONG WAY, it took her so long to became HAPPY... What was where I felt FUCKING MOVED... That scene WAS the ultime sacrifice. Her character's dead became a key plot point, what was driving the whole story forward. Without Gamora fighting and then eventually loosing, Thanos would've never been such as frightening antagonist of the avengers movies. Without her dead we could've never understand the power of the soul stone etc etc. What I am trying to say is, that's what is MISSING at the dead of Black Widow. The build up. The long long struggle. I FELT the NEED TO KNOW her emotions a little bit more. And I GOT NOTHING. The movie litterally didn't show us ANYTHING. Only this cheesy arguing between her and Hawkeye... It's DIDN'T show her real strength when they just sacrificed her, cause the plot required it. It's wasn't at all female empowerment how she gave her life cause the directors didn't want to kill of Iron man or Captain Amerika like that. It almost FELT like they wanted to kill of a secondary character, but they also wanted some feminism, so, why not Black Widow? It would have been very different, if we could ACTUALLY SEE more of her struggles, as we saw it with Gamora. Her deep love for the other avengers, her guilt for leaving them behind, her regrets, her pain, her fear. No. Instead she just jumped to her death like an emotionless super spy, which she clearly wasn't anymore, as we already saw in the earlier movies. But I guess the directors just "kinda forgot about that." Her death DIDN'T AT ALL feel like a sacrifice. It was shallow and stupid and uncharacteristic. And then the BIGGEST CRIME was, that THEY ALSO LEFT OUT her funeral. I was so mad at the cinema. So. I know what you're saying. I got the same feel about Scarlet Witch, who just lost the love of her life forever, but that's not so but I guess. We'll just shoe her for one second and give her one line, here you go. And then the movie tried to say, hey, but we got this ALL FEMALE SUPERHEROES SCENE, as if I could forget the INJUSTICE they did to one of the original female avengers. Shame. Also, I definitely don't have a crush on Gamora. Hahaha. Also, english is not my first language, so sorry for the mistakes. Peace out

I also don't believe the family thing for Nat when every Avengers movie they act more like bregrugingly irritated coworkers annoyed that they have to work together or the world is doomed. The problems that Endgame has all come from 2 sources 1. Nebula is dumb I'm sorry. 2. Ant Man (and possibly Cap) has entirely too much screen presence. He's not one of the original six, but he has more screentime than both Black Widow and Hawkeye (and Cap more than Iron Man). Hawkeye and Black Widow needed that screentime to be around each other again, but instead we got the America's Ass comment.

Another quality rant. I'm optimistic they'll deliver on their implicit future-is-female promise for one main reason, the re-organization from late 2015 where Feige basically threatened to quit in order to get out from under Perlmutter who is to put it generously... a tightwad and notoriously skeptical of the prospects for female and non-white characters (and a friend-of-Tr*mp, so there's that). I think this is why the wave for representation came so late, too late for the love letter culmination in Endgame but also why I think the next saga will be different. Also a positive sign, in addition to a well-earned big payday reports have Scarlett Johansson with a producer credit on the Black Widow solo film, something none of the other MCU stars have had. Going back to the movie itself, Nebula provided one of my favorite emotional beats when she won at paper football. A small thing but as a callback to GotG 2 (the Gamora fight "you just wanted to win") I thought it carried a lot of weight and Karen Gillan really sold it convincingly. Then afterwards the way she gently picks Stark up off the floor and puts him in the chair really closed the deal for me on that scene and her character trajectory.

I can't defend the film on- like, 90% of what you're critiquing, because you're right all around. I will bring up the logistical issues that kinda- push things, to where they are. Jane isn't in the movie because Natalie Portman was done after how Thor 2 went so they used some cutting room floor footage from Dark World for that one scene. Sif, in every time Sif isn't around, is because her actress has a steady gig on Blindspot making her too busy to show up. Similarly as this was writing out the four out of six original avengers (Hemsworth seems content to come back for more Thor films after Ragnarok made him appreciate the character again, Renner is back at least long enough to train a new Hawkeye in a Disney+ series). As much as it poking at the gears and pulleys that make things work isn't pure storytelling, it does enter into things. As they did have to write closing moments for a ton of characters we've had for a long time. That bit of moving parts gets thready when it comes to 'killing Nat feels bad, but ScarJo wants out what can we do?' Now, with the characters they had they sure as hell SHOULD have done better working through Nat's motivations and reasoning. At least Nat + Clint on Vormir was a way better set-up for killing a female character than Gamora + Thanos on Vormir which was literally fridging for manpain. And giving Nebula more plot focus was absolutely needed given she has the biggest investment in killing Grape Flavored Cable.

Gwen Stacy is a perfect example, as well as Anne Weying and and Frances Barrison in the venom movies. One thing that makes them better is that they actually have FLAWS! Which makes them more grounded and relatable. Also, they don’t have to point out the fact that they are women or complain about their lives because they are women and they don’t blame men for their issues.

Okay, I find it pretty ironic you complain about MCU's treatment of women and then mess up Frigga and Freya. Guess pasting another 'Thor fat jokes aren't funny' (even tho they serve a pretty nice narrative purpose) was more important. ;-p 1. I'm pretty sure NEBULA DOES NOT know how to get the Soul Stone. She knows Gamora took Thanos to Vormir and he killed her, but by all logic, she'd assume she tried to stop him and he punished her. It also makes sense to sens two actual AGENTS to get the one stone they know nothing about since they're the ones who'd be able to adapt the best to the situation. 2, it's not 'kill a person you love most', it's 'somebody DIES' that \grants you the soul stone. It's a mathematical deal, one soul for one soul-stone. Otherwise, suicide would not work due to logical loop: you either love yourself more than other people, then you wouldn't be able to die for them, or you love people more than yourself, then you're not killing what you love most. It also exposes Thanos for the self-centered maniac he is, proving there was no love for Gamora in him. 3. Carol literally says she was a UNIVERSE worth of snap-fallout to deal with and Valkyrie has a village-worth of Asgardians to watch over since Thor is gone. And they both still come in the final fight. Okoye has a scene of thinking Natasha's insistence on Avengers stuff a little foolish (we act by not acting at all). 4. Hope, a daughter or Hank Pym, not jumping in to help Stark is good? She spends the entirety of the last movie working with just her father on a quantum realm heist to get Janet back. She'd just do it all over again. I agree it could've been better, but half of it sounds like you'd prefer them to break the characters to force them into something that you'd like more.

The entire fat Thor reveal was a joke. The way the camera panned over his fat body was intended to make people laugh. "Ha, look at how ridiculous Chris Hemsworth looks!" My whole theater burst out laughing at the sight of him. Imagine being a fat kid in that theater, having hundreds of people laughing at a fat body like that. What are you internalizing at that moment? There were also two more pointed jokes. Rhodie made a joke about cheese wiz, and Frigga suggest Thor eat a salad. Rhodie's joke was characterized by the movie as unkind, so I'll give that one a pass. But Frigga's wasn't. And it's something a lot of fat people hear regularly. Not okay. They were small and quick, but I remembered them because it was like a small stab in the gut in the middle of a movie I otherwise really enjoyed. Like I said, I like the idea of fat Thor. I'd love to see a story going in to more depth with his clear PTSD. And I also liked the culmination of his arc in the movie. He was fat and depressed, but he could still fight! But overall I think it could have been handled with a lot more compassion and nuance. And we know Marvel can do PTSD, because that's one of the main arcs in Iron Man 3. Granted, Thor didn't have nearly as much screen time because it was an ensemble movie. But if you can't take the time to properly explore things like that, you should probably leave them out.
@Sandreline
@Sandreline 5 лет назад
And I agree. I didn't like the tone they took with his alcoholism either. I don't think they're things that can't be joked about. I'm a fat girl, and the daughter of a alcoholic. I've seen the funny in both those situations. But you need to be careful about your ratio of jokey jokes to introspection.
@spiderlily723
@spiderlily723 5 лет назад
@@Sandreline That it wasn't too well executed I'll agree with, thou I took the salad joke as more of mommy thing with Frigga, like when my grandmother asks 'are you not starving yourself sweetie' when I visit home. I think if Thor was JUST fat it would've been much worse, but with the alcoholism and the crippling issues with self-worth/performance anxiety, it works as well as a PTSD arc can work in a movie with 50 characters. The Mjolnir scene fixed it for me just enough that I can give them a pass on the few bad jokes, but I get why for some it would be too many jokes.

That’s ridiculous Fandim Musings. The reason why the newer characters didn’t get the focus is that this movie was never going to be about them or their journeys. Being non white has nothing to do with it. It was a send off to the originals. The newer characters are taking over moving forward, their solo films gave them focus & entry into this finale but it was never going to be about them. Civil War blows a hole in your argument. Remember when Panther didn’t kill his father’s murderer while Tony and Cap were fighting each other? It was essentially the MCU having Panther take up the mantle as the new traditional hero standard who doesn’t kill when he has a choice. The movie was telling us in that moment that he was inheriting the throne while the originals were fighting each other. His solo film got much deeper focusing on him. We now know who & what he is and that he will be a core main stay post Endgame, he & other non white characters didn’t get focus because they had it previously which informed us they will be after Endgame and this story wasn’t about them. And suggest Hope being there instead of Ant man, hope didn’t have a daughter, she didn’t family who survived the snap, she didn’t as much of a deep emotional connection and she isn’t a team chemistry type of character but Scott is. Her being a woman had nothing to do with it. Scott is more entertaining. I’m not even saying the movie is flawless, I had huge problems with it myself but that line of thinking you mentioned is ridiculous

Do you think maybe "none of the original line up was non-white and only 1 was a girl (who didn't get her own solo movie) and then the female heroes we eventually got were given less development and time to develop chemistry with the rest of the cast" is......part of the problem?

I don't think it was "lazy" to not say out loud that Okoye/Valkyrie are looking after their people. Marvel pretty much says "screw you, you're not the only planet that's been destroyed by Thanos, I'm out" in the call. The other two running countries (or at least a village). Marvel and Okoye wouldn't even be that helpful, considering that they've rarely been around the soul stones to begin with. I don't understand why every detail has to be spelled out like that when it's very easy to infer.

Fandom musings: * complains that a super hero movie didn't have enough women as main, action characters who save the day just as much as men do. * Reality/real life: * contains the fact that most women are not at all like that whatsoever, especially when consulting biology for how the two (yes, only two, no more or less) genders develope over time as far as their ability to do the "saving" of the day as a hero, thereby meaning that men are always going to inherently be more physically able to be active and achieve more by being athletic * Me, (a straight, white male, God forbid😒) who has studied 8th GRADE biology and ALREADY knows this just like every other person who has even cracked open a science book before:😐
@Kabbaway
@Kabbaway 3 года назад
We’re in a fictitious setting with physics and rules which don’t follow real life. So-called “biology” and appeals to “reality” are irrelevant to this topic because most of the female heroes have powers or enhancements in some way or another, making them stronger than the average man anyway. To address your comment about two genders, once you get past middle school science you learn that it’s MUCH more complex than “XX vs XY” and that even if you disregard gender identity nobody is 100% biologically “male” or “female” - everyone has some level of variation in sex characteristics, and nobody can agree on an all-encompassing definition of biological sexes because they’re so diverse. It’s important to remember that there’s no simplistic absolutes in science - we STILL aren’t anywhere near close to understanding how our own bodies work, let alone our world or the universe/existence as a whole. Also, I’m sure you must have come across some other info - that social and cultural circumstances are just as influential in the expression of gender. Believe it or not, what you’re referring to are gender roles which have been drilled into us so we feel like we can’t deviate from it. Archeologists are finding out that women most likely hunted for meat alongside men, which makes sense because back then survival was a daily struggle so it would make more sense to adopt an “all hands on deck” approach. Can biological sex and genetics affect strength? Yes, but it’s not the only factor - our minds and the arbitrary social constructs we craft ourselves are a bigger barrier than anything physical. Upbringing, lifestyle, beliefs/values/opinions, personality etc also play a significant part in a person’s “strength”. In any case, even if women are “weaker” than men there’s nothing stopping the producers, writers etc from showing women saving the day with their own skills - agility, speed, stealth, willpower, intelligence/critical thinking etc. Strength isn’t the only factor that goes into how good a fighter/hero one is - what makes a hero is their ability to balance their strengths and limitations to work situations to their advantage so that they can prevent or mitigate damage. Considering this, there’s no reason why women can’t be more prominently featured as central heroes - MCU doesn’t conform to real life physics or logic (even if it did body diversity makes it too complicated to oversimplify people based on biological sex) and being a hero is more than being “athletic” as you put it.

@@Kabbaway If this fictional story cannot ever address the real world, then everything you just said cannot relate to the MCU as fact either. If you give an absolutist rule, you at least have to follow it within the sake comment.😂 And you saying that there is something other than male and female doesn't make actually it so. There have only ever been men and women on earth and no one was ever even been born from anything else. That is a scientific fact concerning literally every human's existence which has been studied for literally thousands of years, *long* before these very inaccurate and new gender theory ideals. And no amount of Buzzfeed articles or surgeries will ever change that.

So what’s your argument here? You want the MCU to not conveniently forget things or write things in as convenient plot devices? Ok, but thats not a gender issue, thats an MCU lazy writing issue. I mean even within this film they forget things. Early in the film (well the second act) they show Antman and Hulk experimenting with the time machine like Pimm particles like they were water only to later mention that they only have enough to make two jumps each for the team. Awful convenient. In other films Nick Furry explains that he lost an eye to a friend he trusted only to show that friend to be a spacecat that he just met. Steve fails to warn Tony that a mind controlled Bucky killed his parents conveniently allowing him to find out in time to have a knock down drag out fight with Steve and Bucky. You want them to not leave women out of the action in a meaningful way? Great, me to. She hulk is great. You want them to be well written? Cool, but thats a tall order considering how poorly written all of the MCU characters can be. You think the pandering A-force scene was a good addition to the final battle? What?! The whole scene was inserted into a pivotal scene in such a way that absolutely halted the pace and smacked of pandering to “feminism” viewers whilst simultaneously undermining feminism. These characters were literally doing nothing in the middle of a battle for the universe, granting them enough time enough to casually wait around, greet one another, and eye each other up before starting a charge where the team does next to nothing for the escort. Overall, if we are being as reductive as you usually are, that implies that female characters didn’t even need to be there. The whole scene could have been handled better. They could have assembled on the move, they could have actually worked as a team once assembled, and they could have assembled more naturally. You are lauding this scene but decry the scene where Nat sacrifices herself for her closest friend (as established by previous movies) to allow him the opportunity to reunite with his family? Even if the avengers aren’t family, Grant surely is. His children call her aunt for christ’s sake. If thats not motivation enough, what is? Sure it was convenient that those two got assigned the sole stone but it was also suuuper convenient that Tony and Steve got the Tesseract. Besides the lack of female characters (being addressed) the issues you have with the Russo’s really aren’t gender one. It’s their style in general. Nothing about there work seems to be centered around gender. Don’t get me wrong, they are valid criticisms but it seems like you are letting yourself get swept up in your politics here.

Fandom Musings but both Nat and Nebula are, in my opinion, up there with the better written MCU characters. I mention them as I would argue that they are leads in this film. If we remove gender from the equation and view them as human characters first we would see that Nebula is obviously a person who is recovering from an abusive parent who used Nebula as a means to an end and callously manipulated and brainwashed into doing his bidding. Thanos was using textbook brainwashing techniques to control her. It’s actually his most evil and villainous actions in the MCU. Every one of her actions appears to be motivated by a very reasonable (though thankfully not the most relatable) desire for revenge and the insecurity that would come from recovering from that. If we were to contrast her with Steve, he’s an insufferable do gooder who by sheer luck doesn’t let his ridiculous stubbornness get everyone killed ( he gets close though). We as an audience never really even get to see where the self righteous need to always do whats “good” comes from (or its so insignificant that I cannot bring that up to mind) We are kinda expected to give this bizarre character trait a pass because he’s: “Captain America, Super BoyScout, Super Solder, Super Patriot, and morally irreproachable Super Hero!” Luckily he manages to grow over the course of his movies, but still, his character was ridiculous by today’s standards. And you seem to be forgetting Pepper, who is the SECOND NAMED MAINSTAY MCU character appearing on film had a pivotal role in every iron man film and in Endgame as well. Thats as a secondary character, yes granted, but that is way beyond most of the other secondary characters in the MCU. Look, like I said earlier; your criticism are very valid. BUT, you really are letting your political bent dictate what you see. You are using your preconceived notions as blinders to avoid seeing all of the inconvenient factors that go to show you are really projecting your own views onto the film. In doing so, you color it as something worse that it actually is. That is very self destructive behavior and makes for weak sauce reviews.

Russo's and Marcus and McFeely seem to have an ultra efficient plot focused approach. Anything that does not further the plot is dropped, this works well for handling large ensembles but also means you get very few "character scenes."
