Description:
New York’s JFK Airport if a popular airport for both tourists and locals to fly in and out of New York City. Public transit is pretty easy to use at JFK but most options require using the AirTrain which charges at the the stations where the NYC subway and Long Island Rail Road (LIRRR) are located. As of March 1, 2022, the new AirTrain fare went up to $8.00 - which is pretty steep considering that it was only $5 four years ago. But did you know there are ways to get around paying this full price? There are two options and in this video we will talk about both: (1) getting the 10-trip AirTrain MetroCard and (2) taking the bus.

Be aware that the AirTrain metrocards cannot be loaded with the $33 7-day unlimited rides, if you intend to get that after leaving JFK. My friend passed me his (Airtrain) metrocard and the option didn't show up on the machine. I had to buy a regular metrocard to in order to load the 7-day unlimited ride option.

I took the Q10 bus to get into JFK after connecting from the subway at Kew Gardens. Just follow the people lining up for the free connecting bus. This is a good option if you have plenty of time to spare for your flight. There was significant traffic at the end stretch of my bus trip.

Next week I'm going to USA first time (JFK airport). Your channel helps me a lot ! Thank you. I'm gonna try Q10 bus and transfer to E subway line. To be able to use credit card (OMNY) on bus and subway is so convenient for foreigner like me. ^^ Hope everything will gonna be OK.

Good luck! Just a fair warning, the Q10 to the E will take about 45 mins to an hour. But if you are ok with that, you should be fine. Have a great trip!

I'll be in NYC next month and your channel is the most helpful compared to all others in laying out all the commuting options in this and other videos. Very appreciative of your channel. So if I get the 10 ticket metro card and then get the 7 day unlimited subway card, I will need 2 separate metro cards. Do they look different as how can I tell which metro card is which? Thanks.

I just came back from NYC for a quick weekend getaway! No luggage, I took Q10 leaving the airport and B15 back to JFK. Just used my Visa Pay Wave for everything. Never touched any MetroCard. One thing about the A Train: Either you take it at Howard Beach or Lefferts Blvd after taking Q10, service is infrequent (in big city standard, and because service already split up) so be sure to check arrival times on your phone and not to miss the train!

Behind the Kew Garden Station is the LIRR to Penn Station (Manhattan )$10 at the machine. On the train is double the price. The ride is 18 minutes and is safe during the day, but I would never go there once it’s dark.

It's like you read my mind. I was just telling a friend about how to get to JFK from your previous video :) Also, if my analysis is correct there is no need to get a bus at all at Leffters Blvd Station. According to Google Maps, walking from that station to Howard Beach JFK Subway station is about 11 minutes. So you don't have to wait for the bus if you don't want to. (Love the new Theas :D)

Does anyone know whether the Howard Beach Station can be accessed from the Long Term Parking Lot at JFK? If that's the case you just have to get off the airtrain at Leffters Blvd. St. and walk through the parking lot.

I suspect it isn’t possible to get from the parking lot east of Howard beach to the Howard beach station without paying the airtrain fare, they’ve probably blocked it off, but I haven’t been there so idk.

Cool also you should’ve addressed those metro card scammers that be at Sutphin Blvd jfk staton. I’ve seen a few videos where those scammers would ask ppl specifically the tourists leaving the city heading towards air train for their metro card and would claim they won’t need it to get on the air train even though they do in which they get scammed.

Me personally, I don’t have the best experiences with the places this video can tell you to go when you take the bus (I almost got assaulted at Lefferts lol) so my advice, tread lightly, be wary, some of these parts can be quite dangerous.

We hope to buy the 10 trip aircard as we will both be using it to go from and return to the airport. There are machines at both ends of the AirTrain, so you will be able to buy your 10-trip card before you exit. Have a good trip!

There’s also the wackiest option: get off at lefferts, and then walk 20 min to the Aqueduct conduit subway station. I’m sure luggage that will be a lot of fun 😎

Very good video. There are not too many videos with this information about the bus at Lefferts Blvd. So, if I wanted to get the Q10 bus from Lefferts Blvd Air Train St, do you maybe know or have information if there is somewhere on the way(from the Airport) to either buy a Metrocard or refill one (put a unlimited 7 day)? Thats may be the biggest obstacle for this route. I know you can tap your credit card in the bus, but Im interested in Metrocard in particular. Thank you

Hi there. I think the only places to get a MetroCard are at Jamaica and Howard Beach. If you really want a MetroCard, you might have to ride the airtrain all the way to Howard Beach, get a MetroCard, then ride the airtrain back to Lefferts Blvd.

Hey there. The bus stops were changed since that last video. Right now, Terminal 8 only has the Q3 bus. Lefferts Blvd Station has B15, Q3, and Q10.

Hi there. Yes, just pass it over to the next person using it. It can be used up to 4 times consecutively. After that, it "resets" and you can't use it again for another 18 minutes. So if it's just you and your gf, then it should be fine.

Please know that the man at the newspaper kiosk (02:52) took a huge tip for himself (unilaterally) when he sold us the card. He gave us back less money than was due. Next time, we will probably use the machines.

Great video. Lefferts Air train station looks so close to the terminus at the A train. Could you simply walk the short distance to the subway station, thus avoiding the $8 charge? It looks to be less than a half mile away.

I'm not sure. It looks like it's just a parking lot that you have to walk though, but I'm not sure if there are any rules around it. Maybe not? Always worth trying. The worst that could happen is you get back on the AirTrain to get to the A train and pay $8 (or take a bus). 😅

Can confirm you can’t, tried it once. There’s no way to get around the turnstiles unless you have someone let you in the subway station via the emergency gate in the parking lot.

I think the 10-trip is only at the newspaper kiosk. I haven't been to JFK in a while and not sure if they are still selling the 10-trip. They've changed pricing on the AirTrain twice since this video.

What if you walked the 7 or so minutes from Lefferts Blvd to Howard Beach? Then you just completely bypass the Airtrain fare at the expense of 7 minutes of walking.

Hi there. There should be one right before you get to the buses. But if you have a credit/debit card with tap-and-pay, you can use that on the reader as you board the bus.

@@henkd6159 You're right. An older article online is saying there are no machines at Lefferts, but newspaper stands in the airport sell MetroCards (I'm just not sure if there are a lot of them). This maybe a bit of a hassle, but you can always go to Howard Beach (one more stop on the AirTrain) to get a MetroCard, then go back on the AirTrain to Lefferts Blvd. The easier option is to use the OMNY. Hello there. There aren't any ferries from JFK to Manhattan. The cheapest option (if you don't mind spending time) is the bus to the subway. I'll see if I can make an updated video on the ferries. The New York ferry mostly goes up and down the East River and to the beaches during the summer.

That is a really good question.🤔 Technically Roosevelt Island is part of Manhattan. But I honestly don't know. If it's not part of the flat rate, you can always try to negotiate for the flat rate by saying it's so close to Manhattan. But I would ask before getting in line for the taxi so you don't waste time.

Bus stations don't have Metrocard machines. But you can pay with your phone or tap with your card.

Hello! 👋 If you are by yourself, the 10-trip airtrain pass doesn't make sense (making it better to just get one unlimited and add enough money to pay for the airtrain). But if you are with someone else then yes, getting the 10-trip to share and an unlimited metrocard would be better (but you can't share the unlimited metrocard for the subway, you each would need your own). And you can avoid the $1 fee if you buy the 10-trip airtrain from the newspaper kiosk. I hope this makes sense. Let me know if it doesn't. Hope you have a great trip!

I read online when you purchase unlimited card you need to activate it first by using metro and after that you can add money. Which is not ideal situation if we are coming from JFK, need to pay for AirTrain + metro within few seconds. I did not find this info online and its little bit confusing :) but if AirTrain is 8$ now and they did not change cost for 10trip, its better deal as we will use it 4 times (32) as you explained.

Very helpful video. My wife and I can definitely make use of a 10-trip airtrain Metro card this month on a visit to NY to save money. Question to anyone that can answer: If I buy a single 10-trip Metro for my wife and me to share and get from JFK to Mid-town Manhattan, do I need to add more $$ to the card to cover subsequent subway fares while we're in NYC? Ie, does the initial $25 cost for the card cover fares towards airtrain rides? I'm wondering how the Metrocard keeps tabs on how many airtrain trips have been taken vs. the monetary value on the card that can be used for other transit modes? Hope that makes sense...Thanks in advance.

Hi there. $25 pays for 10 trips on the AirTrain and not the subway. This is a special MetroCard that is non-refillable. To pay for the subway, you need to get a "regular" MetroCard (this will require another transaction). Hope this helps!

AIR TRAIN sucks. If you want to see proper transit, go to Asia or Europe and get into the terminal from the city in ONE RIDE. Because the EINSTEINS at NYC airport council decided to go cheap, we now have a second rate system that requires you to haul ass and your bags down stairs and around and about.. Absolute second rate bush league, a total embarrassment. America, vote in people who will spend on good transit or suffer this SHAME.
