In this video, Avi Oziel explains how to test silver with the ultimate fool-proof method using the very strong Neodymium Rare Earth Magnet. As some may know, a quick way to test for silver is by using a magnet, as silver is not magnetic and will not react to a magnet. So if the magnet sticks to the silver upon testing, it is a quick indicator that there is something other than silver in what you are testing, such as stainless steel or any other magnetic alloy.
However, when testing silver bullion, a simple magnet will not give you the most accurate results when you need to be 100% certain that what you are buying is 99% silver. Here is how to be completely sure by performing the test with a very powerful rare-earth neodymium magnet. Although silver cannot be picked up with a magnet, there is a different reaction between a powerful rare-earth magnet and pure silver as opposed to the reaction to adulterated silver. Tip the suspected bar at a 45-degree angle and place the magnet on the top end of the bar. If the bar is pure silver the magnet should slide down the face of the bar slowly. If the bar has been adulterated with lead, the magnet should slide fairly quickly down the bar. I just tried the same test on a piece aluminum and copper with a rare earth magnet and it acts the same way as on a piece of silver you need to back it up with a specific gravity test.

Hi there, Since copper is also diamagnetic, if the bar was silver plated over copper would it not present the same as a solid silver bar?

It's called paramagnetic. Copper has the same property and the magnet will slide just as slow

An induced electromotive force (emf) always gives rise to a current whose magnetic field opposes the original change in magnetic flux. This is not only applicable to silver.

Magnetic field crosses the metal, inducing a current. The resultant magnetic field produced from that current opposes the movement of the magnetic field and hence the magnet. A mini electrical generator . This works with any electrical conductor whatsoever, but to varying degrees. The effect is strongest with silver as it's lower bulk resistance gives rise to more current, hence more opposing magnetic field for longer. So to be sure, you need to use this effect under tightly controlled conditions. Look up "eddy current" for more explanation. If you already know how a magnet interacts with a bar of certain geometry, it can still be a useful rough and ready test and very importantly, those magnetic fields can penetrate deep into the silver.

copper behaves the exact same way as silver with the neodymium metals, so this can not distinguish silver from plated copper

Just to inform you gold is the best known electricity conductor to man kind next to that is silver then copper all these elements are used is today's electronics.. earth magnets have the same effects on all these elements. We don't use allot of gold or silver in electronics because of their values. Cost to much. So instead we use copper which is cheaper and Zink in which we gold plate or silver plate them still get almost the same conduction.. I can make a copper bar and multi plate it with gold or silver and get the same effect as your test. I suggest taking your bar in and test it. even a laser only reads the surface. Have your bar drilled in 2 locations center and 1/4 of an inch from corner of the bar.. why? Because even some ppl will go as far as filling certain areas of the bar with copper and selling it at full value.

Unfortunately, this is not an accurate way of testing silver... If you observe the periodic table you will find that Cu (Copper) is directly above Ag (Silver), which tells us that they share similar properties... Additionally, this EXACT same thing will happen with Cu. So if an enterprising thief were to simply plate Cu with Ag, this test would never know the difference, and it would behave exactly the same. There is no fool-proof way to test precious metals, other than cutting them in half... Sorry folks. :-(

Silver Money .999 Well, even the specific gravity test can be faked (although thank you for reminding me!), for example, Tungsten and Gold have a very similar SG, so although I did say 'cut them in half' as being the only way, if you go through multiple tests, the magnet test, SG, weight, and the 'Ice Test', you should be able to verify that the silver in question is not only real, pure silver, but if it has a false core or not (mostly the ice test will verify this, if it is pure silver the ice will melt *almost* instantly, as if on a hot surface)... There are some other tests, but they are more surface tests that can't identify if it is silver throughout... I am sure that I have forgotten another test or two, I tend to be forgetful about such things... :-)

This is not a test for purity of any metal. The sliding of the magnet induces currents in the metal that oppose the motion of the magnet, thus slowing it down. Try dropping a round magnet through a copper or aluminium pipe and this effect will be seen to slow the magnet to a gentle float as it drops.

Not one of Avis's better videos. Many discrepancies in what he's saying. The real kicker was when he was showing the magnet slide off the green metal box....but the magnet was upside down!!! So it would not have any magnetic pull.
