Ok, time to make everyone angry! No, no, really, I'm glad you are here. Thanks for watching the video. Remember to leave what female superhero you want in a movie in your comment! (I probably won't respond to anyone who fails to do this. lol.)

There are two types of people: those that want a She-Hulk movie, and those who don’t know that they want a She-Hulk movie.

I like Wasp and would love for her to get a solo film in the MCU. Unlike Janet in comics, Wasp is a headstrong and independent woman and has no need of Ant Man. She is also snarky as hell and would play well as a lead.

@@NicoEm oh that's completely fine, I thought you meant Janet overall as a character. I wasn't a massive fan of the MCU version If I'm honest, making her another scientist wasn't the best decision in my eyes, her being so different from Hank made her really interesting, like she had a large fashion company in the comics which was awesome. I totally get that critism on the MCU, I think I'm partly blinded by how much I love seeing these comic characters adapted.

I feel like we can't understate how much lesbian energy was coming off of this movie. I'm typically dense as a bag of rocks when it comes to romantic subtext... outside of the obvious writers' compulsion to put the male and female lead together by the end of every action movie for some?? reason??? (who likes it when they do this? they don't devote enough of the movie to the romance for it to ever be good! it's just that the male audience of the movie is supposed to project on the main guy so of course he's gotta get a girl, but for fuck's sake... when was the last time an action movie actually made that seem fulfilling.) but that tangent aside, even I could tell that there was something between Maria and Carol! THEY RAISED A KID TOGETHER. but also, I think Carol's look is one that seems geared toward being attractive to lesbian women. much like there's a difference between a macho male bodybuilder power fantasy dude, and a representation of male beauty that women would actually find attractive... there's also a difference between the sleek eye candy that men uphold as the pinnacle of attractiveness in women, and... Carol. Carol in her nine inch nails shirt with her tousled hair, strong jaw, cocky smile, the baseball cap, and the flannel... Carol in her awesome space suit with the heavy boots, flying through whole massive spaceships like it's nothing, firing off lasers, with the helmet that makes her hairstyle look like a badass mohawk... Carol in that white tshirt and beat up jeans coming out of the shed, distressed at having learned about her full backstory, as Maria chases after her, and you just want Maria to kiss her because it'd mean so much after all this time, and she's beautiful, and... yeah. there's a difference. it's not about how much skin she's showing, or how alluring she acts... she doesn't do that! not that it'd be a problem if she did, but it would feel so performative. and god damn it, I could imagine being at that bar with Carol on a date! I could imagine it being fun! because for all the fuck off powerful lasers that Carol can shoot from her hands, there's something really grounded about her character. when Wonder Woman is a fish out of water, she's got this air of nobility, combined with a slight naivety that is thoroughly charming... but she does seem almost too good to be real. she is Wonder Woman, capital Ws, before she really gets to be just Diana. meanwhile, we don't even really hear the title "Captain Marvel" applied seriously to Carol. she's just Carol. Carol is, at the heart of everything, a very confused human woman who is trying to do the right thing. she doesn't always know all the answers... in fact, most of the movie is about her trying to find answers. and especially in the way that she thinks of the skrull for the first 2/3 of the movie, her thinking is just plain incorrect sometimes. she's trying to figure out how to do the right thing... what the right thing even is. she's trying to clean up the mess in her head, and that's very human of her. and god... she deserved to come home to her wife and child properly. it was such a missing piece. and I think a lot of the white male heterosexuals who watched this movie picked up on the fact that, if we're all being honest with ourselves, there was no place for a white male heterosexual to "have" Carol in the end. the closest thing to representation that this movie gave heterosexual white men, was Carol's cree mentor dude from the beginning of the movie, and we all saw how pathetic he turned out to be. this movie straight up rejected that notion.

I was talking to one of my male friends at work one day about this movie, and at one point he admitted that he hadn't liked the character of Captain Marvel that much. When I asked him why, he said that he just found Carol less interesting of a main character since she came across as so serious and overly tough. Rather than get angry, I told him that since I once joined a Field Hockey class comprised completely out of boys and my mother and stepmother were in the male-dominated fields of chemistry and microbiology (where my stepmother in particular being a black woman stood out) , Carol's experiences and character rang very true to me. When you're in those sorts of male-dominated arenas, if you want to fit in or more importantly move up the ranks, you sometimes have to adopt more stereotypically "masculine" traits -- in Carol's case, stoicism, independence, and aggression. Many in our society still see a lot of those exact masculine-coded traits specifically as symptomatic of great leadership skills. And Carol's attitude is very familiar to anyone who has known a soldier, no matter what gender they were. Even my uncles who were veterans still have this lingering detachment about them that makes it difficult for them to show emotional vulnerability. And my friend immediately granted that I brought up a great point that he hadn't considered before given that he himself is a man. I think it's very possible that the backlash against Captain Marvel, even the kind that is predicated on this kind of casual sexism, is not all done consciously. But this is why it's good to talk about it and challenge those preconceptions. I love that you took the time to do this essay, and keep up the wonderful work! xoxo

@the1koolkitty
@the1koolkitty 5 лет назад
@@oof-rr5nf Yes, but compare how Steve and Carol are treated as soldiers. Steve was chosen to be Captain America *because* of his emotions, not in spite of them. He was chosen because he's a sensitive, merciful, kind person, not a hardened, tough bad-ass, and he's not forced to change himself that much to be a successful soldier. Everyone around Carol, both among the Kree and in the military she was originally a part of, seemed to believe that her emotions hampered her success, even though in the end she finally proved both of those institutions wrong. And admittedly the emotions that the Kree and American military tried to stamp the most out of Carol was her anger and defiance, in contrast to Steve's compassion and nobility which was rewarded.

As a woman who loves her Strong Female Leads I honestly felt that captain marvel was a pretty meh movie and it honestly could’ve been better. It’s not because of the fact it wore its feminism on its sleeves or that kind of bull crap but because the way the story was structured. The set up and twist weren’t bad but I felt that the tacked on inclusion of Ronin and the dragged ending really bogged this film down. And especially the ending because rather then ending in a scene that was very cathartic (Carol punching the mentor and sending him back) it added an epilogue that tied up things that were very obvious and the final scene that was basically after credit material. I do respect it for having some really awesome moments but for me the whole was weaker than the sum of its parts. At the same time not every girl power movie has to be a masterpiece - we also gotta embrace and celebrate the good ones to a certain extent.
@oof-rr5nf
@oof-rr5nf 5 лет назад
Agreed! It is not among MCU's best to me but I honestly can't find it in me to care about that. It is a female led action film + where the woman is never overtly sexualized + has no romantic subplot (unless you count Maria) + and was decent enough for me to enjoy. I was _ecstatic_ in the theatre lmao

The criticism of Gal Gadot had nothing to do with her serving in the IDF. Her defenders tried to make it about that, but that wasn't the point at all. Everyone in Israel is required to serve in it. It's not something she had a choice in. The criticism had to do with a 2014 Facebook post where she cheered on the massacre of Palestinians in Gaza, and parroted far-right conspiracy theories about Gazans using children as human shields.

Another thing: Diana has a lot of cutesy moments - loving the ice cream, gushing over a baby, 'I fight for loooove' and kills a Bad Dude to save the day; while Carol is mostly the knowledge-source for Fury, the most powerful in the movie, and a women taught to be calm and don't get emotional (look, a plot reason for her nor smiling, who would've guessed?) who then goes to actively help the Skrulls find a home. One movie has not only much more 'common' hero but storyline as well. Also, 'help the refugees flee from their oppressor', can you taste the symbolism in the air? +I disagree about the suit. While WW is not nearly as bad as JL crotch-shots, the clip even in this video shows Diana proudly go to fight in the trench... and focus on he naked tights. No to mentions the boob-plate.

I definitely think they weaved the idea of the female experience into Captain Marvel in a more poignant and understandable way, (though they could have spent more time on it, and if they had focused more on the inherent sexism of the US military it would have been a lot less uncomfortable to watch, but then they also wouldn't get that sweet military cash so I guess make your coin where you can? yikes). Anyways, I thought the climax where she tells Yon Rog (sorry if I spelled that wrong) that she doesn't need to prove herself was the moment where the movie REALLY hit the nail on the head. Carol is a similar character to Captain America, where she has some small character flaws (like her guns blazing attitude, or her emotional inaccessibility forced on her by her military lifestyle), but her real challenge in finding her power was pushing back against people's expectations of her as a woman. She had the power within her and people were hiding it from her and pushing it down all her life. Yon Rog and the Kree weren't the first but they are certainly the last. Watching her photon blast him into space was the most satisfying part of this movie, because I know I've had that exact conversation with men so many times in my life. She also ends up using her moral compass as a means to control and use her power for good. She no longer fights for the military on Earth or for the Kree, she fights to the refugees and those in the galaxy who need protecting, just like how Captain America lost his trust in government and went rogue. Hmmmm, I wonder why people aren't complaining that Steve is a mary sue.....

Oh, and as for female superheroes I'm waiting for, I am waiting for a Barbara Gordon-Cass Cain-Stephanie Brown Batgirl movie where Barbara is Oracle, Cass is Batgirl, and Steph is Spoiler who eventually gets a more Batgirl-esque outfit. The story would be about these two very different girls coming together and stopping some kind of street level plot their fathers have cooked up (Brown is a thief, Cain is an assassin). Barbara is their mentor/tech/hacker who is still dealing with not being able to be on the streets the same way. Cass can empathize/sense what people are feeling/about to do, has a very strong will, and is the best fighter ever but doesn't want to kill anyone but also has very little concept of the world at large (can't speak, can't read, needs to learn the intricacies of super villain plots) while Stephanie fills in Cass' gaps - she's a street smart poor Gotham girl who's really good at dealing with people and angry at her parents but needs to learn fighting and stealth beyond basic self-defense. Oh, and Batman shows up for like three seconds and Oracle tells him to shove it because she created Batgirl and she will do what she damn well pleases with it. Oh, and Cass will be learning to use sign language and emojis for communication purposes, you can pry that headcanon out of my cold dead hands, DC.

Captain Marvel was meaningful to me because Carol's most important relationships, the ones that spoke of who she really was, were with women. Contrast this with Wonder Woman, where the relationship that defines her is a romance with a man. This is certainly just my personal viewpoint as a butch ace, but the things that made Wonder Woman more palatable to general sexists made it less enjoyable for me.

As a straight male myself, I can buy that. Diana is a pure fantasy: a magical, head-breaking princess who is just "one of the guys" (how I wish THAT cliche would die already) who fought in a war 100 years ago. Carol is more of a topical fantasy: a regular woman of our era who has done nothing but fight uphill for as long as she can remember (and that was BEFORE the amnesia) against instuitionalized sexism of TWO planets to get anywhere and whose closest relationships are with females.

Now that Marvel owns the Fox properties, I want to see Rogue and Storm in the MCU. I think part of the backlash has to do with the comics. Many of the Captain Marvel comics over the past few years have been very political and vary in quality. That could cause people to already be biased against the movie. Also, the marketing wasn't great in my opinion. While there is nothing really wrong with what Brie Larson said, she could have said it a bit more tactfully. I do think the fact that this movie came out with only one movie between it and last years' Black Panther and Infinity War which were both amazingly written, acted, and visually appealing.

Love the vid! You’ve earned a new sub XD (Over the last month I’ve noticed that most of the pricks are overprotective because they think that Carol will somehow steal Tony’s (or Steve or Thor’s) thunder in Endgame. There were a bunch of angry reaction vids to the Endgame trailer about how terrible it was that Thor would get along with Carol in any capacity. There are a number of fans who are also pretty blunt-they can’t oogle Carol and remark that she has a flat butt. That’s part of the reason why they kept comparing captain marvel (as a character) to Alita and Wonder Woman. And I’m not just extrapolating, there are some truly disgusting reviews on RU-vid where they talk at length about how she’s not hot enough. Diana fulfills this “kick your ass and look good in heels” aesthetic, while Alita looks like a living breathing waifu. Carol looks like a lesbian SJW to them, the one who they think will call the police on every man who looks at her funny (Carol’s aesthetic has some very gay vibes too, and as a bi woman I love that! I love seeing a variety of female characters in personality and aesthetic. I think there’s a lot of value in seeing a woman who’s a Stark level smug asshole for at least part of the story. Carol is, but I still love her!) Also, excellent point about Diana being a softer type of feminist! It’s a lot easier for some men to absorb a character who has to learn that “not all men are bad people” rather than a woman who has to learn to to stop letting the men in her life control her. I also noticed that a lot of white dudes who tried to play the “you already have a good female led superhero movie” card failed to point out, for one thing, that Diana had a male love interest, while Carol’s relationship with Nick was all buddy cop level stuff and her relationship with Maria had a ton of LGBT subtext (they were married and told Monique to call her “aunt” so as not to draw attention to it) Anyway, While I personally think the movie itself could have benefitted from giving Carol a bit more time to cope with the new knowledge of her past (and letting Brie really go to town acting wise), I still really enjoyed what I saw. And I just want more. Let the diverse characters in!! Screw the 40 year old white men!! I personally would love to see a DC movie about Zatanna and a Marvel movie about either Katie Bishop, Spider-Gwen, or She-hulk. ;P

You mentioned the response to the actresses, but I think it's more than just Brie Larson. A lot of the Captain Marvel marketing was trying to be in-your-face that it was about a female superhero. I mean the first trailer had the "what makes hero a hero" with a massive emphasis on the HER (which, side note, really didn't translate well in other languages, and that was funny when I saw the trailer in French). Which I personally loved, but I imagine it would ruffle feathers as well before we got the movie's more challenging themes. Besides that I do have one tiny objection re:isabel maru as the "disfigured woman villain" trope, because while it's not *not* there, the movie's climax has Diana show mercy to her in a way that I found very efficient at portraying her as another victim in the war.

I had to look hard to find your video, just as I had to look hard to find truly thoughtful reviews of Captain Marvel in general. I was shocked that even reviewers I respected from mainstream newspapers did not delve into the ways CM subverted certain Strong Woman tropes while paying homage to 90's girl power silliness. That is a tough thing to do and I felt like the movie really spoke to me, as someone who grapples with pop progressivism cynicism a lot. Was watching this wondering if, at any point, Brie Larson's controversial statements were going to get brought up, but then I saw the little comment about Black Widow's arc in Avengers 2 and lost hope. And... thank you for proving me wrong, but it truly seems like it was glossed over. But, well, I saw hate for this film, people determined to hate it, long before the film came out. Focusing on the nature of Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel as "comfortable" or "uncomfortable" heroes seems to be missing the entire point. I admit I keep to myself in issues like this, but the stuff that's leaking into the quieter parts of the web tends to be leftover hate from before the film and then people basically saying that the film was boring. Adequate. And... well, they seem to be saying that that's not good enough, but as far as I can tell, that's because they were always determined to hate it, anyway. That turned into a longer comment than I intended. Sorry.

If I had to pick the next DC or Marvel superhero movie, I'd pick She-Hulk in a heartbeat (and hope it was at least partially a legal drama about the aftermath of something superhero related, instead of a straightforward superhero movie; starring Reese Witherspoon as Shulk). My second choices would be Ms. Marvel (specifically Kamala Khan) or Squirrel Girl. Just so the "Women/girl lead superhero movies" pool can be fleshed out with something more lighthearted (not that WW and CM don't have their lighthearted moments; just something that's more Spider-man: Homecoming in scope). Also, I very much doubt she'll get (or need) her own movie, but I'd love to see Victoria October make an appearance in a Batman or other DC Universe movie/series (partially because she's amazing, partially she factors into arcs that represent the "Redeem villains" aspect of Batman that most of the movies have ignored so far, and partially because dear god I wish there was more trans representation). Ideally played by Jamie Clayton.

To be honest, I'm not really into superhero movies that much. The only superheroes I really care for are the Sailor Senshi. However, I did find the huge backlash against Captain Marvel before the movie even came out cringeworthy. It also appeared to me that a lot of the premature backlash against the movie was because Captain Marvel is a strong, independent woman. Although, I've also heard complaints that Carol (Is that her name?) is a genderbent Captain Marvel (which is true, but so are a lot of female superheroes, so it's really nothing new) and that the movie is using a strong female protagonist as a marketing ploy to draw "gullible SJWs" in because OBVIOUSLY the movie CAN'T be that good, amirite? The Captain Marvel mentioned in the video (there's another Captain Marvel who is about to get a movie release in a few days - it's complicated) that Carol is a distaff counterpart to was never, ever popular. Not even a little. Literally everything around him was more popular than him; Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, the Kree and the Scrull, a few obscure villains like Thanos and Galactus. He's actually been dead for like forty years, killed off by cancer so you know it was for good. Carol has been around since the original Captain Marvel being a sidekick even before she had superpowers. Mostly as Ms. Marvel, so it's not like she's this random superheroine. In fact she's easily the most popular superheroine in the comics that Disney has the rights to use.

Also, Feige said around nine months before Captain Marvel got released that he intended to go more diverse with the MCU and that Captain Marvel would be the most powerful Avenger so far. That was roughly when the whole nonsense with tearing down everything Captain Marvel related started. I wonder why…(actually, I don't). I am kind of surprised though that you say that Captain Marvel doesn't deal with feminist themes. It is basically "Feminism: The Movie", an I mean this as a compliment. Mmm...how to explain? This is all on the meta level… I mean, just might have noticed that the movie is referencing a lot which woman have regularly to deal with. Like the whole "don't be so emotional" thing. For me the Kree basically presents a power structure which is forced on Carol and which has a lot of parallels to the kind of male dominated power structures females have to deal with every day. We are often told that we should clamp down on our biggest strength in order to play the game based on rules which were designed by males for males. That we should accept the power structure in place instead of questioning it. What the movie is basically saying is "don't allow them to brainwash you into accepting those power structures as something natural and unchangeable. Play to your strength and we might one day be able to set our own rules". And that is just incredible empowering. It kind of stuns me how many people miss this subtext. I mean, I am not that stunned that males do, to paraphrase Brie Larson "the movie wasn't made for them", but that so many females don't see those obvious parallels. To me Carol is another example of a new type of female which has recently emerged in the cinemas and which innuendo studios dubbed "The Avenging Female", using Fury Road as an example. And I really, really want to see more of this trope. (maybe you should seek out the vid to see what I mean if you have the time).

I loved this video. I think even beyond the overtly sexist crowd, I've seen a lot of (male) reviewers I respect kind of turning their brains of for captain marvel...like, they don't see, or i think, want to see any of the nuance or cultural themes happening. they stick to the flaws (and yeah, there's flaws) but refuse to acknowledge the positives, and in some ways I think it's just as bad as the overt trolls who 'reasonable' people can easily dismiss as such. it's more insidious when the 'reasonable people' are just as sexist, but are either cleverer about it or unaware of how skewed they reviewed this film. And yeah, even if the the mcu are cowards to not say maria and carol were in a relationship, they way the film explicitly frames parallels talos' family and carol's family (they both fulfill the same role in respective family units, and maria fulfills the romantic role in the larger context of the narrative) was pretty clear. so kudos to the creative team for slipping one past feige on that front. Also, how do you tell your girlfriend who you've been raising your daughter with that she's your romantic partner when she doesn't remember you at all, or your daughter? Like, didn't the scene when maria actually breaks down sitting at the table feel like she was feeling carol out to see if she remembered something between them? sorry, i lost myself a little there. It is rumoured that AoS is set to finish after its 7th season, so bringing some of the characters back for a movie would be a great move.

I appreciate your balanced approach. I'm not a feminist activist in any sense of the word, but there is something relatable in Carol for those of us that are more likely to neglect putting on makeup and just throw on yesterday's flannel. I also hope the same thing as you do - that we have a wide array of different female characterizations. I would love to see an actual arc for Violet (The Incredibles) in a future movie since I felt she just spun wheels in Incredibles 2. I unfortunately don't know a lot about female superheroes outside of those introduced by the MCU/already have strong characterization. Also, something I noticed in your video, it seems that the conversation keeps turning to the male population. Given that is the majority audience for MCU movies and that the "controversy" was mostly about mis-interpretted comments about said population, that makes sense. Additionally, everyone (meaning everyone) has the right to express themselves. However, I think that we're missing a larger piece of the conversation - what do other people think? I, a woman, had a lot of the same concerns that messaging would be too in-your-face and that Captain Marvel will become some ex-machina to Endgame (jury still out on that one). I came away from the film identifying with Carol (surprised? yes), and being interested in seeing Carol, who now knows who she is (completed self-discovering arc in film), coming up against really interesting, characterization-pushing problems, which I think the movie severely lacked. It's definitely a girl power movie and I felt the power, but I want her to be more than just "Carol you're perfect and always have been". I need to see her conflicted, to struggle, to suffer, and to victoriously overcome hardship in a tangible way, not just flashbacks of dumbasses telling her she can't do something.

Not technically a super hero... but can we please get a Skyward movie. Skyward is an indie comic from Image were one day the earth lost most of it's gravity, now some people live up in the peaks of sky scrapers and fly around with jet packs, and other try to maintain the old world with help of magnetic shoes. It's protagonist is a spunky young girl who I think is of Latino decent (it's never explicitly stated but that's just an educated guess on my part). The book is a really interesting social commentary, it's got amazing visuals (rain has never been more amazing or more terrifying), and it's just a really enjoyable read. Get the spider verse people on this and we'd have an amazing film!

Hmm...well, there's She-Hulk, of course. And Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel). And America Chavez (Miss America). And Doreen Green (Squirrel Girl). And Faiza Hussain (Excalibur). And of course, Monica Rambeau.

The fact that cpt marvel is female isn't the reason I think the movie is bad. Marvel push out a hlf story just to make her relevant in end game. I think if they took their time, the movie would've been better. And I wouldn't want a movie I want a show with a female lead. Like Hope summers, majik, Red Sonya, or wiccan( which was a young gay Male character)

With RDJ potentially stepping down from playing Iron Man, I think the logical next step is to introduce Riri Williams as Ironheart

These new characters are so poorly written and it is lame to just insert new kids into hand me down suits.

@@lunamalfoy7 No, these characters are boring. When it comes to Riri, I think the new writer is doing better and adding more personality and depth. But most of the new characters just want to take selfies, and talk about how wonderful they are. Traditional story telling in comics has always been a boys power fantasy, but struggle and failure and overcoming obstacles has been big part of the lesson. Watching characters pat themselves on the back, and everyone tell them how great they are is boring. Disney use to be ridiculed about the 'Princesses' always needing a man to save them. They got really good at telling new stories where the women took far more agency and told more compelling stories. Than, they decide they didn't want to be just a "girls brand"(their own words) and bought Marvel and Star wars but decide these properties need to be fundamentally changed to be more Inclusive for girls, than reduce the characters to girls power fantasies about being awesome and loved like a princess. It shouldn't be about how awesome you are, it should be about what you learn along the way.

I have a theory that Monica might end up being Ironheart, so it would be cool to see her in a future movie! Ironheart is pretty strongly linked to Iron Man, though. So for a standalone movie, Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan would be awesome to see!

@@Cinnamoncupquake If you're talking about Ironheart, that's totally fair. I haven't read any of her comics, I just saw a vague physical resemblance, and a desire to go to space and fly, and I got excited. If you're talking about Kamala Khan, could you explain?

I want a She-Hulk movie, full stop. She'd be a worthy successor of Bruce Banner and hopefully do something to change the conversation on female bodybuilders. Yes, I am aware that she's usually portrayed as having a gym model physique but wouldn't it be bold to have more bulk that is still attractive?
