The shape of the fish gave it away....It looks like the "frozen portion" shaped cod from a supermarket freezer, you know the ones. It certainly does not look like the side fillet of a piece of cod. Elementary my dear Dr Watson......
Looked like a fish supper i had in a Blackpool amusements arcade once...made me sick for 3 days and i am not lying when i say i could have squirted through the eye of a needle! seeing yours actually brought back the memories and made me feel ill again. Hope you're enjoying yourself ;-)
$51.26.....as a Yorkshire man I fell off my chair at those prices.😳😳😳😳 and yes the fish was undercooked you could see how runny it was. Get back to Murgatroyds.👍🏻
As an American who's lived abroad and LOVES fish and chips i want y'all to know we all don't think this shit is good. Watching this i was like, "wtf" lol greasy and pale, bland looking batter. Flat too. Just saying, lol don't think all us Yanks are clueless to good food! Keep up the good work too! Love your channel. Much love from North Carolina 🤗
Guys, I'm an Expat from Bradford, and YES, Haddock is king. I live just outside Philadelphia and have visited a salt and battery many times, after seeing your visit and what you were served upset me. I contacted the owner over email, linked your review. He was shocked, told me the 2 people are new and left out ingredients in the batter. I told him you are still in New York, maybe he will reach out to give you a second review. It's a difficult time for all restaurants, service establishment s with COVID etc. Would be great to see if you get chance for another review. Cheers, Nick
I laughed at your mates face when he was trying to eat that disgusting looking Fish. Seriously 😐 Lee, I have NEVER EVER seen Fish looking so proper RANK. Five and a half dollars 💵 for Curry sauce, what’s that all about. The most you would pay in the UK 🇬🇧 is around a pound. You guys need some well deserved luck, at your next destination. Dave
Fish & chips aside, plastic forks & knives and polystyrene containers tell me all I need to know. Clueless. Forget A Salt and Battery; it's more like GBH!
Deary goodness! What a minging plate of (so called English) fish n chips 😬 Martin’s face when he saw the batter made me laugh! I’m bothered about what the Americans think that we would like that! The man from Bedford needs to come back home for a bit as I think he’s lost the plot lol. I’m going for a big fat zero!!! Another great vlog xx
Yes Lee, my favourite youtuber... look forward to you're uploads.. I love how you always read and like the comments.. but hope you don't stop once you have 100's of thousands subs lol (righting this at start of video BTW.. Will comment once watched too) x
Looked like the dreaded "Frozen FORMED fish pieces" from supermarkets, and even the batter looked like the fake batter stuff they're coated in. That was absolutely shocking.
Hi Mac. Any chance in the next video could you explain how tipping works in America? And do you HAVE to tip? That Chip Shop and bad diner did not look like they deserved a tip at all lol
Wtf that looked disgusting , no frozen fish in fish and chips and soggy batter disgusting When I went to New York they all raved on about biscuits and gravy (which is like a scone in some disgusting white sauce) absolutely horrible, We have the best grub in the UK , Good video 👍 stay safe
September 2019 we were in New York for our wedding anniversary. Went to Macy's for lunch. It was expensive as expected. Great service, nice surroundings and proper crockery and cutlery. Lovely waitress. With the tip, $65 for two meals. Fish, chips, peas, coffees. As good as you get here. About £25 each. Huge portions, if we had known we could have bought one between two. Incidentally, for best value in daytime head to the low level at Grand Central Station. There are numerous food outlets, freshly cooked and it's all good. Get there and order before noon whilst it's quiet because it soon gets chocker with office workers.
Hey Lee! Was watching channel “UA Eats” He does the food rating as well He went to “A Salt and Battery” the same place you went with the Silver Fox. His video was today UA rated the food pretty good But, we all know you’re the “expert for “Fish and Chips. So, I can’t go by UA Eats since you didn’t rate it well.
Ahaha making me laugh again.. adult n battery hahaha... omg.. life's banquet, don't starve ohh how ironic.. All serious tho that was NOT English fish n chips.. How can a English man cook that! Nooooo haha. Looking forward to next video guys. Better luck next time 😆
Really appreciate the videos, chaps, thanks for sure. Just that usually more than half the video is over before you have a bite. Funny and entertaining but too long. All the best.
Much better to get stuck into New York's diverse food offering, rather than weeing into the wind with stuff that's more than likely going to disappoint..?
Been here before as I said in the vlog. It used to be amazing. Been on many many different food programs. Don't know what happened post lockdown. Terrible. :(
It makes a difference how hungry you are. I noted you wanted to share before entering. The chips and peas looked nice. Its not only over there you get sloppy batter. Ive had it in uk. Had a Chinese takeaway recently and ordered a pineapple fritter . The batter slid off it !
Maybe I’m strange but when the food is not so great it makes for a better video!! Loving the warm barbs and the cheeky banter though lads. I’m a northerner myself, so to see the two of you guys hitting New York is a delight. Mc you’ve found your Laurel…or maybe you’re Hardy!!😂. Either way it makes for a great team and viewing.x
It's getting harder to find decent fish & chips in Britain. Let alone the United States. No that did not look appetising. Even Captain Birdseye frozen cod looks better what that did.
Hi there I am for West Midlands and I have haddock for my fish and chips some of my family don’t like either they have cod instead but I prefer haddock I don’t like mushy peas much but I like curry sauce but no gravy on mine I know some people love gravy on the fish and chips but I don’t👌
Prices are a joke, £3.70 for a battered mars bar, £4.45 for chips and £11 for a bit of cod. Best fish and chips from a chippy I had were in Whitby, though usually go for something regional like pudding in Lancs and Haggis in Scotland
Gosh the batter definitely failed" the crisp test" .Hopefully you will find some better dining options soon. I am looking forward to a special blog of Martin's Bloopers🤣🤣🤣
That batter looked dire, kind of reminded me of Young's frozen fish from Asda AND as for frying in canola oil, NOOOOO it has to be beef dripping everytime
That looked like a bigger and more expensive version of something you'd buy from Farmfoods or Iceland Presumably if you hadn't been doing a Vlog it'd gone straight back. Maybe the Whitby one wasn't that bad after all!😄
Absolutely grim when your fish dribbled onto your plate 😱 "I'm going to quickly eat this and mark it outside" was clearly code for 'this is piss poor' 😂
That's a bit of a shame mates. I thought the fish actually looked pretty good on the cut through. But yeah, if underdone, that's a no-no. Plus it was bloody expensive. I think we have better fish and chips here in Thailand.
What the hell, that price. You can clearly see it's not fresh, no quality ingredients. Another case of just wanting the highest profit possible and no passion for the trade
That's a real shame I went to Salt & Battery in 2012 and it blew my socks off it was so good, The guy was from Blackburn really knew his stuff . I wonder if the owners have changed used to be a lady from Hackney she owned the tea rooms and grocery store next door as well
I actually can imagine yorkshire having cod as a rule, ive just noticed alot of chippies in recent years dont get cod as much and haddock seems to be more available to most places so can see bith sides if lee had not long lived in yorkshire
Last I knew (April 2020) it was an English husband and wife that owned the shop, the same couple that own(ed)Tea and Sympathy. We were friends on FB and I know they had been using a Gofundme to try to raise money to keep on their employees during the height of COVID. Not sure about that batter…looks to thick. Chips are boaking! Highway robbery.
Hey andother great video by the MacMaster, It is a shame that a place you go to for years is a good place to go and has good memories for that person then to find out it has changed hands and the service and food had gone down hill that much that is that the food is that bad you are unable to eat it, But like I said before its good to review places as they change and also educates others to go or not. Like you get the owners to talk at good food places it be also good if you spoken to the plces that have gone down hill to see if you can tell them about their food and to see how to inprove things rather than just keep serving bad food and service, this would help business that arnt aware of their business being bad. I would like to thank both of you and please keep safe....
I wouldnt call it a tourist trap, more like a local trap. I think they realized locals dont know what its supposed to taste like and just went whatever and charge a premium.
Cod almighty!! That looked well undercooked and a soggy mess!! Always thought Yarrkshire is the Mecca for fish n chip aficionados and usually it’s Haddock n chips over there that’s the best!! Good to see the ups n downs of eating in the big apple and loving the funny outtakes at the end!! Keep it up guys!!
Imagine now yourself owning a chippy in New York that you have replcated from Whitby, Bournemouth, Yorkshire or anywhere else for the matter. The question is would you dare sell Faggots and Chips ?
Well back to Whitby for a fish and chips maybe not .looked disgusting and did i see right tizer $3.50 before tax having a laugh enjoyed the vlog have a good time .
I think it's called the Waterloo chippy honestly Lee if you ever get chance go there I've seen videos of you and your mum she looked like a lovely lady and all the best people come from Ashton-under-lyne 👍❤❤
Every time I hit NYC I head to A salt and battery. I very much enjoy it, though I always bring my own Tarter sauce as they serve some odd variant of it. I really enjoy the cod and the chips are excellent. I love the MacMaster and trust his reviews that said I will head back there next week when I am back in NYC
Rectangular fish? The only place you find those is in cardboard boxes in the frozen food aisle. And you're supposed to put them in the oven, not the deep fat fryer. Looked absolutely gross.
Chips looked decent. Curry Sauce looked good. Fish looked ok the batter bit soft but iwas expecting worse after reading the comments. But 50 dollars is a rip off. 25 dollars all in would suffice.
I remember being told as a kid the reason here in Bradford and Yorkshire we get haddock non of your cod worm-ridden rubbish in Yorkshire a bold statement I know but... cod back in ww2 was thought to be full of worms and parasites which did not sit well with us Yorkies so I'm guessing that has a lot to do with why Yorkies prefer Haddock your friend there is mistaken I'm afraid also m8 in Scotland the same applies its Haddock that is the main chip supper and is great up there too one of my fave chippys is over on Skye another in Nairn soooo lol HADDOCK IS BEST as every good Yorkshire lad knows great vid tho as always, Mac I remember your friend there saying he stayed in Bradford where I'm from so he must have forgotten its all Haddock here maybe he's forgotten due to Age lol or maybe too much cod has Addled his memory either way hope you take this in a light-hearted manner in which I typed it stay safe guys that noo yorks a rough place I hear lol
What a rip off. Approx. £40-00. My local chip shop in the UK serves a giant portion of fish and chips for £5-50. There tag line is "The home of the jumbo cod" and it is big and very tasty. The shape of the fish did look like packet frozen fish from the supermarket and the curry sauce looked too brown. Mind you the "Rate my Takeaway" guy would have said those fish and chips were fantastic, 10 out of 10, as he says that about the food in every place he visits. It is so nice to see genuine food reviews on this channel. I do watch both each day. R.M.T. for the comedy value and The Macmaster for genuine food reviews.
Hi. We went to Withernsea for a week 7 years ago. Asked for Cod and chips. Told they don't do Cod. I think we had Haddock. Went to Scarborough a couple of days later, and had Cod and chips in a restaurant 🙂
The fish looked previously frozen, hence the high water content, combine that with a fryer at too low a temperature and that is what you end up with. It is a shame really because both problems are easily sorted. Also how can they justify $5.50+Tax for a little tub of curry sauce?
Badly Drawn Boy (UK recording artist) did a small tour of UK and every evening meal was takeaway fish and chips. They asked him (on morning TV prog) where was best. He recommended The Magnet, in Bristol, SW UK.
What no halibut-I'm from Van Isle. Place sure looks old school-some English beer. Halibut is more fatty rich than haddock. By appearance the batter looks good and is staying on the fish. They let themselves go. You should have let us know about those beers. Watkins, Lancaster and Newcastle-that's about all I know. I used to grow Golden Hops.
Before I watch this one, I have an issue with the name of the shop. I think I see where they were coming from but its a negative name, a violent crime, which then makes me think a bad assault on my taste buds. Just my mind thinking lol
Lee, you're gaining 100 subs a day!. USA Series is/was an inspired decision. I can see you returning early 2022,.... hope so! God Bless and keep up the great work.
Wow that didn't look great at all! Fish looked terrible especially when it was dripping! Peas and curry didn't look bad tho. Bet ya can't wait for proper fish and chips when your back home lol
