Avid CNC Spoilboard Version 1 is my first attempt at a spoilboard and is intended to only be a test bed of hold down features for me. I intend to experiment and learn using this 'temporary' spoilboard and will soon develop a more permanent solution that works well in our shop.

Learned a lot from this video. Thanks for having the courage to show us the mistakes as well. I'm sure the experienced CNC people saw that HDPE difficulty coming, but I myself did not and it gave me a lot to consider when I'm clamping. Also, could you post a bit more about specifically what diameter hole and bench dogs you found to work the best for you? I expect some variation from machine to machine, but the number that worked for you could be a great start for others.
@MattesonCreations
@MattesonCreations 3 года назад
Thanks Alan. I hope I can continue to help people learn ... even if it is from a lot of my mistakes! I certainly can add more detail about what finally worked. All bench dogs are going to be slightly different, but I can provide specifics on what dogs I used and what holes worked well for me. I am working on my spoilboard Version 2 and will include this info once I decide which bench dogs I will go with.

Nice video and thanks for sharing your thoughts along the way. I'm on a much smaller CNC, with aspirations for a nice Avid this year. Have you considered painter's tape and CA glue for holding projects down? It's my favorite way to do so.
@MattesonCreations
@MattesonCreations 3 года назад
Great point about using the painters tape. I should have mentioned that. Its amazing how strong that holds. I'll include that in my Version 2 video as it is a really good option. Thanks for the comment!

I'm making sure that the 49" goes along the "X" axis and the 48" goes along with the "Y" axis? I am about to do this, but I just wanna make sure I have it oriented the right way.

Very good video! Silly question but where did you source those really cool red bench dogs. I like how they match the Avid. Also unless I missed it what size are they and what size did you end up milling your spoil board out out to accept them? I think The avid spoil board calls for 3/4” bench dog holes. Thanks in advance!
@MattesonCreations
@MattesonCreations 3 года назад
Hey thanks for watching. I’ve been a subscriber to your channel for a while. I already had a festool MFT3 table, so I modified the avid spoil board file to cut the dog holesto match dogs I already had that were used in the MFT3. The red dogs are from woodpeckers. The post diameter as I measured it for these was 0.782. I think I ended up cutting my dog holes 0.786. However, they are pretty snug and when I do Version two of my spoil board I will probably cut the hole a little larger because they can be difficult to get in and out at times.

Thanks for the info! Can’t wait to see version two of your spoil board. My Avid Pro 4848 is still about two months out. I am a hot mess trying to plan my spoil board system. I’m used to T-track, but like the versatility that bench dogs offer for lateral clamping pressure, especially for panel surfacing, etc.
@MattesonCreations
@MattesonCreations 3 года назад
Well congrats! You will enjoy the Avid. I hear you on the spoil board. I researched it forever yet got nowhere. The best relief I got was when I finally realized ..... it doesn’t need to be perfect right away. Start with something functional and figure it out later. That said, I did get some T track but I’m not willing to give up my dogs ..... going to go with a combo for version 2!

I have been considering an Avid CNC for sometime now. I have been interested in 4848 machine but recently started thinking maybe I should get the 60x60 so holding down a 48" wide sheet goods would be easier. Im curious what your experience and thoughts are on that, it would be an extra $800 at this time?
@MattesonCreations
@MattesonCreations Год назад
My theory is if you have the space, and you have the budget, you will never regret having a larger CNC. I have not needed larger than my 48x48 yet; however, I was asked to do a dining room table project last week that I would love to use my CNC for but it may not be big enough.

Try using double-sided tape to hold parts down along with a screw in each corner.

I'm thinking about ordering one but the leg kit is kind of costly. What size 80/20 did they use for them? thanks
@MattesonCreations
@MattesonCreations 3 года назад
Hi Dan. Are you just asking for the dimensions of the base pieces? If so, they are 3" x 1.25" I hope I'm answering your question. I hesitated on the leg kit as well. After a while I decided even if I built my own base but put some time and effort into it, it would still cost me a few hundred bucks .... and more importantly, a lot of time. I'm happy with the leg kit but I would agree that if you had a solid plan for a base, then it is something you could do without.

@@MattesonCreations Thanks for the reply. 600 bucks is kind of steep I thought. I was going to price it out on 80/20 myself and see what the mark up Avid is getting on it. Would you mind measuring the leg length for me and the support cross members? Thanks again

It’s been about 10 months since you posted the video. Is there anything you would do differently?
@MattesonCreations
@MattesonCreations 2 года назад
Hi. Thanks for watching and thanks for the question. So the short answer is the spoilboard worked perfectly fine, but yes, I have made changes. I'm currently editing a video with my current spoilboard. My biggest issue was holding work down to the board. I opted not to cut out large holes for clamps, which would have helped. Instead I found myself screwing work to the spoilboard. I'm putting out my version 2 video here in the very near future, it uses more of an integrated hold down system. If you are subscribed you should get the notice when it is published!

Good afternoon! Thanks for watching. I hope you subscribed! The only pre-cutting I did was to cut it to dimension front to back, which was 49" This allowed it to line up perfectly with the first and last cross brace. All the other cuts were done by the CNC.

Hi Todd. This is the pro 48x48 so the base kit is currently $5265 on the Avid website. That is the base kit only, so keep in mind there are other accessories you need to complete it and actually make it functional. I am happy to answer any questions at any time!

Good morning. I have had a great customer service experience with Avid so far. I know they are very busy these days and another person on youtube told me they had to go to their website and fill out a form to schedule a sales call with customer service. Sounds like that is the best approach. I'm not sponsored or affiliated with them in any way, but I have had a great experience so far!
