AVOID these men in Kathmandu! 🇳🇵 REAL LIFE JUNK MAIL

Throughout the few weeks I've been in Kathmandu, I have constantly been approached by people either trying to sell things, or trying to take me places that I don't want to go. I have no issue with salesmen, that's a good marketing tactic, but lying to people saying you're a student, but in fact you're trying to drag tourists to somewhere to get commission, is just totally dishonest.
These guys don't even remember who they are telling the lies to. Not only did the guy in the yellow jacket forget me, the next guy did too! In Tanya's video, he was trying the same tactic on me, but also, he'd even tried it the day before. They completely forget who they try to scam.
Just avoid these guys if they approach you with the script I reeled off at the start. "Go away, I've seen videos of you doing this, leave me alone."
Just a bit of advice, you need to get a bit aggressive off camera or they do not leave you alone. I had to threaten one of them because he wouldn't leave us alone and just kept following us. I didn't have my camera with me.
First guy, the Indian guy. He was a liar. He literally asked me to give him money for his family, then asked me to buy him food when I said no. He is dishonest, and very persistent. "Scam: a dishonest scheme; a fraud." What this guy is doing is clearly dishonest, he is lying to try to make money, rather than giving the real reason that he's being friendly. This is a scam. He even used the same opening line on me the first time "do you have small roads like this in your country?"
Second guy, seems pretty friendly, but he approached me three times within three days and had no idea he'd done it before. This guy at least tried to explain that he wanted to take me somewhere to show me something.
The young guy I'd never seen before, but he was confused as to why he hadn't seen me in 3 weeks, surely he would have seen me to try to pull this sales tactic out? See how he was confused? Maybe not a scammer, but definitely a liar with a poor sales tactic. This one has gone out of his way to try to get the video removed, but is insistent that he did nothing wrong. Well, if he did nothing wrong, then the video shouldn't be an issue... Yep, exactly. Not only this, he even messaged Kurt Caz to ask him to ask me to remove the video, delete his part, but leave the others in, then re-upload. 😆
The spa guy wasn't a scammer or anything, he was just a salesman, he showed me pretty quickly what his service was but I'm already aware that spas in Kathmandu are sometimes fronts for human trafficking. Sometimes, maybe not this guy, but still beware.
The drunk or drugged guy "REMEMBER ME?", he's a tour guide, not scam in sight but he slurs his words and literally has stains on his jacket from whatever drug he's consuming.
Drug salesman at the end. The guy who asked if I wanted some fun? He meant did I need him to find me a prostitute, definitely related to trafficking. He quickly changed his question to something about trekking.
It's very annoying trying to enjoy this part of the city when idiots like these are constantly harassing you. Just tell them straight away to go away, don't let them waste your time.

It will always amaze me how many people try to justify the actions of scammers. "They gotta eat!" or "They're just trying to make money" - get some morals. You'd have a different view if it was your grandma who got scammed.

@@M88ULV We are very sorry for inconvenience they caused you and many other tourists. A simple tip is to go inside a shop owned by locals not brands and ask them if there is festival and ask them to tell those people to go away. It's sad thing that happens but they are trying to make a living from that though but they try very hard which is very inconvenient for tourist. If you find them again say "Malai painting kinnu chhaina tesaile tapai janu hos", which means I don't want to buy painting so please go. If they still keep coming then tell them that you will call police. They will go away quickly.

Emilicia ma'am we are very sorry that you have to feel and witness these thing ☹ Our humble apologies. Tell them to leave straight and boldly and if they won't go then go into shop and ask them to tell them to go away or tell them that you will call police. Telling them that you don't want to buy things from them no matter what they say will demotivate them and leave you if no further interest is shown or interacted with them. Being a Nepali this deeply sadden me that you and Mulvey have to witness this. ☹

I noticed many beggars and robbers come from India because of the open border, in 2008 during my college time we used to hangout in thamel a lot. It used to be a less crowded and peaceful area. Most of the businesses used to be run by the locals. Now I can see many shops are owned by Indians and Chinese citizens. Also many Indians residing in Thamel, some of them are very good hard working but most of them enter with horrible intentions.

im in Kathmandu now and have had these exact conversations like 20 times with people. Turns out, most of them are from India as the first guy in the video stated. My hostel owner said its common for indians to move to KTM and they have a nice little scam where they take you to see their "family" and they show you how poor they are then ask for a donation or to buy a shoebox so they can find a job as a shoe shiner. Turns out the shoebox salesman actually just takes half the cash and they repeat the process... Normal Nepali people don't approach you like this - at least not in my experience. 10/10 times someone has been trying to scam me, guide me or sell me something. But other Nepali people who are minding their own business tend to be very shy and and polite. So fair warning to tourists in KTM be very cautious of every single person who approaches you to strike up a conversation...

I've been to Morocco many times, and in a lot of places there you get hassled all the time as a foreigner, so I know how to deal with it, but it's good to know that Kathmandu's not as hassle free as many RU-vidrs make it out to be. 😁 P.S. sorry about the ginger tea, you must be gutted. 😆

That was a brilliant video really enjoyed watching it so funny to see those guys, Amsterdam was a bit like that in the 80s with drug dealers trying to sell you drugs they all have the same stories and they followed you for ages they wouldn’t take no for an answer so in the end I just kept repeating I want to buy a hat I want to buy a hat and they didn’t know what to make of me and they left me alone

Why oh why...even engage in conversation with the scammers. I-G-N-O-R-E them. It is not being rude...ignoring those who wish to scam you. Ignore them. Ignore them. Ignore them...no matter what they say. Pretend you do not hear them. It is called..."The Silent Treatment".

Nepalese in general are very friendly and do not scam anyone!! Most of the people begging on the streets of ktm don’t even understand the Nepalese language. They come from bordering country- sad but it the fact. And it’s a desperate time since Covid .. there are hardly any tourists and people have no business. If you were planning not to go on a trekking trip, you could have gone to Pokhara and worked - you could have escaped the hustle bustle of ktm and be near to nature.

"There's no need to be driving on these roads." Hit the issue right on the nail, mate. These roads you're walking on have been inhabited for a couple millenniums now. And now people wonder why there isn't enough space for vehicles. It's not made for vehicles! How hard is that to understand? Hopefully, we get someone with a spine in charge of the government to ban vehicles on these ancient roads. Also, just tell them you're not interested mate. That's what we do when travelling to India. That happens a lot to us too. The more you engage, the more they engage.
@M88ULV
@M88ULV 2 года назад
Spot on mate, it also feels like there's an attitude of 'I don't care who I inconvenience' from the people driving there. They can literally just use the main road, but they choose to save like 1 minute by driving through crowds of pedestrians. Glad I'm not the only person who thought it was wrong! All the best mate.

2nd guys name is Bicky. He's affiliated with some thanka painting businesses amd schools. He has injuries from the earthquake for which he needs money to get medical help but the bills for healthcare in Nepal are so high that it's unlikely he'll ever get enough from tourists to pay for it. Unfortunately it's these guys with limited english who annoy tourists and give a bad impression of poor people when there are so many deserving Nepali people. Remember the tourist areas of Nepal have the most cash and most facilities for locals, there is a lot of food around and strong community so they get by without the tourist dollar. Even though these street guys are indeed poor they are young and healthy. Visit a public hospital in Nepal and upgrade someone to a better hospital for the same amount as 2 or 3 of those guys would take you for and spend on alcohol. Even if you buy rice and veggies for someone they'll often trade it for whatever. Just have to be firm in your stance knowing that most people in the tourist areas have enough to eat. Should make it easier to decide who to give your money to. The people who collect plastic are generally some of the most grateful and beautiful as a small amount can really enhance their day and when you see them again they will not harrass you. Each to their own but that's a bit of what I've learned in Nepal. Excellent videos Mulvey. Craic from Pokhara :)

I sub to Carl Rock and he went through with going along with the scam just to show folks exactly how it worked, those guys are pushy and even use guilt like their families are hungry, its a awful scam and it takes a cold person to do that to innocent tourists, it makes people weary of even going to India because of that behavior. I think you had one going to ask you out.
