Although BMW and many German brands are expensive and can be expensive to maintain, I feel that generally people don't buy them for reliability reasons but instead for fun/performance reasons. Of course a prius is going to be more reliable but I would not buy a prius if I was trying to have fun going on drives and canyon runs. I wouldn't call them bad cars at all you just have to know what you are getting into before buying one.

@@midiman5045 Compare Acura, Infinity, Genesis, etc, and you will see that they are very much in the same league as Lexus. Lexus is a Toyota and that's the only reason for its resale value. And just like any car, if you don't maintain it, then it will be a money pit. If you have a BMW or MBZ and it's a money pit, then you're not taking care of it correctly. When properly maintained, those cars will last a very long time. Do they cost a little more to do it? Yes, but that's the idea behind luxury cars, they cost more and the build quality is better. I go to Newport Beach 6-7 times a year, and I don't see many Lexus' at all, or BMW's for that matter. People are commuting in Mercedes and Bentleys. Lexus is for the inland-folk.

I am surprised that Scotty doesn't mention the innately shoddy electrics on Audis. After around 5 years of average use they develop intermittent faults and open circuits, often needing major attention to what used to be called 'looms'. As cars became so dependent upon on board computers (usually located in stupid places), manufacturers should have beefed up hard wiring but few bothered. Given that Audi started from a low point in this regard I am amazed that anyone buys them.

The plastic engine cover does two things actually. Reduces noise that gets into the cabin and keep the extreme heat from affecting the hood paint.
@anthonyholleran9378
@anthonyholleran9378 4 месяца назад
@@aussie2uGA I definitely agree, depending on the application. If one has a race car, say with forced induction, i.e., a nasty Street Car / Weekend Warrior car, then no cover; because, it's highly crucial to get the heat away from that engine and prevent heat soak. Regarding the paint on the race car, if we use DynaMat and some gold foil on the underside of the hood, that would cut down on the heat being able to hurt the paint from underneath and still allow the engine to shed it's heat in an effective way that would boost performance. Now, if we have a daily that we want not to be too noisy and we want to prevent the hood paint from bubbling, then yes, a cover would be good here.

Big disagree here. BMWs might be worse in the US/Canada, or basically outside Europe, but those manufactured and sold here in the EU are pretty damn solid. There's a reason BMWs are probably one of the most popular car brands around here. They have reasonably well made interiors, strong tank-like engines, especially the diesel engines (i.e. M47/M57/N57), which are probably one of the best the engines the automotive industry has ever produced, parts are cheap, labor is cheap. I'm in the EU (Romania), and around here, about 30% of all vehicles on the road are BMWs, which basically, makes it the most popular brand. People buy them because they are incredibly reliable and affordable, all things considered. It's neck and neck with Dacia. You usually see them going strong even at 500k kilometers. And mind you, the same mileage in Europe is more strenuous than the one in Europe, just because of geography and the road layouts.

The problem with cheap used BMWs or Mercedes, especially from private sellers, is that they are generally suffering from poor maintenance practices. So they are just looking to offload a problem. But a well-maintained BMW will last a good while. If you're looking for a used luxury car, it's best to go to a dealer because many of them are just well-maintained lease returns or trade-ins from loyal customers who are just upgrading every couple years. You will get the benefit of not having to deal with the depreciation loss while getting a solid car.
