In this video, I describe what a capacitor is and it's use on circuit boards and then compare the difference between ceramic and tantalum capacitors. I cannot stress how rare and valuable tantalum capacitors are and that they should be removed and set aside for its precious metal content is even more rare than gold. Tantalum is a very rare precious metal that is in high demand and on short supply worldwide. These little mustard colored capacitors should not be discarded as they they are worth $80 a pound.

What is the chemical procedure for recovering Tantalum. I really need this for a experiment in my college and I can't find any procedure i only see videos of gold and silver recovery

So I heard that the circular capacitors are t at tantalum only the oblong shaped ones contain it

One other thing - some of the Rockwell flatpack chips like the ones at 5:18 are a hybrid design and have a ceramic wafer inside the plastic with gold on it.

Also I forgot to mention the things you were calling monolithic ceramic capacitors, where Not. Mlcc are brown with silver soldering on each end. And on the board itself it will be marked with a "c" aside of it, if it's marked with any other letter then it's not a capacitor of any kind. Hope this all helps, I've gotten into Ewaste and I'm researching much info so I thought I'd take this time to share information for a change

Not all that is tantalum is yellow. There are also BLACK tantalum capacitors and mill spec cap's. Looks like little silver tube usually bent over on the board. Black ones look very similar to the MLC's.

At 1:40, you held up an aluminum electrolytic capacitor and called it a ceramic capacitor. I'm not even sure how you could confuse that because there is nothing ceramic in an electrolytic capacitor. Tantalum capacitors are also a type of electrolytic capacitor, which is why they can have much higher capacitance than non-polar capacitors. Also, at 5:29, you said all of the little boxes have palladium and platinum. The majority of them are resistors, not capacitors. Resistors are typically made of very cheap materials. There is some tantalum nitride or ruthenium oxide in some resistors, but you would be wasting your time and materials trying to extract those out of all the various SMT resistors found on circuit boards. At 10:05, you called the tantalum capacitors the power supply of the card and also said that the data is stored in there. The power comes from the power supply of the computer, quite obviously. The data is stored in the microchips. Electrolytic capacitors are very low quality capacitors, typically having a tolerance of 20%. Data storage has to be precise. The reasons tantalum capacitors are used are their size efficiency, low ESR, and high thermal tolerance. When you can't fit a tower-like aluminum capacitor on a circuit board, a tantalum capacitor is used. When minimum resistance is a requirement for a certain circuit, tantalum capacitors are used. When the circuit will have to tolerate temperatures that could almost boil water, tantalum capacitors are used. Besides that, great video. I liked the "Don't eat them" joke. I also love how you're learning about the various components of a circuit and how you encouraged viewers to learn about circuitry as well. If I were you, I'd scrap the inductors for the copper as well. Most inductors are cylinders that are shaped similarly to aluminum electrolytic capacitors but much shorter. They're a coil of copper around a magnetic bobbin, usually enclosed in a magnetic casing that's painted black. The casing can often be somewhat of a cube instead of a cylinder. Other inductors are the clearly seen rings with copper wire wound around them. Relays (usually large, black boxes with at least four pins) also contain an inductor that acts as an electromagnet. If you're going through the trouble to scrap the tantalum for $3 per pound, scrapping the copper from inductors and relays should seem like an easy, pretty penny.

Paul Haig I posted this so long ago. I'm not sure where I got that figure. If I had to guess, I would say that he said that he scrapped the tantalum capacitors for $3 per pound of CAPACITORS, not per pound of tantalum. However, that's just a guess on what I meant. I'm not gonna rewatch the whole video to check.

Thanks for the great video, Avi. Do the Ta caps need to be carefully removed or just pulled/scraped from the boards? Just wanted to confirm it's the precious metals not the reusable aspect.

The capacitors do not need to be carefully extracted because it does not matter if the capacitors are broken, All of the Tantalum Capacitors end up being Scrapped in a full chemical process.

I'm still struggling to identify Tantalum. I have 300lbs of boards out of old medical equipment from the late 80's and they seem to be covered in tantalum capacitors, I'm just not sure how to be sure about them. Some are skinny and long and some are the same old little boxes, not to mention others that look the same but in red, blue, and black.

The rarity and demand gives it (ta) it's high value. Gold is more plentiful but is in higher demand because of it's versatility and many more uses.

@macfixer01
@macfixer01 9 лет назад
Like most of the tantalum videos on RU-vid you are repeating some of the same misinformation. Tantalum is not worth more than gold and never will be! I can only assume you meant that tantalum caps are much more plentiful on a given board than gold-bearing parts, but your statement is misleading. Especially so after you just before that claimed tantalum is "rare" which obviously it is not. Pure tantalum metal may be worth in the range of $80/pound, but only a fraction of a capacitor's total weight is tantalum metal. Capacitors will have only 2 contacts. The 3 pin yellow device you pointed out at 5:58 is a Crystal as identified by the XT1 designation on the board next to it. The solder on it's leads may or may not contain some silver. The main difference there is that the crystal had to be soldered by hand and couldn't be flow-soldered like the rest of the board because of the way they chose to mount it inside a hole in the board. You'll note the blue electrolytic cap C14 right next to it is also mounted sitting in a hole to keep the board profile very thin, and it also has the same hand-soldered appearance. Also as a whole, tantalum capacitors do not mostly have a yellow color since there are so many types and shapes of tantalum caps. The yellow color is only most common for the surface mount variety. Last but not least I don't believe the "oval" component you showed at 2:15 is a tantalum cap at all, it appears to be either a varistor or more likely a ceramic dipped capacitor.

Dude, thank you. You gave me more information as I'm transitioning into this wonderful world then anything I can find on RU-vid or website. Also you mentioned that yellow is the most common color 4 surface mount but there are other colors right? I see a lot of black ones on mine. Various shapes as well which makes me think what I'm looking at is not a tantalum capacitor even though it has a c designation. You may not read this but perhaps by chance if you do... Is there somewhere you can refer me to where I can get comprehensive information all motherboard parts or circuit board parts. I don't want to be wasting my time taking stuff off that I don't need to or missing things that I should be taking off. Appreciate it.

Funny that i see this video just after i called it day sorting through stuff. I am about half way though sorting a 5 gallon bin i used to dump all the capacitors,oscillators,monolithic capacitors,pins,chips into while depopulating a weeks worth of boards. There really is a lot more worth on those boards then what some people are lead to believe. So much copper on the boards. I keep everything and anything that has a trace of gold on it,because it all goes into the chemical wash. By the way those silver looking little oblong things are called crystal oscillators. There is usually about 1 or 2 on each board,.sometimes up to 4..do collect them as well. Crystal oscillators have a small amount of silver and another metal in each them,be surprised how fast collecting so little soon accumulates up to a lot!. Thanks for the video Avi.

Christopher Younger. Tantalum mineral as a commodity can be more expensive...I'm assuming...not the capacitor. E-waste scrap gives the lowest return as you may know...but the high grade ta powder is another matter.

I think you have some of your info mixed up for a few reasons... - that yellow thing with 3 legs is not a tantalum capacitor, tantalum capacitors only ever have 2legs/ends -there's also black tantalum block type capacitors - there's Also yellow and blue "stand up" capacitors, these type are always clearly marked for their positive and negative side -those yellow round "stand up" style capacitors you showed are Not tantalum, tantalum is shaped in more of a teardrop style not round

considering that you wrote this only a few months ago i think i should let you know that gold is $1,000+ an ounce currently at the time im writing this it is 1,333.50 an ounce which is far more then 80/lb
@32Clinton32
@32Clinton32 10 лет назад
Sean lastname He is saying, that it's $80 a pound for the capacitor itself. If you were able to extract the metal itself, then it would be a much higher price. The equivalent is, that gold is worth over a grand an ounce but if you are selling the gold plated fingers, then you are not going to get a grand per ounce.. You would have to extract the gold from the fingers..
@Beirdo1
@Beirdo1 10 лет назад
Clinton Billman No, tantalum itself sells for about $80/lb. It is not a precious metal, although it is rare, and these capacitors do have value. Additionally, not everything yellow on a board is tantalum... For example, at about 6:00, he showed a three-legged part that was clearly not a capacitor. It was marked XT1, which normally is a part of an oscillator.
@32Clinton32
@32Clinton32 10 лет назад
I see what you are saying. I was just going by the video and then making it, make sense to me. So what you are basically saying, is this guy in the video, only has a fraction of a clue?? That is becoming a downfall to RU-vid.. There should be some way of cleaning out the wrong or misleading information. Not to mention, the completely time wasting material that plagues current RU-vid.. Thanks for reminding me, that you can't go by what you see or hear... Like the old saying," Believe none of what you hear and only 20% of what you see"..
@Beirdo1
@Beirdo1 10 лет назад
Clinton Billman I'm sure he has plenty of clue about gold recovery, but it seems his circuitry knowledge is a bit low. The square yellow capacitors (polarized) are tantalums, yes, and tantalum is basically only to be found in China last I heard, so it's an issue for circuit design costs, etc. Yes, the capacitors have value, so don't toss em. But you aren't likely to get rich off them at all as even a pound of those capacitors, well, that's a lot of capacitors to only get $80 anyways :) Also, tantalum capacitors (with legs) also can be other colors like blue, and I think I've seen other colors as well. Basically, when I clean off an old board, I don't throw out anything but the board itself and any purely plastic parts. But then again, I'm a packrat. I'm sure I'll find a use for them sometime, or a buyer. And it's fun.
