AVOID Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips in Times Square NYC a PATHETIC SHAMEFUL ATTEMPT at a BRITISH CHIPPY 

I can't get over the $25.02 price tag for one setting of fish sticks and French fries.

Inside our Philippine subdivision, we made an acquaintance with a retired gentleman from Belgium. During his working life, he worked as a chef and ran several restaurants. It is not easy to source the same quality of ingredients as he was used to in Europe but he has learned how to shop at our wet markets. Our friend decided to try making British-style fish & chips. Unless you pay big bucks for imported cold water deep sea fish, you have to use disgusting cream dory. It is very soft and often mushy if you purchase the lower grades of that fish. My friend researched what he wanted to accomplish and garnered the recipe used by the Queen of England's chef. Let me tell you, the product was honestly very good, notwithstanding the use of a not-so-great fish. In the beginning, all fries were hand cut but eventually, my friend purchased a machine with several blades that would slice a peeled potato in one go. If a retired EX-pat can do this in the Philippines with warm water fish, I am sure it can be done in New York City with high-quality ingredients.

I struggle to believe Gordon Ramsey has anything to do with these places apart from sell them his naming rights.

If this is what represents British Food overseas I’m not surprised the international community think our food is rubbish. Gordon Ramsey, come on, take some responsibility!!!

I honestly thought that was a child’s portion,the fish would be classed as fish bites at my local fish shop, no name fish (cod or haddock or anything else for that matter, as you say, Ramsey needs to visit Yorkshire to get some idea as to what fish and chips really are, mushy peas, tea and bread and butter are all part and parcel of this great meal.

I'd love to see Gordon actually go there and try the food first hand! It wasnt even declared as cod, or anything special.....just "fish" lol.

I've seen Gordon shut a place down for serving food like that.. And the cost was ridiculous.. Even for New york

Hi Lee great video as usual we were over in New York at the beginning of December and Ramsey's opened the day after we went home so it looks like we got away with that one.we stayed about 50 yards further up than Ramsay's and when you were doing the review straight at back of you is Virgil's restaurant,now that place is worth visiting, absolutely beautiful,rack of ribs are out of this world you need to try that bud.all the best keep up the good work glad to see Martin is ok.from Steve in Cudworth

On last week's episode he brought two struggling brothers from a diner in Queens New York to his fish and chip location in Times Square that you reviewed to show them how efficient well-run restaurant that serves great food should be run.😅 I was laughing my butt off remembering your experience at Gordons Times Square Fish and Chip location. 😅

We passed that Gordon Ramsay place when we were there in December, but didn't think it was 'his' place (only noticed the name as we walked past the entrance booth). Glad we didn't go in now, especially at $25 for that portion. Clearly a massive tourist trap. Also, first time we went to New York in 2018 was february half term, and that was the coldest its been when we've been there, inclduing twice in December (2019 and 2022). Great video though. Even though I'm not long back ,love seeing the sights of the Big Apple. Looking forward to catching up with the other vids of your latest trip, and others to come. Oh by the way, the street steam is part of the city heating system, apparently Onwards my friend. EDIT: Just seen the extra end bit... Get 'Hooked'! Absolutley creased 🤣🤣

My work, such as it still is, is about 4 blocks from Times Square. I never, ever, go there, and just avoid it like the plague. Actually, I think they have a shop just for getting plague. Salt and Battery was no good last year, but you persist. If you want F&C in New York, go to a pub (English OR Irish). I suggest the Keg Room on W. 36th St. (it's a large place, and a bit pricey, with a great selection of beers, wines, and ciders)

Agree with everything you say on this review mate. That was nothing like fish and chips. Why do these “celebrity chefs” have to ruin food! Looked more like scampi bites to me! And they weren’t even chips, they were fries🤣. I wouldn’t pay 25p for that never mind $25. I’m not even gonna mark this as it was so bad🤣. Well done on highlighting this mate as if people are paying prices like that then they deserve a lot better than what was served up there. Great vlog mate and thanks as always for sharing👍. About nine and a half mins in, man can be seen "re-heating" something, which is bad enough, but if they handed to me, what they handed to you, After asking for fish and chips. I would have handed it back asked for a refund, and directions to the nearest fish and chip shop. HATS Off to you Lee for taking yet another for the team.

A guy named Haddon Salt, a fish and chips cook from Derbyshire England, emigrated to the US in 1964 with the intent of selling the same caliber of fish and chips they enjoyed back in England. He started H. Salt Fish and Chips in California and it was a huge success and he eventually opened up 500 restaurants all together. I would go there all the time when I was a kid and the fish was really good, and so was the vinegar they had there. He ended up selling his restaurants to KFC for a fortune and the quality of the food went down after that. Now there's only a few of them left and the food is completely different than it was. Lots of restaurants in the US sell fish and chips but most of it isn't very good. I wish we had the original H. Salt restaurants back here again.

There is a well-known battered fish chain in the US called Long John Silvers. It's not much to write home about either. There was also a fish&chip chain called Arthur Treacher's, named after an English actor, they were usually in shopping malls or airports but they're pretty much defunct now

Gordon probably hasn't even visited this place before... Someone will more than likely have handed over a huge pile of cash... Just for the privilege of using his name and his image as a marketing gimmick... It's all smoke and mirrors Lee... The day Gordon personally pumps out that garbage from this kitchen... It's all over for him mate... The "Fish" actually looked like the Iceland Frozen Fish Fillet Strips... And those manky looking Chips looked hard and overcooked... Also having no Mushy Peas or genuine Curry Sauce... Just shows you how pretentious this place is... Favouring Tartar Sauce a Lemon Wedge and a Sprig of Parsley instead... All this with a very clever box configuration that blocks off a third of the box for the condiments... Allowing them to serve fewer Chips to the paying customers... If Gordon was served that on an episode of Kitchen Nightmares... He would've spat it out into a napkin and mercilessly slated the food... Yet another below par tourist trap Fish & Chips business... Somehow I expected it not to be great. As soon as I saw the chips they looked like something from Mccain! If you go to a chippy you want proper Chips! Not pre packed rubbish! Nice to see he's put the Price tag on there too... If you're in Times Square, I liked Dallas BBQ which was above BB Kings Club, must have been good was full of New Yorkers. Also you have to try Junior's Cheesecake just off the main square... bloomin' lovely!

My cousin from US visited UK back in 1988. She had fish and chips, in newspaper. She said nothing like in US, meal in newspaper would go down as a great novelty in the US.

Here in the states, he has started to sell Frozen Foods at Walmart like Fish N Chips, and Shepard Pie.

Real "proper" British F&C would not sell in GR NYC as they are completely different to the rubbish Americans are used to being served in American "pubs". So from a business perspective GR is just selling the same rubbish as everyone else. And $25 is called lunch here (although there are much better options) You don't launch a new concept restaurant here without a lot being spent on customer focus groups etc. Being a USBrit for 35 years the lack a real F&C is just something you accept and look forward to when you are back in the UK.

OMG !They look just like TGI Friday Skin on Fries you can get from Iceland!! Looking at the one you held up, looked like they were the frozen variety! No mushy peas, sacrilege ! Its typical of all these chef owned places or "award winning" chippies - they are usually the most mediocre of places, living off the award or the name of the chef. I remember when I worked in Singapore, and Harry Ramsdens opened up - you know when it used to be good, and not owned by some venture capitalists who dont understand the brand - anyway, they had some blokes over from Leeds, food was just like being back in Gods Country - even did me some scraps as well. Soon as they went back 'om, gawd they went poor pretty quickly! Even tried serving my co-workers Bitter in frozen glasses as well!

Fish fingers and French fries is the standard for fish and chips in America. Overpriced is the standard for most things in America. You’re experiencing what we go through at 90% of places we try for the first time here in the USA. I’m frequently amazed at the garbage Americans eat - and enjoy!!!!! (The bulk of fast food places, coffee shops - the standard here is atrocious (Starbucks sell burnt grade B beans and they admit it publicly) and many restaurants). When we find a good place, we frequent them often, they are so few. Hopefully you will find some on this trip - they do exist and some are both surprising and excellent.

I'm originally from NW England and now a US citizen. I think you were a tad harsh, the fish at least didn't look that bad. Fact is most Americans do not like fish and chips the way they are in the UK. When I lived in the UK and hosted American family and friends they never really appreciated the fish and chips. Gordon Ramsey is aware of this I'm sure. Obviously buying anything in Manhattan is expensive and is nothing like where I live in central Pennsylvania. Here I can go to my local diner, buy two cooked breakfasts for less than $10. NYC is really the pits, I prefer living in so called flyover country.

Just reinforces that we're really lucky in Britain. We have really decent Fish and Chip shops everywhere in this country. It's one of the great things about this country that I ❤️ love.

The tall buildings in Manhattan are heated by steam. A utility supplies the steam to most of Manhattan through large pipes underground. Those pipes are hot, and any moisture touching those pipes will create steam. Steam can heat the upper floors of the skyscrapers easily.
