Avoid overpacking with this simple method! | Minimalist travel capsule 

For me, it is never the clothes that are the issue with packing; its more the toiletries: shampoo, conditioner, double cleansers, combs, sunscreens etc... would love to see good tips for that :-)

When I get back from a trip, I take out everything I actually used while away and make a list of with notes about what type of trip and how long it was for. I can then use the list as a packing guide for future trips. I keep the lists in the suitcase so I can always find when needed 😊

I've been guilty of both under packing and over packing. It's so hard to get it right. When I overpack, travel day is a pain. When I underpack, I usually end up being cold... or dirty! I have refined my packing quite a bit, and it turns out my packing closely resembles this, and I didn't even know this was a thing! Love it. Thanks for the tips!

I like the 5-4-3-2-1 idea. I also pick 3 colors, usually blue, white and denim.

I’m a dress person. For a hot summer trip, I prefer taking five lightweight, cotton or rayon knit dresses for daytime. I take two or three solid-color, simple, silk dresses for evening with a metallic bag and shoes that works with all of them. They’re super-lightweight, take up little room, dry fast and can just be dampened to dewrinkle them. With something like a lightweight cotton knit jacket, sneakers and sandals for day and one swimsuit, I’m covered. Plus a daytime handbag and a small collection of accessories like jewelry and scarves, no need to skimp on those. I like to buy a locally-made straw sunhat on the first day, rather than trying to pack one.

I’ve been backpacking since my early 20s & I still swear by this packing/planning technique! I usually do similar composition for the clothes I bring & adjust based on the season/activities I will be doing. For longer trips (>2 weeks), I would bring clothes enough for 7 days because I can almost always find a laundry place or wash them myself!

Just packed for a 12day trip to Copenhagen with this in mind. I did 7 tops (from tank tops to one heavier sweater), 3 dresses, 3 pairs of shoes, 2 bottoms. Still ended up with 15 items all together and I am so proud of myself. I don't think I have ever packed this lightly 😊. Thank you!

I would have loved to see you pack all that. I can’t see how the 15 essentials, plus all the extras, and toiletries, could fit into one carry on. I barely have room to pack one extra pair of shoes and I think you had 3! But I’d love to be proven wrong!

I also like 5-4-3-2-1 method, but in my case it is 5 tops (2 tees, 1 jacket, 1 shirt, 1 tank top), 4 bottoms (1 pants, 1 shorts, 1 skirt and 1 dress), 3 shoes (sneakers, flip -flops, sandals), 2 bikinies (interchangeable tops and bottoms), 1 shopper bag. I may add one clutch and one belt, too.

great tip! I lived on a similar amount of clothes for 6 months across both winter & summer in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. One pair of blue jeans was more than enough for me.

I tried this, and it is SO SMART. It also help me list items that I didn't already have in my wardrobe, but I would need it for the trip.

Like you, I use an IKEA clothes rail to work out the clothes I will take on a trip - regardless of whether its a short local holiday or one overseas. I usually start pulling out clothes from my wardrobe a couple of weeks before the holiday so there’s time to change, or reduce, my packing. I also take photos of outfits to reference while I’m on holiday and make a final packing list. I then reuse that list (with relevant tweaks) on my subsequent holidays as items like technology and toiletries don’t change much. PS love your travel capsule! 🤗🇦🇺

I always used 4-3-2 to pack. That is 4 tops, 3 bottoms and 2 outer pieces (cardigan, jacket or blazer). I think that 5-4-3-2-1 is even better. I always bring 3 pairs of shoes. On my last trip, I found that 3 pairs of pants were too little for a 40 day trip! So it will be easy to adapt. Thanks for the tips. Chris

This is a very nicely done video. Jeans are not suitable for travel. Heavy. Hot in summer, cold in winter and take forever to dry if they get wet.

"Minimalist" Brings her entire wardrobe 😂

When we're getting ready for our yearly trips, I bring up the garment rack a couple weeks before we go & start pulling & deciding 'what to take', then the BIG suitcase & garment bag comes out, along with our carry-on & personal bags... This year we're going to Boston & Cape Cod for a week, once again I pulled out the garment rack, but this time within 20 minutes, using the '5 4 3 2 1, I was done. I found a practically new carry-on suitcase at a consignment shop & the items not mentioned, (toiletries, undergarments, cosmetic case & medications), EVERYTHING will fit in that carry-on, so Hubby can have the BIG suitcase & we can leave the garment bag at home :) My 'personal bag' will be my Coach town tote, I can put my laptop & our 'important papers' in that, then a smaller bag in the carry-on for when we get there. We always print out our flight & lodging papers, that way if there's a sketchy internet/wifi connection, we still have that paper as a backup & there have been times that it's come in handy to have it on paper, not just on the phone. We use a pencil case that has 2 compartments, one for the papers & the front for our passports for when we go on cruises. We wait with the 'non-essential' liquids, (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, sunscreens) until we get where we're going, then we find a Walgreens or Walmart & get the big bottles there. With both of us using them, within a week they're close to if not empty anyway so we can just toss them when we pack to go back home. :)

The main thing is to pack very good quality clothes that will last the distance. Also wash and dry them inside out. They simply wear better, and also wear good quality shoes and handbag. This will help you not look too much of a tourist and more of a local. Avoid synthetics where possible, they stink up in no time!

I have a 5-week trip in Sept and Oct including a 10-day cruise to St Laurence River in Canada. I go by car, plane, ship, bus, and railroad. And I also take 3 senior in their 80’s. I have to pack light and stealth.

You can also do a mix-n-match method. 1 bottom + 1 top = one outfit. 1 bottom + 2 tops = two outfits. 2 bottoms + 2 tops = 4 outfits Etc

I once traveled for 3 weeks with just 10 items of clothes, 2 pairs of shoes, and 1 purse. I had just the right amount: 2 pants, 2 skirts, 1 dress, 4 tops, 1 jacket, sandals, sneakers, 1 earrings, 1 neckless. Color scheme was black & white.

Great advice for your daily wear clothes, but I have to pack more workout clothes and pajamas. I like to change my pjs every 3 days. I sweat a lot when I work out. Hand washing one set of workout gear doesn’t guarantee they will be dry the following day.

I really like this but I'd like to see you show how to fit all that in a carry-on...

Great tips!!! I also travel with very few items. I take 1 pair of confort shoes ( spanish espadriles)that match with all my outfits and my slippers. Spanish espadriles are good shoes for walking and look great with skirts, trousers and dresses ) day and night. Only 1 purse that matches ALL.

Shoes are my biggest challenge.

How heavy is all your stuff? How do you bring skin care, makeup, cords, laptop, etc.? to fit in a carry-on?

This seems like enough clothes to live indefinitely, if you're minimalist. Let alone for a holiday. How will all this fit in a standard suitcase, though? Seems very bulky. I'd be interested to know how you pack these items.

How would this work going on a cruise? You need clothes for day, then another type for evening. Plus you’re usually seeing the same people every day-especially when you go to dinner with the same people every night. We go for 14+ day cruises, so it’s hard to decide the combination, and still pack light.

If you take five tops do you do a wash when you’re there if away for ten days? Four bottoms sounds enough for ten days without washing but five tops isn’t!

The secret to not overpack is to get rid of the “just in case” mentality. Plan all your outfits by outings and stick to it. Unless you’re going to a deserted island, there are places anywhere in the world where you could buy things, if needed. The same with packing things like shampoo/conditioner/soap and toiletries in general. Buy travel sizes if you think you won’t be able to find your favorite brand at destination. If you think you could, buy there! I can’t tell you how many people I’ve seen getting confiscated WHOLE bottles of shampoo or (insert any product here) from their carry-on, or have bottles explode inside their luggage cause they need to bring everything and more for a week vacation…WTH

This is a lot for 10 days .

Omg- pack NOTHING! 😅 Buy all the cool clothes at your destination( if time allows) we traveled 3 week around Europe this summer with just backpacks and regretted it - could have bought high quality wardrobe for very reasonable price. Also every country has it’s own “fashion” so it’s kinds cool to fit in with locally purchased clothing
