I have the same side panniers, you can actually adjust them so they only open the top third like a top loading case. There are locking clips inside that you can adjust, that black horizontal line at about the top third is actually a hinge point. Try it out, it's a pretty good design when used like that.

Thanks for the video. I took your advice on some of the points you made. I originally purchased the top box but returned it because it's just too big. I went with the triumph outback cases instead of the trekker because they top open instead of side open. I didn't purchase the top engine guard, just the lower one. The outback cases are so much nicer than the plastic trekker ones, plus the tops opening is a huge plus. I'm not going to do a top box. If I need extra storage I can just strap on a dry bag to the back or the tops of the outback cases.

For my BMW gs, I got my Outback panniers rack and boxes from GIVI and the engine guards as well, and they are great - much cheaper than BMW or Triumph. I am about to purchase the Triumph 900 and will just purchase the rack from GIVI and my boxes will work perfectly. Like you did, I put the OEM BMW skid plate on as it is fine and strong, but I put barkbusters on rather than the BMW handguards. Aftermarket accessories are much cheaper, and more flexible in terms of changing or adding parts, and better quality.

top opening interferes with a normal givi or shad top box. i have no problem with side but yes it will come out easier. there is only one side hard box taht opens from the front and rear. . Opening from the rear is blocked by a 48L top box; or bigger.

All good points. The OEM upper crash bars are definitely to be avoided. Damage to the tank as well as the beak area. For bars, I'd recommend you look into PUIG, from Spain. I think they are good because they do not attach to the front upper engine/ cylinder location. Many cases of broken bolts there, and they are extremely difficult to remove. Agree that Givi is a great line of luggage accessories. I use their hard cases, soft bags on their racks with the rapid release option. I actually like the lids on the cases you have, and I think the side opening is good, as I usually take the cases off to unload. Cheers.

Good video, totally agree with you about the aftermarket accessories and have just had my fingers burned with the new Triumph Top box that was included on my new bike....the lovely, 2 helmet Givi box that I thought was identical, now doesn't fit! Very annoying as the new one is half the size (but it all works on the same key so I'll probably end up keeping it) and I wanted to be able to swap them around. The top loading panniers are so much better than clamshell, even with the little hinge door. I wouldn't want to be dropping the weight of the bike on them, hasn't it damaged them? Thanks for the vid and safe travels. Cheeers Rick

I bought an old 1989 Goldwing that had side opening cases like yours and it decided to open while we were riding and we lost everything we had in it. Of course when we noticed we turned around and tried to find our stuff but not knowing when it happening made it hard, and we never found any of it. So if you buy an older bike and it comes with side opening cases make sure you check that they are still working as they should. Of course, having had that experience turned me off side opening cases for life :)

I have a similar story with a top case. I had a small bike with a top case and I hit a pothole in a roundabout. As a result the top case ejected and all my belongings ended up spread out on the tarmac. Good thing I wasn't riding alone and we did manage to save everything bar the top case. Anyhow, side cases and bad quality equipment are no nos ✌️

On my triumph 900 rally pro I bought Outback tek engine guards and bash plate then the T-Rex racing luggage rack as it is stronger. Outback advises against not using a top case and just 8kg, 16 lbs and not use as backrest. The panniers racks are set up to use Mosko Moto soft side bags. Hard side luggage as more secure theft wise but if you drop the bike there is a very real possibility of catching you lower leg under the edge of the case with broken bones. Haven't found a top case yet. On any brand of motorcycles I wouldn't purchase accessories from the dealer unless an aftermarket idem.

Really appreciate your honest admission of what you think weren’t good purchase decisions. Unless the dealer is offering some package deal that’s too good to pass up, then I recommend people put off buying luggage until you’ve spent some time with the bike and had time to research options. I think it’s particularly egregious that Triumph had Givi change the mounting for their branded luggage so that it’s not interchangeable. As for the upper/tank protection, your dealer did you wrong. Looks like they sold you the v1 model instead of the v2. The v2 has a third mounting point and are much more rigid. They’ve been out for quite some time so there’s no reason that they should have sold you the inferior v1 except to clear their inventory. With all you bought from them, I’d go back and complain that they knowingly sold you and inferior product when they had to know that an improved version was available (at the same price!).
@kondormotorides
@kondormotorides 7 месяцев назад
Maybe I wasn't clear enough but my main gripe with the Triumph engine guards is that I think having top and bottom is a ploy to sell us two items instead of just one. There's no reason why one better designed bar item shouln't be enough and the aftermarket options are proof of this ✌️

Triumph does allow to get black luagge if you select the ones which opens up instead of sideways. However, the brackets would still be silver :( I wonder if there's some other way to make locks for the lugagge. Because when you buy side cases they always come with a third lock to put in your topbox, so the locks are easily changed. One would just need to make it based on Triumph key :/

top opening saddlebags are always better. If you have side opening ones and you are packing a lot in them, you should get liner bags you can pack and just put the whole bag inside instead of individual items. Also, you can probably make some small mods to move that top case back a little bit and give your wife more space.
@kondormotorides
@kondormotorides Год назад
Yeah I use the liner bags but sometimes you just need to do a quick run to the grocery store and that's where the issue with side opening bags is more evident. Tried moving the top case to the back but she just won't settle for less space than what she had before! ✌️
@PovilasPanavas
@PovilasPanavas 6 месяцев назад
I only recently realised that not all hard side cases have carry on handles. And I thought to myself how people bring them to a hotel?.. One of the answers were they take inner bags. But that made me really confused. Why would anyone buy hard cases, but pack stuff into a soft bag. And after that would try to fit that somehow into into a hardcase. A lot of space would be wasted, because no way to pack properly into a soft bag. (and if one wants soft bag, they lighter and usually cheaper anyway, and works with almost any bracket with adapter)
@AyaWetts
@AyaWetts 6 месяцев назад
@@PovilasPanavas Why would you put handles on non-removable saddlebags. They are hard because you want them half way decently locked while leaving everything on the bike. If I am just going to take them off and carry them, then I want the lightest weight possible, which probably isn't hard bags.
@PovilasPanavas
@PovilasPanavas 6 месяцев назад
@@AyaWetts i understand keeping it locked on the bike. But I don't want to keep any items outside. Too dangerous. I don't know about these particular bags he has, but general when you have those hard cases not out of plastic, you can very easily remove them from the rack. You unlock them, and after that there's an easy way to remove them and bring to hotel. I guess weight might be an issue for some people. For me it isn't to carry it for 100-200m until the lift of a hotel.

Good video and some food for thought, although on doing a little research after watching, I think I will still go with the (top load) triumph panniers when I by my bike (1200 Rally, which will share the garage with my T120)… I am in the US and over here, at the time of writing, it is true that the black panniers are listed at 1160 usd on the triumph site but I also found the exact same part number for 740 usd on a “genuine triumph parts” site. That’s actually cheaper than the comparable Givi Alaska here in the US (36l and triumphs is 37l) and I think the triumphs look cleaner… less rivets on the outward facing side of the panniers. So even though made by Givi, they are likely designed in cooperation with Triumph and not just the Triumph logo slapped on the side of an Alaska pannier, and would not be more expensive to replace, if not purchased through the dealer (right now Triumph is even offering a pannier set included with purchase of a new 1200, so even if that offer is gone when I buy, I will talk them down to the $740 I can buy them at elsewhere. As I mentioned in another comment, I will not be getting a top case. I do not like the way they look at all (on any ADV bike).

GT pro is not ment to take offroad on rocks , get the Rally or Rally pro instead. You are right about the standard crash bars. I used Hepko & Becker upper and lower crash bars on my rally pro. After 5 medium crashes offroad even these where bend, but no dammage to the bike so far. If going offroad you are better of with soft paniers..;no dents and it's a lot more safe . I thought, initially, oh no not another disgruntled more money than sense fool. I've fallen many times into the same trap called marketing. When you buy into a brand you reinforce your own view of why you chose to buy a particular product by supporting that brand. (hope that makes sense) Also, there is a feeling of loyalty to that company that deters comparison with other similar products. Lots of product reviews are sponsored and this one, refreshingly, is not. Well done and lots of respect for your honesty. Your review could save buyers from making costly mistakes. Keep your reviews coming please.

I was so mad to find out about the Givi incompatibility. I have the same setup as you and saw the Givi Canyon soft bags and instantly wanted them. Spent a lot of money buying them only to find out they didn’t work.

@@kondormotorides its part of the learning curve of a new bike I suppose. I have told everyone I know about it before buying a new Tiger. Good video. Keep up the good work.

You need to watch ARieman1 and learn about loading "adv" bikes. He goes into honest detail about how the hard luggage systems are purely disastrous. There is a science to this sport, and you need to approach motorcycling with physics in mind. You make reference to "doodle", she is completely the most ill informed person in the adv world, hands down.....come on guys and girls.....take a step back and pull out the science, instead of all the nonsense.

Why didn’t you look at non factory options before ticking the boxes? As for givi not fitting, did you use givi mono lock or mono key? They have different systems, and yours in givi badge are mono lock.

Dealers want allways to sale all the stuff. They re promoting the one key System as a must have. And if you sit in the nice show room, you are prone to believe all the Blabla 😵‍💫
